Thel's qualification for this game is rather dubious. The song proper is barely over 7 minutes, and the remainder is a spoken-word combination outro/intro for Gates of Urizen. But whatever.

I kind of agree. I think that to quality as an epic, the song should be around or over 10 minutes in length.

This way, half of Opeth's discography is "epic!"

I gave Zep my pity vote. CFH gives a convincing argument for it, especially considering Thel barely qualifies. Technically Thel is still probably a better song, but Achilles is a monster in its own right.

For the record, I would have voted for Metallica had the song been up against Dante.

I find that second pair very difficult. Best long songs from both bands (although: these days I might prefer Stygian over Dante). I guess I'll play them in a row to make up my mind.

edit:

Dante's Inferno is dark, evil, and has nice, fast rhythmic moments. It is very good in shaping an exciting atmosphere. In certain passages it gives me images of ancient eastern cultures. The keyboards and modus attribute to that. This song has a bigger "cool" factor.

However, the Nightwish song is more beautiful. It is more consistent. Most, if not all parts are very strong. The melodies, including the vocal lines, are very strong. And that's what's won me over.

So I went for Ghost Love Score. At some point I had goosebumps, and that is certainly something that should not be ignored while making this choice.

First pair was easy. Travel In Stygian is one of the best Iced Earth songs, and while ...And Justice For All is pretty cool, it can't match the other song's epicness.

Second pair was super tough. Dante's Inferno is my last song in this game, it's also by my second favorite band and has my favorite singer. However... Ghost Love Score is just too good and that performance is one of the best ever... If it was the studio version, I'd pick Dante, but since it's the live one, I have to vote for it.
