This is awesome. Keep up the good work, LC!

OK, I will.Go and add your votes to the songs in the Song Commentary forum, and help the stats evolve!
I havent voted so I cant have too strong an opinion but, I mean, in all seriousness, Bring Your Daughter and Quest for Fire are Rolls Royces compared to Age of Innocence.
Regardless, good list, cheers, LC!
QFF and Weekend Warrior so low? I know they're scoffed at a bit but I'm genuinely surprised, as they're both quite well put together songs, just not to everyone's taste.
They are based on the rankings on the forum, collated semi-annually, going back to 2004.what are these ratings based on? The section of each album with each song ranking? Is that what is going on?
The "solo expert" for the Commentary is a friend from Holland known as Forostar, btw.
I like the drum intro, kinda reminds me of Van Halen - "Hot For Teacher" for some strange reason.
Over the years, I’ve grown to respect many thing about Gangland: the drumming performance; the unique rhythmic pattern; the risky chord sequence; the way Bruce pulls an interesting performance out of an incredibly unmelodic melody. But one thing has never changed — I just don’t really like the song.
that's what happens when you get your drummer to write something...
I'm agreeing with everyone who says worst off of the album.
Average song, except drumming.
THE MOST forgettable song ever, by the time its finished i cant think how to rate it.
This is another song that I have recently started to finally apreciate. It is a great rocker that can really get you pumped up. The chorus is not that great though.
I always thought that this song was vastly underrated, at least Clive´s drumming comes nicely up front.
Adrian seems to be the only member willing to co-write songs with the drummer.
I think they made the correct decision. "Gangland" fits better with the rest of the album while "Total Eclipse" sounds better as a standalone B-side.
The small parts that are good are very good, but truth be told, other than that, the song doesn't have much to offer.
While not one of Iron Maiden’s best songs, it certainly allows for some interesting historical background information.
the way especially the second verse is sung, it sounds more like a teenager playing Combat Flight Simulator on his computer. Singing style and lyrics are on collision course.
This song itself has an interesting intro. We hear two distorted rhythm guitars instead of one solo, a harmony, or (a) cleaner guitar(s). The guitars are doing different things, something which I always appreciate.
This song is quite exciting musically, but singing and lyrics really drag it down for me. Nothing against anti-war irony, but this is an example on how not to do it.
great song and a great opener. I love the vocals on this and how Bruce came from a very clean vocals to a more raspy sound. Also, this album heralded in the change in Maiden's stage wear. Out went the spandex and in came the jeans.
Likewise I don't particularly like the singing style, nor lyrics, and while Bruce's earlier cleaner style might not have suited this song, that just underlines the absence of any real fondness I have for this track (in the scheme of all things Maiden).
Unfortunately for Tailgunner the previous 3 openers raised my expectation levels to unrealistic heights.
No prayer for the fillers. Worst opener since Invaders. It's still a ok rocker, but nothing special.
Great energic atmosphere. Not the worst album opener, had potential.
When not trying to compare it to Aces High, it sounds better.
Welcome Janick! Your first solo is a good one.
If you haven’t noticed by now, Bruce truly loves writing about airplanes.
One of their more happy tunes, but I don't think it fits all too well with the band. It certainly doesn't fit the lyrics. One of the best songs on the album, but compared to other albums it's just sub-par.
I like Holy Smoke. It took me a while to get into it, but now I dig it.
I’m not enough of a musician to say this definitively, but I would be surprised is there is a simpler song in the catalogue. I get why Maiden saw the need to strip things down after the pomp of Seventh Son, but this isn’t gritty, it’s fluff.
But it's not a bad song at all, Davey's solo is one of his finest from the 90s, and if the band chose to throw this number into next years setlist I don't think I'd be the only one in the crowd raising devil horns.
The song is quite happy and poppy and the video is pretty good. Yes the lyrical content meant a bit more back then than it does now, but it doesn't deter me from liking the song.
That video is really fun. Impossible to look at it without smiling.
a below average song, but no disastrous effort
Used to be a top 15 song for me, but doesn't age well, even though it's catchy and has good lyrics.
If the title track wasn't the very next song on this album I probably would have broken down crying after having listened to the first 2.
I think it's a gleefully entertaining song. I like the sarcastic lyrics and the main riff. I'm not entirely comfortable with the somewhat raw sound but it doesn't worry me much. It feels dated lyrically but that doesn't bog it down IMO.
It's an angry song, with a befittingly aggressive vocal by Bruce, and the solos are awesome, particularly Davey's!
Maybe even fire should never have been discovered. Damn Prometheus!
Great effort by Nicko. Solos are kickass, but the rest of the song is... the same.
The song isn't my favorite at all. H's solo is really great, but the end it's a little reminiscence of 'The Mercenary's one.
The essence of the lyrics is: cloning humans is wrong, what would it be like for the clones, etc.
Nicko started writing songs for one reason only: he wants to use Iron Maiden as his preaching stool.
If the only noteworthy thing about the song is that Nicko wrote it, then it's not a particularly noteworthy song. It has a few nice bits, like the guitar in the intro, but that doesn't save it.
Solid song, this definitely gives you that "filler" feeling.
No. Just no. Sorry, Nicko, but this is as "Maiden on autopilot" as it gets.
The name of this song is somewhat weird, shouldn't it be Fate's Warning? Has it ever been discussed here? I know that a number of regulars are pretty strict about their spelling and grammar, this certainly shouldn't have gone unnoticed...
one of my favourites of the album. I love the Dave co-written songs on NPFTD, together with Mother Russia they are among the best ones.
It definitely belongs to the better half of No Prayer. That being said, it's still not that memorable, and the chorus is completely mediocre.
This is one of the band's most underrated songs. It was my favourite on the album the first time I heard it - which was about eight years ago now - and I still think it's very good.
Nice solos section but then comes back for one run through of the chorus, which seems anticlimactic.
The lyrics I don't find particularly exciting or interesting.
Really boring song. I listened to it again like 15 minutes ago and I can't remember anything from the song, except some parts that remind me of Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter.
I can tell that this song was trying so hard to be more grand than it ultimately ended up being. I can neither like it nor dislike it. It's so-so.
A slightly meh song with a good chorus and a few other enjoyable features.
When the River Runs Deep? Can you guess which reunion song is considered the worst not on Dance of Death? Bet you can't!
Its very strange how a so simple song can drive audiences crazy when this one is played live.
They song has some real energy in it, especially on versions played live with Paul. The lyrics is not very good, not at all. But they sort of represent the attitude of early maiden.
The chorus I find the weakest part of it, even though I understand it's anthemic purpose. Nicko never played the song like Clive did. During the couplets Clive plays "normal" bass-snare-bass-snare, while Nicko copies the pattern of the preceding harmony
Their worst song. I don't care if it's an "anthem" or if it's a live staple, it sucks.
I'm totally in love with the soundhouse tapes version as opposed to the album version, it (like the version of Prowler) is raw and fresh
More an iconic ritual than a song. In a study of Maiden's interlocking guitar parts, this would be one of the important early chapters.
Of course, this song is not a masterpice, but it is not boring, and it is a great live moment.
Its not that bad that many of you say, but its surely overplayed and I'm so tired of it! This song could use some trimming, as the vocals repeat over and over again. But I like the energy, and its an important song for the band for sure.
I've always thought of this as more of a punctuation mark than a song.
Doesn't quite beat something like To Tame A Land, Rime Of The Ancient Mariner or Empire of The Clouds.
