what do you think of the upcoming anniversary TNOTB cassette release?

Is that the 2014/2015 remaster you just got?
yes, exactly. I recently ordered all Maiden vinyls from their "original" vinyl era ( = all albums 1980 thru 1990) and got some of them them shipped yet. three still missing: Killers, SSOASS and IM. distrubuter says they are out of stock and will be produced until summer. so I wonder what I will get. 2015 remastered edition those ones???

Where did you order from? I generally use Discogs nowadays to round out my collection. Also, all of the vinyl remasters sound phenomenal and have excellent packaging.

I ordered it here:

not the #1 adress you would suppose to get Heavy Metal vinyls :D
it's actually a bookstore in my town, run by to elder women. I got all my Maiden stuff nowadays there.
and yeah, you're right on the packaging, all great and solid stuff. I had all the vinyls in the 1980s in their original edition when I was a kid, but they're no more. so I have a direct comparison. I also purchased the later releases such as Nights Of The Dead and also Senjutsu which both are triple vinyls, and they also look awesome. I have no idea how they all sound cause I do not have a record player. I just keep all those vinyls.

The cassette is not the only release celebrating the 40th anniversary of the release of TNOTB.

Do you want to know what they have in the can?

Are you sure?

The same fucking beer with a different label!!!!!

Does anyone have a theory as to why Iron Maiden aren't exploiting their back catalogue with re-releases, boxsets, live shows from the archives, outtakes etc like we are seeing with so many artists?

a few ideas:

1) they don't have a hell of a lot of archive material, or they are fussy about the quality of it. I can see them putting camcorder shit on a dvd as a bonus but not as the main course.
2) they've re-released a lot already, in the last 10 years all 80's singles were released for the 3rd time, and the albums on vinyl for the second and third times, and on CD for the 5th time
3) they release a lot of straight forward albums, compilations and live albums, final frontier, from fear to eternity, en vivo, maiden england 88, book of souls, book of souls live chapter, nights of the dead, senjutsu, so with the back catalogue re-releases you have 1 significant release pretty much every year for the last 10 or 11
3) naively I think maybe they realise that asking fans to pay hundreds of quid for a boxset of stuff they, for the most part, already have is bullshit

Regarding #3, they do not have any problems re-releasing the same stuff in substandard quality (e.g. picture discs, the farce of the recent remastered T-shirts) or the same music in whichever remastering they like that particular year. Thus, I agree: it is a bit naïve to think that their opinion of asking the fans to fork out a significant amount of money for stuff they might already have is bullshit. ;)

Re-remasters, I don't think there's much choice, EMI went bust so Parlophone/BMG are going to want to milk the back catalogue they've inherited.

Personally I agree a cassette tape is a bit lame for the 40th anniversary of this landmark album, as I have no means to play it and no nostalgia for the format. But I also see no need for (or means of getting) anything I would be interested in having. They've already done a making-of documentary, so many interviews that there can't be anything left to say, there's no chance of any in-studio video as they didn't film themselves in the studio until Dance of Death, and a remix or remaster is pointless given how good the album already sounds.

I was gonna make a crack about them releasing a bloated Black Album-esque covers album, but I think Maiden's would be more interesting, and I can only hope it would be shorter.

1) they don't have a hell of a lot of archive material,
You could be right about that. I think Steve had said that they stopped putting songs as a B-sides after TNOTB album, because the songs deserve to be on the albums or something like this. He also said that they ended up doing 14 songs for TXF album and this is very unusual for the band.

I think it's cool to celebrate the anniversaries of your albums at least with something. And let's be honest, everything about TNOTB album has already been told or released - the only thing needed would be a full video release of the Beast Over Hammersmith concert, if they somehow can fix the problem with the lightning (I think it's good). On the other hand, for the 40th anniversary of the Iron Maiden and Killers albums, they could have released a lot of cool stuff, methinks.

For album anniversaries, I'm most interested in live/video recordings or unreleased songs (interviews, covers with Eddie), not demos, rough mixes and similar stuff. For example, it would be more interesting if they release a full live concert for POM or SIT abums (with some video bits) and some stuff from the 90's. Maybe Maiden have more archive material from the Reunion era albums, who knows.

IMO, this release is something nice and ridiculous at the same time. This is good for the fans who lived in the 80s, but for the new generation this is futile, as they are more into CDs and digital supports. And releasing only a cassette to celebrate the 40th birthday of TNOTB album is weird. I would prefer a pack containing the vinyl + the cassette + the re-release of the TNOTB puppet sold by Asylum. That would have been awesome.
