Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

Red is republican, blue is democrat, right?  That's funny, because here, blue stands for right-wing and red for left-wing.

Today is the Biden-Palin debate.  Should be interesting, I hope Biden tears Palin apart (preferably not literally).  Some videos like thisand thisgive the impression that she won't stand much chance.  They make me cringe and laugh, because even though some of the shit she says is funny, it's fucking scary that she could be President of the United States in a few years.

"Explain to me why that [Alaska's proximity to Russia] enhances your foreign policy credentials?"
"Well, it certainly does, because our next-door neighbours are foreign countries.  They're in the state that I am the executive of."
"Have you ever been involved with any negotiations for example with the Russians?"
"We have trade missions back and forth.  it's very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the airspace of the United States of America.  Where do they go?  It's Alaska, it's just right over the border.  It's from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there, they are right next to our state..."

The scary thing is, this isn't some offhand remark or being caught off her guard; this is her elaborating on an earlier statement, despite her claim on the same video that it had been misquoted.

SMX and other Americans, I suggest you get your arrangements made for moving to Europe before the main rush comes. I hear that you have good chances by applying as a political refugee or something.  "Fleeing from 12 years of stupidity" should also work.

"I think they're just not used to someone coming in from the outside saying, 'You know what? It's time that normal Joe Six-Pack American is finally represented in the position of vice presidency,' and I think that that's kind of taken some people off-guard,"
from here. The problem is, I definitely would not want "that normal Joe Six-Pack" running the most powerful nation in the world...

My friend in France (well, currently in London) has been telling me this for two years now...

(Assuming there's no "malfunction" in the Diebold machines.)

I was speaking to a lady in Florida on the phones the other day, and she works as an electoral certifier for the Democrats as a lawyer, and she's scared shitless of these machines.  She swears inside and out that they're designed to drop votes to the GOP.

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

Aaarghh!! I just saw some interview footage of the real Palin on TV and she is really worse than that parody! That parody was a compliment!

This is the dumbest woman who has ever had anything to do with politics, in history.

:scared:

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

She's one of the least qualified candidates to ever run for the presidency or the vice presidency.

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

If she hems and haws and umms and stammers her way through the debate tonight - or crafts more nonsensical streams of sentence fragments - then she's sunk.

Which is of course exactly what I'm hoping to see. "Jesus healed the dinosaurs so we could watch Russia from my backyard - all of them."

I look forward to Tina Fey on Saturday.

As long as they don't ask any questions about abortion and dinosaurs, because that will fire up the evangelicals.  The idea is to make her look like an idiot, not give her the (in my opinion, stupid) label of being "strong on values".

Sarah Palin: "I joined a team of mavericks."

I can't resist...

I know He Who Must Not Be Named. He Who Must Not Be Named is a friend of mine. I served as a Moderator with He Who Must Not Be Named.  You, Sarah Palin, are no He Who Must Not Be Named.

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

I thought she did pretty gosh darned good in the debate.  :)

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

She was very well prepared and put in a good performance, I felt.  I disagreed with some of her stances.  However, I do think Biden beat her, just not nearly as badly as I was expecting.  She was very bad at staying on topic, but very good at covering it up.

I watched on CNN, and I found the during the debate tracking they did to be most interesting.  Suffice to say, people did not seem to react to the GOP party rhetoric, which gave her a tough go of it all in some areas.  It still doesn't alleviate my fears about her - I still think she's wildly inexperienced - but I can see how it would put some people at ease.

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

Well, she reads everything..... absolutely everything that is put in front of her.  :D

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

She had a habit that me and my friends kept cracking up at while watching the debate.  Always when Biden was talking, she kept glancing up at her notes and then back at the camera with a little smile.  We imagined her thinking "oh crap oh crap oh crap what's he saying where is the answer to that in my notes???" while at the same time trying to look involved and positive.

I also kept cracking up for some reason whenever she mentioned Alaska.  I found her term "up there in Alaska" particularly hilarious, for example.  Dunno why.

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

The most interesting chunk from today's update at http://www.electoral-vote.com/:

"Politico reports that McCain is closing down his campaign in Michigan, terminating his TV ads, and moving his staff there to Wisconsin, Ohio, and Florida. If true, this is a major development. Michigan is one of only two Kerry states McCain has any realistic chance of winning (the other being New Hampshire). If Obama wins all the Kerry states, as now seems likely, and wins Iowa and New Mexico, both of which are almost in the bag for him, he needs only one more state to win. That means McCain must win all the swing states: Florida, Virginia, North Carolina, Ohio, Missouri, Colorado, and Nevada. Obama is leading substantially in a number of them. McCain does not have a statistically significant lead in any of them."

Re: USA Elections: Candidates Comparison

Still voting for McCain, flame away. I have a vote.  :)
