The Official Maidenfans.com Rankings results (2004-2016)

I havent voted so I cant have too strong an opinion but, I mean, in all seriousness, Bring Your Daughter and Quest for Fire are Rolls Royces compared to Age of Innocence.

Regardless, good list, cheers, LC!

It's not my list. It's our list! Go and rank them if you haven't yet, or change your rankings if you did and want to!

If "bring your daughter" is a Rolls Royce, then Age of innocence is a McClaran P1.. retail value 3.7 million U.S $. :innocent:

On a serious note. This thread is AWESOME!! Looking forward to it all!! This adds a new dimension to life!! Way to go Loose!

QFF and Weekend Warrior so low? I know they're scoffed at a bit but I'm genuinely surprised, as they're both quite well put together songs, just not to everyone's taste.

QFF admittedly has cornball lyrics, but it's not that bad of a song. WW doesn't even sound like a Maiden song to me...

Actually, Weekend Warrior has grown on me a bit, it's still a weird song but not as bad as I once thought. QFF on the other hand, isn't bad, but it's not great either especially compared to the other songs of the classic era.

Speaking of a POM track reminds me, To Tame A Land ended up in the top 50 or so when I went through yesterday and tallied the tracks up as they stand right now. Interested in seeing where it will end up in the overall rankings because, while a good song, it's just nothing compared to some of the other epics, like Rime, Alexander, and Seventh Son. Actually, the guitar solo just sounds like they realized Hallowed was a success and they wanted to see if they could continue that. It's not bad, but it's just not as good as the others.

Long story short, looking forward to seeing where it'll end up.

what are these ratings based on? The section of each album with each song ranking? Is that what is going on?

145: Gangland - The Number of the Beast (Smith, Burr)
Average score: 6.21/10 Deviation: 1.29
The Number of the Beast 1/9

We're entering the part that I have been fearing since I started contemplating this list. The 6s. Gangland scores 0.41 higher than the previous entry, and takes us out of the official stinker territory into the "forgettable" territory. Most people agree this song, and many in the 6 range, aren't that great, but they aren't that bad, either, making them hard to write about. Lots of people have good things to say about Clive's drums on this track, and then they note everything else is sorta blah - almost as if the drummer wrote the track. Statistically this one is getting worse rankings farther on, again peaking during the 2006 ranking at a 7.00, before sliding down into the sub-six area during most of the 2010s. I suspect this one will lose some impetus over the years.

The "solo expert" for the Commentary is a friend from Holland known as Forostar, btw.
I like the drum intro, kinda reminds me of Van Halen - "Hot For Teacher" for some strange reason.
Over the years, I’ve grown to respect many thing about Gangland: the drumming performance; the unique rhythmic pattern; the risky chord sequence; the way Bruce pulls an interesting performance out of an incredibly unmelodic melody. But one thing has never changed — I just don’t really like the song.
that's what happens when you get your drummer to write something...
I'm agreeing with everyone who says worst off of the album.
Average song, except drumming.
THE MOST forgettable song ever, by the time its finished i cant think how to rate it.
This is another song that I have recently started to finally apreciate. It is a great rocker that can really get you pumped up. The chorus is not that great though.
I always thought that this song was vastly underrated, at least Clive´s drumming comes nicely up front.
Adrian seems to be the only member willing to co-write songs with the drummer.
I think they made the correct decision. "Gangland" fits better with the rest of the album while "Total Eclipse" sounds better as a standalone B-side.
The small parts that are good are very good, but truth be told, other than that, the song doesn't have much to offer.

I agree it's the weakest on the album, but the guitar work to me actually sounds quite strong, at least more than most would have you believe. I enjoy it. Total Eclipse is better but Gangland fits the album more. Glad they kept it.

T143: Tailgunner - No Prayer For the Dying (Harris, Dickinson)
Average score: 6.24/10 Deviation: 1.83
No Prayer For the Dying 3/9

Welcome to the Meh Zone! Six of our next ten songs, including this little ditty, will be from the early 1990s, so you had better get used to hanging out here! Fun fact, this is the only Iron Maiden studio song to be marked as Explicit on Spotify. I guess Bruce's Fokker joke didn't pass muster in Sweden. Maybe they just didn't get it. Speaking of not getting it, most Maidenfans didn't. A lot of critique of the early-90s Bruce singing style here, the raspy, harsher sound, but a few people really dug it. This one was in the 6-and-lower range for most of the early 2000s, but has recovered to mid-6s since 2011, meaning this could be a few ranks higher up in a decade or so.

