The Concert Thread

Last month, a couple of days after seeing The Raven Age Iron Maiden in Montreal, I was at Bloodstock Open Air - a three day festival in a field in England. The headliners were Sabaton, Parkway Drive and Scorpions. Sabaton were the best of the headliners, I got bored after three songs of Parkway Drive and Scorpions were very underwhelming and definitely running on empty now. I won't review the entire festival, because aint nobody got time fo' dat, but some of the highlights were Dee Snider, Countless Skies, Grand Magus, Anthrax and Eluveitie. There was also a Manowar tribute band called Womenowar who were the loudest band at Womenowarfest and played on the biggest stage. I got one of Scott Ian's guitar picks too, which is nice. KK Downing's cameo appearance with the other Manowar tribute act Ross the Boss was pretty cool and turned it into a Judas Priest tribute act.

The weather was a bit shit though. It started out fantastic when I arrived on Thursday, but rained heavily during the night and caused much of the site to be a mudbath for the rest of the weekend. There was very strong winds on Saturday which caused people's tents to make bids for freedom and also a cancellation (Cradle of Filth, so no loss) and delays on the mainstage. I was hoping they'd have to ditch Parkway Drive who apparently had issues getting into the country because their ferry was struggling with the winds, but sadly they played their set. I don't know if I'll go next year. It depends on the line-up really.

The next show I'll be going to is Ancient Bards at a tiny Power Metal festival in Birmingham. I did need a break from concerts and travelling after going to Montreal then flying back to the UK straight after the concert to go to the festival.

28/8 Ancient Bards + others inc. Luke Appleton, Birmingham
19/10 Killswitch Engage, Birmingham
26/10 Thrice/Refused, Birmingham
31/10 Beyond the Black, London
25/11 Halestorm, Nottingham
28/11 Sumo Cyco, London
2/12 Thursday, London
21/12 Alter Bridge, London
8/2 Delain, Bristol
7/3 Testament/Exodus/Death Angel, Manchester

And hopefully Dream Theater, if they ever announce their fucking tour dates.

So last night we made the trek to Montreal for Demons & Wizards. Despite some difficulty parking, we were able to scarf down a few tacos and make it to the show at a reasonable time. I thought for sure with the amount of people ahead of us that the floor would be packed, but we were able to get a t-shirt and end up 3 from the barrier, so not too bad at all. I guess the early people wanted to sit in the balcony. Fucking posers!

As we waited to get in, Sea Shepherd, a conservation group (read: eco-terrorists) were protesting Tyr outside, encouraging the crowd to boo the band due to the lead singer participating in traditional Faroese whaling. I asked if they still rammed fishermen, and they responded by screaming about dolphins being killed. I'm sympathetic to the idea that maybe we shouldn't kill dolphins, but I think if your group is one that has committed attempted murder, then maybe you've ceded the moral high ground.

Anyway, nobody booed Tyr.

The band themselves were pretty good, I haven't really listened to much of their stuff, but I might do so in the future, even just to piss off Sea Shepherd. Attila Vörös, their new guitarist, looks uncannily like someone I went to university with. I spent 4 songs trying to get a good picture to show a friend, so he probably thinks I'm a creeper. Oh well. I believe this setlist is the same as the one they played in Montreal.

Next up was Lizzy Borden. Met a nice couple from Massachusetts who had made the drive in order to see D&W three times in five days, and we agreed we were a little apprehensive about the band. None of us seemed to know much about them, so it was quite surprising when they came out. Subsequent research has taught me that Lizzy Borden is the name of the lead singer, and, well, this guy is clearly a huge fan of Kiss. Multiple mask changes, makeup, costume changes, giant platform boots, glittery bodysuits, a blood-spitting act with an axe (I got my hand covered in fake blood, which ended up with me being unable to use my phone for some hours, as I didn't want to get it covered in syrup). Was he a talented singer? I mean, not really. Was he fun as hell to watch? Better believe it. Won't seek out the music, probably would watch again. Pretty sure the guitarists were local, as they looked a little familiar (like I have seen them in the crowd at local shows before). Setlist is the same as here, I believe.

And then there was the main act. Wow. This was one of the best shows I've ever seen. Hansi was on fire, I've never heard someone sound so pitch-perfect compared to the album. Jon Schaffer was riffing with the best of 'em, although he was this odd bright-red colour, so I hope he's healthy. Jake Dreyer did a good job on the leads, but that's unsurprising considering his talent level. The setlist is here. It was a great setlist, hitting almost every grand song in the D&W catalog, and hearing I Died For You live with Hansi was extremely special for me. Poor Man's Crusade, The Gunslinger, Gallows Pole, and Fiddler on the Green were obvious highlights of the night. Multiple times Hansi and Jon said the Montreal crowd was the best on the entire tour, so as a reward, we were the only North American show to date to get a play of Dorian - that was really special. Hansi's stage presence was very odd at first, as his motions are limited and very precise, but he draws the crowd in so easily that he doesn't need to jump around. In his features, mannerisms, and words, he reminded me of an old professor of mine. It was quite a thing to watch, a man so unassuming commanding a thousand plus insane fans. And the fans were insane, it was a proper European crowd.

Had to pull Eluveitie as I get back the previous day from Europe, and I will need recovery time, plus I was asked to make the evening available for family. Hadn't bought tickets yet. However, Powerglove was announced for Ottawa next year, so adding that. At $17, can't miss it. Anyway, the updated list:

Had the opportunity to see Iron Maiden for the first time, in short this was the best concert I have ever seen. The band is absolutely amazing and it is incredible what they are capable of in their 60s. The charisma from the band while performing is felt every moment throughout the show and the band was incredibly tight. Setlist was as discussed at length throughout the forum is amazing and it left me with a new appreciation of some songs which I hadn't spent the time truely getting to know well enough. Stage is beautiful and the props were amazing. By the 7th song I could feel my voice getting hoarse from singing alone to every word. It was unbelievable... I may or may not have bought a ticket for tomorrow nights show which will result in some sleep deprivation on Friday but Maiden is worth that.

