What defines your country?

Yes, the Indian civilization wasn't the earliest, sorry about that. Egypt and Maesopotemia ( the old name of China, FYI, LC) are undoubtedly the oldest civilizations.

[!--QuoteBegin-smx+--][div class=\'quotetop\']QUOTE(smx)[/div][div class=\'quotemain\'][!--QuoteEBegin--]American football is the 2nd most popular spectator sport in the world[/quote]

Um.. I beg to differ. If you were talking about the money involved, then maybe. But popularity has to do with viewership. I think Cricket beats American football to it by a big margin. I can see why you'd think so, though. What with the superbowl and everything.

Not really. Most (if not all) of those styles originated from the blacks, as Maverick said, who were brought across in the slave trade. Rock & roll, although being a white orientated genre, comes from jazz and blues and both of which originally come from the slaves.

The current state of affairs would define it as a war mongering, illiterate high school graduate populated, ethnocentric, spoiled, and of course - gay marriage paradise!
It's sad to say that there is all this crap that does permeate the global general thought of the USA, but every country has its good and bad. Additionally, if you think that the aformentioned describes every US citizen, then you only cast yourself in the same pile of shit-swilled ignorance that you think this country is populated by.

I would like to think that what defines this country is opportunity...... you only make of yourself what you think of yourself.

Sorry to do this to you Abhi, but I must!

Your post above leads me to believe that you think Mesopotamia is an old name for China. It's not. "Mesopotamia", translated, means "Land between the Rivers", the Tigris and Euphrates Rivers, in modern Iraq. The old civillizations there were the Akkadians, Sumerians, etc.

[!--QuoteBegin-The Ancient Mariner+May 28 2004, 06:53 PM--][div class=\'quotetop\']QUOTE(The Ancient Mariner @ May 28 2004, 06:53 PM)[/div][div class=\'quotemain\'][!--QuoteEBegin--] Not really.  Most (if not all) of those styles originated from the blacks, as Maverick said, who were brought across in the slave trade.  Rock & roll, although being a white orientated genre, comes from jazz and blues and both of which originally come from the slaves. Those blacks who invented those forms of music were Americans. Whether citizens or slaves, they were still American.

abhi - I've been doing some net-searching to find out what really is the most popular sport. I can't find any TV viewship statistics right now, but I have seen in that past that American football is #1 and soccer is #2. If you go by participation, I've seen answers that included basketball, running, swimming and volleyball - but the most common answer seems to be golf. The only list that I saw that even contained cricket had it listed at #20.

LC, abhi - bush* gets the asterisk after his name because he's not a legitimately elected president. It goes back to Roger Maris' old home run record, which was listed for many years with an asterisk because some considered it to be illegitimate. Some people like me who despise bush* have simply extended the concept to politics.

Ah.. you didn't have to go through all the trouble to make your point. Doen't really matter which is more popular. What does is that I love cricket as much as you do football. Or atleast I think you do.Which is your favourite team?

Besides, nobody in America is familiar with the sport cricket any more than they are with the insect. They simply don't bother enough to do the survey. We back in India do, but sadly enough, don't bother enough to put it on the net.

The American population might be well below that of India, but the access to the idiot-box is still higher. So, any statistics that you might find will still show football as more watched compared to nothing (cricket). Anyway, like I said, doesn't really matter, so let's enjoy our games.

Hey, these things are important. On a global scale, there's nothing that can compare to soccer/football. It's played everywhere. And that's because it's such an easy sport to play. You need.

Two (2) people.
One (1) ball.

Go nuts. To increase fun, add more people!

Cricket's big too, but I'd also suggest rugby as another great international sport.

SMX, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but America's three sports (American football, baseball, and basketball) are hardly international. They're played in a lot of places, but it's rare that anyone aside from the USA can compete in these. Especially American football. It's called that because no one else plays it. Canadians have their version, but that's about it.

Of course, I have to be the same about hockey. There's only 7 or 8 countries that can compete internationally. That's hardly a great international sport.

And good one with bush*!

Well I'm Half English and half Australian, But I was born here, and I am living here, so I suppose i'm more british.
As for defying our country in the stereotypical veiw it may be seen as, cups of tea, fish and chips, HP sauce and mixing eggs with beans and people talking posh. Most of this is true, however I grant the 'tally ho!' stuff rarely happens...

I agree about American football. And to answer abhi, my favorite team is the mighty Green Bay Packers.

Baseball is also very popular in Japan and the Caribbean islands. But beyond that, you're right again: it's not played in many other places.

I suppose one thing that defines America is that we have taken a lot of what the world has to offer and changed it to something that is our own. Sometimes this has been good, like the forms of music that we invented or creating American football (which developed from rugby, historically). Sometimes this is bad, like developing versions of "beer" which the rest of the world recognizes as little more than colored water.

Anyway, this is it - I'm done with the sports junk. [!--emo&:D--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/biggrin.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'biggrin.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Mexico, the most beautiful country in the world! no other nation has such diversity both in scenery and people. We have Deserts in the North, A huge valley in the central region and jungles in the south. We are peppered with pyramids and ruins from ancient cultures and the clash of the spaniards and the natives gave place to the CHURRIGURESCO, Spanish art (paintings architecture etc) done by Natives who added a little something of their own, making it new and unique. Something else I love about my country is the fact that there is no political correctness, you are responsible for your own stupidity (if you spill McDonald's coffee on yourself, that's your problem, not McDonald's) and Tequila. Great Beer and Great nightlife..well in Mexico City anyway [!--emo&:D--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/biggrin.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'biggrin.gif\' /][!--endemo--].

The Duke to the rescue, again. Thanks, mate. I appreciate you doing this, as my history knowledge is (clearly) very poor. I guess my knowledge of history is based only on teatime conversations and stuff, although I'll never goof up about science talks ( I am a mojor in electronics and communication engineering). Anyway, thaks again, and next time, I'll get my facts checked before posting them.

What about the Czech Republic, Finland, Sweden? They have medal-contention teams. Slovakia and Germany have talent too!

It's Beethoven that was German.

Incidently, my German professor told me once that Austria has "turned Beethoven into an Austrian and Hitler into a German."