Choice comments:

While not one of Iron Maiden’s best songs, it certainly allows for some interesting historical background information.
the way especially the second verse is sung, it sounds more like a teenager playing Combat Flight Simulator on his computer. Singing style and lyrics are on collision course.
This song itself has an interesting intro. We hear two distorted rhythm guitars instead of one solo, a harmony, or (a) cleaner guitar(s). The guitars are doing different things, something which I always appreciate.
This song is quite exciting musically, but singing and lyrics really drag it down for me. Nothing against anti-war irony, but this is an example on how not to do it.
great song and a great opener. I love the vocals on this and how Bruce came from a very clean vocals to a more raspy sound. Also, this album heralded in the change in Maiden's stage wear. Out went the spandex and in came the jeans.
Likewise I don't particularly like the singing style, nor lyrics, and while Bruce's earlier cleaner style might not have suited this song, that just underlines the absence of any real fondness I have for this track (in the scheme of all things Maiden).
Unfortunately for Tailgunner the previous 3 openers raised my expectation levels to unrealistic heights.
No prayer for the fillers. Worst opener since Invaders. It's still a ok rocker, but nothing special.
Great energic atmosphere. Not the worst album opener, had potential.
When not trying to compare it to Aces High, it sounds better.
Welcome Janick! Your first solo is a good one.
If you haven’t noticed by now, Bruce truly loves writing about airplanes.

No Prayer For the Dying 4/9
Top 100: 2004

This one was easy! Same album, same authors, same rank. All I had to do was change the name. Coincidence? I think not. You have to wonder if the supposedly growing tensions between Steve and Bruce were reflecting in their co-authorship by this point. Some people really like this song, most think it's only OK, but everyone agrees - the music video rocks. Somehow, this track ended up 79th in 2004, ranked as an 8.00, then the bottom fell out and it hit just above 5.00, before starting a slow climb up to the mid-sixes. The current generation values it above its history, so it might inch up over the coming years.

Choice comments:

One of their more happy tunes, but I don't think it fits all too well with the band. It certainly doesn't fit the lyrics. One of the best songs on the album, but compared to other albums it's just sub-par.
I like Holy Smoke. It took me a while to get into it, but now I dig it.
I’m not enough of a musician to say this definitively, but I would be surprised is there is a simpler song in the catalogue. I get why Maiden saw the need to strip things down after the pomp of Seventh Son, but this isn’t gritty, it’s fluff.
But it's not a bad song at all, Davey's solo is one of his finest from the 90s, and if the band chose to throw this number into next years setlist I don't think I'd be the only one in the crowd raising devil horns.
The song is quite happy and poppy and the video is pretty good. Yes the lyrical content meant a bit more back then than it does now, but it doesn't deter me from liking the song.
That video is really fun. Impossible to look at it without smiling.
a below average song, but no disastrous effort
Used to be a top 15 song for me, but doesn't age well, even though it's catchy and has good lyrics.
If the title track wasn't the very next song on this album I probably would have broken down crying after having listened to the first 2.
I think it's a gleefully entertaining song. I like the sarcastic lyrics and the main riff. I'm not entirely comfortable with the somewhat raw sound but it doesn't worry me much. It feels dated lyrically but that doesn't bog it down IMO.
It's an angry song, with a befittingly aggressive vocal by Bruce, and the solos are awesome, particularly Davey's!

Onto the reunion again, for our second of three songs written by drummers. In case you're wondering, we won't touch on another reunion-era album for another 19 songs. Can you guess which reunion song is considered the worst not on Dance of Death? Bet you can't! This song is very stable ratings-wise, scoring in the mid-six range for the entirety of the 2010s, while starting off very strong in 2004 (which is a theme with albums, usually their first year in they are very high, then they drop) and hitting the low-5s for the rest of the 00s. This song is torn between people who think the music is pretty good and people who despise the lyrics. It was difficult to find good quotes here as people pretty much say the same thing over and over again. Welcome to the Meh Zone.

