My dad would choose Genesis, and I respect that choice, and the choice of everyone who picks Genesis. But I prefer Megadave.

I am not a Megadeth riff expert but to me their riffs sound dull compared to Iced Earth or most European metal bands.
Still, it could be that Mustaine's voice has obscured the riffs for me somewhat. I wonder how I would like an instrumental album of theirs.

Even if you don't like his vocals (I certainly don't; never have), how can you pick this over some generic power metal cheese?

I don't like Mustaine's vocals either. But Megadeth's rhythmic flow and the melody factor in their riffs are fantastic.

I try to avoid generic power metal. :D
Cried, that would take a long time. Don't forget there's much more metal coming from Europe besides power metal.

To be honest Foro, I haven't really listened to enough Genesis to make a very fair judgement in this particular match-up; and, furthermore, I've listened to very little post-90's Megadeth...

But just on Megadeth, their earlier work is excellent; the definition (to me) of Thrash Metal. I've always thought their guitar work was pretty special, with Mustaine & (now) Broderick a pretty incredible combination. Broderick is a stupidly good guitarist. That doesn't necessarily mean they've written anything decent mind you.

Rust in Peace =

Besides, is not just the guitar work. Those Hangar 18 drums are amazing.

Rust in Peace is simply a fantastic album; for me it's right up there with any other Heavy Metal album. That's just a person a view though. I can appreciate they ain't everyone's cup of tea.

I wonder how many metal albums have you heard Cried? I have rarely heard you talking about other metal bands so I honestly can't guess this.

Iron Savior! Love the guitar playing in that band. And in e.g. Running Wild and Sabaton as well. And this of course:
Perhaps not the most technical riffing, still the Germans brought lots of love for melody in guitar playing. Danke schön! :)

Genuine question; but who was writing metal riffs like Dave Mustaine before Megadeth came along?
Mustaine's riffs are probably original and influential. Same with Slayer riffs. So many metal bands have riffs that sound (somewhat) like Slayer.
What matters to me is the total package.

I miss something in Megadeth's music. As opposed to what Flash says I do not hear the melody factor in Megadeth riffs (at least not in that song that was posted). To me that song sounded like part 1, part 2 (the best part: the middle) and again part 1.
Music without melody in the riffs does not have to bad, but for the balance I'd like something else good. With Megadeth, the music around/behind the riffs (e.g. the rhythm section) do not sound that adventurous to me.

I like this kind of riff based music:
But also:

And Amorphis's riffs convinced me that I needed to get used to grunts:

Doom metal is not known for fast riffs but still, in my ears, the guitar playing can really be incredibly moving.

Napalm Death, Bolt Thrower and Gorefest are other examples of bands with riffs that I find interesting.

Last but not least: the Judas Priest Painkiller album! Also I am much more impressed by Black Sabbath and (of course!) Maiden riffs.

Megadeth's discography is inconsistent, but at their peak they were unstoppable and Rust in Peace alone could win this contest.

Fuck all, compared to how much literally everyone else, here, seems to listen to; hence why you shouldn't pay much attention to my judgement in these matters! :D

You should know Foro that since last August I haven't listened to one single album from start to finish that wasn't Buckethead, besides SiT. My listening at present is tragically narrow. It's just how I consume things. I don't do broad.

Forgot to mention Necrophagist (German band):

And At the Gates is another band with merciless riffing, with lots of melody:
