Unpopular opinion: I like the 98 debut Eddie more than the original. Not because it is particularly great, but because I never liked the original design.

To be honest, I'm also not that crazy about debut cover, but those red eyes on re-issues turned Eddie from a world-wide recognizible mascot into the side villain of C-grade horror movie).

The colours of the '98 version bug me more than Eddie, the beige/brown is quite ugly.
