Is this the first time ever jannick uses a wah peddle on a maiden album ?

I imagine this will be paid live but with Bruce hitting all them D5's, it will be very hard for him to sing it

Is this the best track on the album?!! I don't know, I seem to get a new favourite for every day that goes by.

For me, the best on the album & 1 of their very best ever. The riff at the 5:50 mark I think it is, immense. This is Maiden! Even the startup after the acoustic intro is incredible. The synths add to the atmosphere. Does not drag at all despite the length. Love every second of it. Maiden tells a story & creates an atmosphere like no one else can.

The best riff of the album! Totally Powerslave-ish. Unfortunately the music gets too melodic and doesn't excite.

The riff from 5:49 to 6:13 is a self-plagiarism, such as the intro from Shadows of the Valley. Too lame for a band like Iron Maiden.

One of the best on the album!

What riffs! What vocal melodies. Vocally the best song as well.

This album has some unique qualities like there is no bad song, there is an abundance of great music and there's a lot of versatility and freshness. One of the causes of these qualities is that guys like Janick and Bruce have delivered some of the best stuff of their songwriting careers.

Official Lyrics:

Sacrifices buried with kings
Accompany them on a journey with no end
To an afterlife that’s rich with fruit of all the gods
And to face the demons
Of their underworld haunts

The sentient is sent to seek out all the truth
A flight to earth that is a given from his birth
To rise from ashes of the dead
Out of the fire is sent to fulfil man’s desire
By power day and night and death he ruled them
The sky and earth and the fires too
Two headed reptile symbol of his reign
Universes of the underworld
A life that’s full of all the wealth and riches
Can never last for an eternity
After living in a golden paradise
The ultimate sacrifice

Prophecy of sky gods, the sun and moon
Passing of old ways will come true soon
Falling of ages, forest of kings
The search for the truth, the book of souls

The rulers of planets and stars
The power of the kings of traders and the wars
Planetary cycles and the phases of the moon
Is in the document a kingdom they will learn
They were praying to the gods of nature
And were living in the cities of stone
Towers reaching upward to the heavens
Sacred wonders for the world unknown
Make their lives be a mystery no more
Records kept and the passing of laws
Sacred gods to the book of lies
When a civilization dies

Prophecy of sky gods, the sun and moon
Passing of old ways will come true soon
Falling of ages, forest of kings
The lost book of souls, destruction begins

Ascending the throne wearing feathers and shells
He brought back their lives from the void
Alien invasion brings nothing but death
Mass exodus and plant life destroyed

Domain of the Earth to the journey of truth
The underworld caves, Mayan slaves
Defeat of the dark Lords
The ultimate proof
In the place where the ancestors rule

The book of souls

A fantastic song, deserving to be the centerpiece of the album. My favorite of the album so far. The part after 7:30 is insane, Maiden on full speed. The best rhythm section part of the album.

Typical Gers intro.
Janick is a great songwriter imo so have been really looking forward to this one.
Have to say so far Bruce is sounding amazing on this album.
This song has that eastern sound found on the Nomad.
Pretty strong song and quite a variation in the rhythm guitar riffs.
The lyrics are really strong as well.
Janick's solo around the six minute mark is immense.
There is a riff midway through the song that sounds like something....
Losfer Words maybe.....
Anyway I am now off to listen CD 2!!

My only gripe is melody. I mean - it's amazing but when I saw cover of the album etc. I was hoping for something that would sound more "mayan".

Like a Latin American Dance of Death? Yeah, I was expecting more character about it, but liking the Janicky bits lots. I hate to say this....but this song is actually having less impact on second listening. There's no especially memorable melody, which is maybe why I couldn't remember much about it.

Most memorable part for me is when Bruce is singing
They were praying to the gods of nature
And were living in the cities of stone
Towers reaching upward to the heavens
Sacred wonders for the world unknown
Make their lives be a mystery no more
Records kept and the passing of laws
Sacred gods to the book of lies
When a civilization dies

I think it's sounds very " Mayan" especially with the phrygian scale and the heavy use of synth in the chorus

I don't know shit about scales so maybe that's why I wish for something easy to spot on first listen. :)

Steve is on fire on this one! On recent albums (including this one) he most often stays in the background and doubles the guitar riff or whatever, but here he totally rocks :shred:

Steve's bass line during the opening riff is out of this world. This song is mind blowing...Powerslave x 10 in imagery and atmosphere.

The prechorus and chorus are etched in my skull and I cannot remove them. Incredible melodies, particularly before Bruce's final line.

What does Mayan music sound like? All Mayan art was destroyed when the civilisation was wiped out so how do we know?

That is why i put there "" thingy. But I have in mind something tribal or native american. Not the same but still something.