Maybe even fire should never have been discovered. Damn Prometheus!
Great effort by Nicko. Solos are kickass, but the rest of the song is... the same.
The song isn't my favorite at all. H's solo is really great, but the end it's a little reminiscence of 'The Mercenary's one.
The essence of the lyrics is: cloning humans is wrong, what would it be like for the clones, etc.
Nicko started writing songs for one reason only: he wants to use Iron Maiden as his preaching stool.
If the only noteworthy thing about the song is that Nicko wrote it, then it's not a particularly noteworthy song. It has a few nice bits, like the guitar in the intro, but that doesn't save it.
Solid song, this definitely gives you that "filler" feeling.
No. Just no. Sorry, Nicko, but this is as "Maiden on autopilot" as it gets.

Average score: 6.43/10 Deviation: 0.76
No Prayer For the Dying 5/10

No Prayer For the Dying becomes the first album to have half its songs on the board with this particular track. This song meanders very little in ratings, staying in the six range. Firmly within the Meh Zone, as you can tell by the comments below. A few love it, a few hate it, and most don't think about it so much. Sorry, that's all I can really find to say about this track. Oh, one more thing - I literally forgot what track I was doing, and had to look it up. Twice. Should tell you something.

Choice comments:

The name of this song is somewhat weird, shouldn't it be Fate's Warning? Has it ever been discussed here? I know that a number of regulars are pretty strict about their spelling and grammar, this certainly shouldn't have gone unnoticed...
one of my favourites of the album. I love the Dave co-written songs on NPFTD, together with Mother Russia they are among the best ones.
It definitely belongs to the better half of No Prayer. That being said, it's still not that memorable, and the chorus is completely mediocre.
This is one of the band's most underrated songs. It was my favourite on the album the first time I heard it - which was about eight years ago now - and I still think it's very good.
Nice solos section but then comes back for one run through of the chorus, which seems anticlimactic.
The lyrics I don't find particularly exciting or interesting.
Really boring song. I listened to it again like 15 minutes ago and I can't remember anything from the song, except some parts that remind me of Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter.
I can tell that this song was trying so hard to be more grand than it ultimately ended up being. I can neither like it nor dislike it. It's so-so.
A slightly meh song with a good chorus and a few other enjoyable features.

Scream for me, Maidenfans! Scream for me, Maidenfans! The Iron Maiden! Deee de dee de de deee de dededede...

One verse three times! Raw, unbridled energy! Played at every concert! The first song from the debut album to enter our list, and probably the one people most expected to see closer to the bottom. Spoiler alert - at least one album from this song will be ranked very, very, very high. Bet you can guess which one! Hint - it's not Sanctuary. Fun fact - this is the first time during this process that I have seen a Forostar post using the word "couplets"! Lots of people think the same thing on this one: not so great on the album, really fun live. After starting at 7.66, this song rocks in the six range for the rest of its existence, never again approaching the concept of being in the Top 100 Iron Maiden songs. Still, it's had one Top 100 appearance, though Holy Smoke's was higher.

Choice comments:

Its very strange how a so simple song can drive audiences crazy when this one is played live.
They song has some real energy in it, especially on versions played live with Paul. The lyrics is not very good, not at all. But they sort of represent the attitude of early maiden.
The chorus I find the weakest part of it, even though I understand it's anthemic purpose. Nicko never played the song like Clive did. During the couplets Clive plays "normal" bass-snare-bass-snare, while Nicko copies the pattern of the preceding harmony
Their worst song. I don't care if it's an "anthem" or if it's a live staple, it sucks.
I'm totally in love with the soundhouse tapes version as opposed to the album version, it (like the version of Prowler) is raw and fresh
More an iconic ritual than a song. In a study of Maiden's interlocking guitar parts, this would be one of the important early chapters.
Of course, this song is not a masterpice, but it is not boring, and it is a great live moment.
Its not that bad that many of you say, but its surely overplayed and I'm so tired of it! This song could use some trimming, as the vocals repeat over and over again. But I like the energy, and its an important song for the band for sure.
I've always thought of this as more of a punctuation mark than a song.
Doesn't quite beat something like To Tame A Land, Rime Of The Ancient Mariner or Empire of The Clouds.