Okay this is going to be a rant about the culture and behaviour of audiences in today‘s metal (and rock). I don’t have the time to tweak my arguments, but you’ll get the idea.

Watching live footage from early 70s biggest rock concerts, like Led Zep or Deep Purple, the audiences seemed to be really listening, being quiet when the music was quiet, and going with it when it got loud and crazy. Today at a, let‘s say, Maiden or Metallica concert, at least 50% of the audience is drunk, bawling not even the slightest in tune, chatting and yelling bullshit to each other during quiet passages, clapping completely off beat, texting and filming with their phones - I mean, you get the impression nobody‘s listening, the music doesn’t mean shit. When I go to a gig, I want to hear the singer sing, not the drunks around me. Yeah there’s space for scream for me, but not all the fucking time! Also, I’m not talking about sitting comfortably à la boring classical; those Led Zep audiences could go wild, but together WITH the music!
The chatting thing is also the reason why most bands play way too loud all the time with no quiet passages, so it’s impossible for the audience to talk.

This thing makes me doubt the future of humanity.

Rant over.

I don’t know, I exaggerated, but that’s what my dad always tells me about rock music, and I can’t really completely disagree there.
I still do like it loud though. And Maiden are #1 Bruce Dickinson.

I think it’s true at least for American audiences, but I’m not sure if that’s a recent thing or if it was always that way. I wasn’t there, but I’ve seen writings about bands such as Yes or Pink Floyd having unusually attentive/chilled out audiences in the 70s compared to other rock bands.

Well I don’t know about America, I just know Europe. There seems to be something about the early 70s really, but that magic was quite short it seems. I started going to rock gigs in 93 and there were no phones obviously, but apart from that I don’t know if I remember more attention in general. The sound was probably louder back then, because of less regulations, and generally way more rough. But lots of people still smoked at gigs and it was alright.

Yes! This is the shit I love to read. Especially the part I highlighted. I remeber feeling this way about Futureal when they played it in 99.

I've heard that Queen shows in the early days used to be quiet affairs with the crowd silent during songs but sometimes people were dancing on the spot. Then at some point the crowd started singing back. Live Aid was another level completely.

I've spoken to Sea Shepherd activists a few times. They have an association with Gojira and I've seen them at Gojira concerts (in the venue) with a stand taking donations and handing out leaflets. I didn't know they rammed fishermen though, that's unfortunate.

Hansi's stage presence was very odd at first, as his motions are limited and very precise
He basically just paces around from side-to-side and often raises one arm with the middle and index fingers extended. The only thing he ever says is "Absolutely amazing!"
Had to pull Eluveitie
That's disappointing. They were, to quote Hansi, absolutely amazing when I saw them last month and a brilliant way to end a festival after a pedestrian Scorpions. Even though I don't know much other than their most recent album I would happily see them again at one of their own shows. They are playing in London before the end of the year but playing second fiddle (see what I did there?) to Lacuna Coil. Give me a headline set and I'll go.

Finally saw The Fixx last night for the first time. Was a more laid back show than I'm used to but very tight performance. However some songs (like I'm Life & Cause to be Alarmed) were more uptempo rockers. The singer is strange; like a cross between a more active Bryan Ferry & a more laid back Mick Jagger. He really gets into the lyrics! The bassist stood mannequin still; he made Ian Hill look like Steve Harris!

This tour plays about half the Calm Animals cd, which is not available on Amazon digital so those were the songs I didn't know. Will have to buy the cd used I guess. The audience sang the chorus on the hit songs well so good participation. Club was about 75% full.

Very jealous of UFO tickets, GNR put on a good show sets can be a little bloated but overall I've enjoyed both shows I saw them at. as for Aerosmith, well I've heard they're worth the ticket prices and I'm personally still toying with the idea of going to see them.

A friend of mine talked me into going to the Saturday of Riot Fest, so I'll be doing that in three days. The headliner that day is Slayer, so that'll be nice to finally be able to see them knowing that soon they'll be done for good. Some other bands of note playing that day include: Rise Against, Anthrax, Testament, GWAR, and Andrew W.K.

Oh, I forgot to mention, I'm seeing Cheap Trick and ZZ Top this Saturday (the 14th). Super, super stoked for ZZ Top. They have a lot of albums I love. Cheap Trick I don't know as much, but I definitely know the name.

Bought tickets for Conjurer in Birmingham next month. Only £10, so I thought why not? Should be a good night. One of the best death/doom metal bands on the circuit today.

Sleep Token - Manchester Academy 3, 4/10/19
Black Peaks - O2 Institute, Birmingham, 6/10/19
Alice Cooper - Resorts World Arena, Birmingham, 11/10/19
Chris De Burgh - Symphony Hall, Birmingham, 21/10/19
Conjurer - The Flapper, Birmingham, 30/10/19
Fever 333 - O2 Institue, Birmingham, 2/11/19
Ghost - Motorpoint Arena, Nottingham, 16/11/19
Behemoth/Slipknot - Arena Birmingham, 24/01/20

Still a few I'm thinking of adding to the list, like Annihilator, Last in Line, Municipal Waste, and Evil Scarecrow. Oh and maybe Pet Shop Boys, my mum and I are big fans.
