DON'T SAY THAT.
Why? Are you afraid ol' Dick will take you out on a hunting trip? The man shot his FRIEND IN HIS FACE! His friend then had to apologize for the inconvienience he caused the Vice President. Dick Cheney is an evil man. :o
He asked me to go out to hunt Whitetail deer.  I would only go if Ted Kennedy drove. :P

Interesting way to lose sleep at night:

What does the man who shot his FRIEND in the face do to someone he doesn't like..?

So, here we are.  Countdown To Change.

My son phoned me this morning, telling me he was somewhere in that mass of people, watching the Capitol building.  They were there at 8am (eastern) and would be waiting until noon.  I have to say, I thought it was cool that he got to see that, but until this morning, I wasn't envious; I am now.

Saw it on CNN...

Didn't miss a thing..

(Dude stumbled a little when he took the oath... does that mean Jinx..?)  :S

He was probably wondering where the snipers were. All joking aside. There are alot of peckerwoods where I work and that's all they talk about. The truckers all say they know people who can put a round through  the diamond on an ace of diamonds at a thousand yards. But they all talk alot of bullshit and being by themselves all the time they start to believing all their own Bullshit. But still its scary there are people who feel like this.

On a lighter note there were a shitload of buses and motor coaches at work, everyone heading down to take part in the festivities.

Bush is gone!  I still don't believe it, I sighed watching Marine One vanish with Dubya inside.  We now live in The Age of Obama.  I'll read through his inaugural address soon and return with some highlighted passages.  It was a quality speech.

It was good!  I liked the imagery that he used.  One particular statement was '...we need to pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off....' (speaking of the nation as a whole)-- to me, that statement brings an image of 'the defiant baseball player', someone who has had a high hard one just miss his head.

Ha ha!  Good point.  The man is a great speaker.  We have written about that before, and everyone says that.  But it is something else to be watching his speech, to feel the emotions from him, and have a positive feeling about the future of this nation.  You know, I have always been happy with my country, but he makes me feel as if I can take great pride in what we, as a country, can do.

It was an amazing speech, brilliant in its content and eloquently delivered. I'm not even American and I got excited about the possibilities, he really had me cheering by the end. Although I haveto say, when he finished his speech I just wanted him to get off the stage quick (isn't it sad that I thought that?). I also found it hilarious how the camera (at least on CNN) kept on panning over to Bush during the speech almost as if to show him pretending to understand the words. I especially liked how he linked the current hard spot facing America to the hard spot they faced at the very founding of the same nation and the quote he used from George Washington, it was very clever. Actually, I don't think there was anything I didn't like about the speech (aside from all this talk about America being such a great nation but I mean, he is the president of America so no complaints there). Wow, I can finally say Obama IS president of the US...its such a relief. Let's hope it goes well, and that he lives to see his second term.

It was a great speech...

And I liked Rev Joseph Lowery's speech. He did that 60's thing...

Lord, in the memory of all the saints who from their labors rest, and in the joy of a new beginning, we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around... when yellow will be mellow... when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right. That all those who do justice and love mercy say Amen.

QFT!  :ok:

Boy does the new President have one helluva mess to clean up. Well we have a unified government once again. Let's just hope the Democrats can get done what the Republicans failed to. I just hope they don't release the rest of the $700 billion to the banks. The fucking banks are just sitting on the money the all ready got  and the credit freeze is still on. All of my credit card limits were lowered. I pay on time everymonth and I still got whacked. If the banks go under, let them. I am perfectly capable of getting by because I prefer to pay cash and live in my means. I still live pretty much as I did when I made less and dont get what I can' afford. Hopefully our new Government can find better uses for the bailout money.

Too bad Ted Kennedy had a seizure at the luncheon. I wish the best for him.

Amen to that. I still can't believe there are people in my country ignorant enough to want to harm the President because he is'nt white. The man is our President and people should'nt let their fears and ignorance make them want to harm Obama. It is one of the greatest things to happen to this country, that the majority of the people are able to put race aside and choose the best candidate for the job. I truly liked the part of his speech where he said "We must  pick ourselves up and dust ourselves off.
Bush was not a very good president, but I would never want to see him harmed and I wish him well as he returns to private life.

Unlike me, who REALLY wants to see him harmed, and I hope he dies from testicular-rotting after months of INTENSE suffering...   :devil2:

What happened with the word faithfully in Obama's oath?
-------

I Do Solemnly Swear…(Line, Please?)
By Adam Liptak

For a couple of smooth-talking constitutional experts, Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and President-elect Barack Obama sure had a hard time getting through the constitutional oath of office.

The oath of office being administered to Barack Obama by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. (Doug Mills/The New York Times)There was, first of all, a false start from Mr. Obama, who started to respond before the chief justice had completed the first phrase. Mr. Obama ended up saying the first four words – “I, Barack Hussein Obama” – twice.

Then there was an awkward pause after Chief Justice Roberts prompted Mr. Obama with these words: “that I will execute the office of the president to the United States faithfully.” The chief justice seemed to say “to” rather than “of,” but that was not the main problem. The main problem was that the word “faithfully” had floated upstream in the constitutional text, which actually says this: “That I will faithfully execute the office of the president of the United States.”

Mr. Obama seemed to realize this, pausing quizzically after saying “that I will execute –”

The chief justice gave it another go, getting closer but still not quite right: “faithfully the office of president of the United States.” This time, he omitted the word “execute.”

Mr. Obama now repeated the chief justice’s initial error of putting “faithfully” at the end of the phrase. Starting where he had abruptly paused, he said: “the office of the president of the United States faithfully.”

It was smooth sailing from there. All of the words in the oath were uttered, along with “so help me God” at the end.

People will argue about what the failure to utter the words in the precise order required by the Constitution means. But it will be an academic argument. It is not clear who would have standing to raise the argument that Mr. Obama had not become president as a consequence, and it is hard to believe that any court – or other body – would want to adjudicate the question.

There is, in any event, no rule against a do-over. When questions were raised about whether Calvin Coolidge should have been sworn in by his father, a notary public, he took the oath again, this time from a Supreme Court justice.

Mumbling about mumbling is constructive...

Mountain out of a molehill...

...said the academic.

But thanks for learning me a new English expression. We, the Dutch say (a.o. expressions) "to make an elephant out of a mosquito" (but then said in a different word order).

Well, I guess this article is especially interesting for people who noticed these awkward moments (now I know why they happened), and for the ones who are interested in the literal text of the oath.

The same expression (mosquito, elephant) is used in German too. You can also say "storm in a teacup" in English.

Yeah, I guess it's not uninteresting in regard to what you mentioned, but I heard a lot about that today, and kept thinking to myself: "They were nervous. They forgot to say a word. So what?"

To be fair, it was Justice Roberts's first time delivering the oath of office as well.  He's not a canny veteran or anything similar.

The Constitution specifically states that Obama becomes president at 12:01 PM, Eastern Standard Time, regardless of whether or not he takes the oath of office, and regardless whether or not the oath of office is fumbled.  It doesn't mean he's not president - if you watch the video, at 12:01 exactly, the Secret Service agents switch their focus from Bush to Obama.

We have that one as well. "Een storm in een glas water".
