The original walk-on Wickerman Eddie, 2000

Considering the length of the other songs on that album, the only other suitable choices would've been The Mercenary or The Fallen Angel. Maybe they though the edit of Silent Planet to be more catchy or accessible to audiences? Who knows. Always been a weird decision.

Silent Planet in particular is odd, it was a single yet they barely played it. Is there a story behind that? Recommentation by the record company, but Steve had no interest?

If I remember correctly, the band wanted to release Brave New World as a single but the record company forced them to release Out of the Silent Planet instead.

As for the "why would Maiden let the record company influence them", let's not forget that the 90s were a rough decade for them commercially. Still a legendary band, but they had to nail the reunion. There was no room for potential mistakes or too much experimentation. I can see record companies wanting more strict contracts in situations like that.

I know nothing of these supposed 2nd singles, interesting news but I know that Silent Planet is a total banger. Good choice for a single. BNW would have been a decent choice as a single for the live album, the video probably would have gotten a good run on the music channels.

Would have been good to have Planet and Fallen Angel played at Rio. I kind of assumed that was the point of playing them at the London gigs, as a run through for an extended set at Rock in Rio. Strange that Mexico and Argentina got them but Chile and Brazil didn't.

Odd little thing altogether.

Mayhap they were both to be integrated into the Rio set but the band weren't happy with the performances (or crowd reaction?) so they were dropped.

Important questions for Bruce's next talking tour, fo sho.

They probably went down as well at the end of the gig as a fart in a two-men submarine, hence them being replaced with Run to the Hills.

I hear ya brother. But seems weird to me to just add them on, totally out of place. So I wonder if the original idea was to iron them out then add them to the set in more appropriate places for Rio in particular.

Or maybe they just thought "fuck it, we've played about 30 or 40mins of hits in a row, let's bang out 2 of the new ones, just for us."

Tis a curio.

Actually, now I think about it, off the top of my head, were any of them good between 1990 and 2010?

The one on the Dance of Death tour was good (definitely much better than its predecessor, King Edward from the GMETID tour) and the one they used on the Somewhere Back in Time tour was outstanding (it was not new though).

Apart from DOD, there haven't been any iconic Eddie designs between the early 90's and 2011 so it's not much of a surprise the walk-ons didn't deliver.

Yah, I'm with ye on SBIT, I'd forgotten that bad boy.

There is that. Personally I don't care for any Eddie from VXI until TBOS. I like the general design and aesthetic of BNW but it's more the colours and the vibe that floats my boat as opposed to there being a magnificent Edward.

Wonder if Maiden will whip out the Drone Eddie's for next years live shows a la Wacken that time...

And I seem to remember The Mercenary was supposed to be the second single.
I never knew that. Makes sense. The title track and a catchy and anthemic song like Mercenary. Fallen Angel could have been a great single too.
Out Of The Silent Planet is a perfect singalong and melodic single.

The record company forced them sounds weird, isn't it. The story for Wicker Man's different chorus was the same? I guess Maiden made an exception only for the Reunion, important times after all.

And made them edit the chorus.
Editing the chorus for the music video of the single was odd. I don't think Maiden have ever done that before.

Maybe they were testing them for RIR, maybe they just wanted to play more new songs and to make the set fresh, they were filming so maybe they were planned for release, but the huge show was the highlight. It it is atypical for the band to play 2 new songs at the end of a set no matter the leg of the tour. I think Fallen Angel is a good live song. Silent Planet was fine, but both weren't that easy at the end of the set for Bruce. Unlike Mercenary. The reception in SA is usually good for new songs too, but against Run To The Hills after the Reunion...

I disagree. Fear, BNW (yes, even just a head) and FF for sure. Some of the others are noticeable.

As for walk-ons, definitely not the early 90's ones, even the tree. But Ed Hunter, DOD, FF, imo yes. For its time, ofc. Since 2008 they are better.
