Thank God For Finland!

Sounds like Greece will be giving Cyprus 12 points this year again. Now there's a surprise.  :p
Cyprus didn't pass.  And the song was good.  I'd never vote for the Cyprus if the song wasn't good.  Well actually, I won't vote for anything.  I'd never vote in Eurovision.

From wikipedia
'The President of a Greek restaurant and bar owners' union, Mrs. Niki Kostantinidou, has made a public plea[2] to the people of Finland and Greece to not allow Lordi to perform in the Eurovision Song Contest 2006, because she claims they are a satanist group. This statement has been criticised within the Greek internet space as few Greeks share Mrs. Konstantinidou's opinions. In the plea, Mrs. Konstantinidou claims that she speaks on the behalf of "all Greeks" also claiming national superiority (saying that "all" Greeks are born "sane").'

And religious narrow-mindedness reaches new levels of blinkered vision!

EDIT: Update from http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/04/17/news/finn.php
'
First, Finnish religious leaders warned that the Freddie Kruger look-a-likes could inspire Satanic worship. Then critics called for President Tarja Halonen to use her constitutional powers to veto the band and nominate a traditional Finnish folk singer instead. Rumors even circulated that the five members of Lordi were KGB agents sent by Vladimir Putin to destabilize Finland before a Russian coup and that explained why they refused to take off their freakish masks in public.'

We should all just act gr1m like Black Dragon and have no interest in popular culture at all... eurovision... who needs it?

Grimdeed, let's all go to the inverted forests and listen to Sort Vokter and Nargaroth! In a more serious tone, I don't see why Finland needs Lordi to win the Eurovision contest. It's not like anyone takes this pointless contest seriously. ^_^ Finland's best bands are the ones that never get any attention anyway. There are great bands such as Demigod, Thergothon, Skepticism, Unholy, Demilich and Wyrd. ;)

Agreed, Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, Pagan's Mind etc. Yet, like I said, they stood out and that in itself is great, they are getting attention whether good or bad who cares. I doubt they will win, If they do it would be great again, just for being different.

I did laugh when I saw Lithuania! They just sang the same thing over and over and the bald guy's dance was hilarious. I was expecting him to do something weird as he went out all serious and then just went bonkers while the other guy played the electric violin. But aside from the visual antics I found the song lacking.

I must disagree with you there. The Lithuania song had everything! If I cared, that's who'd get my vote. But I don't, so I'm to get a bit sloshed. :ok:

Now, Finland is definitely the country I want to move to...  or do I? Anyway, Lordi won the Euro-crap contest. What a breath of fresh air in the middle of this shit! Well done!  :okok:

:D

Let's see how next year will be like... Will all the countries send similar acts? Will Finland find the guts and send Childrem of Bodom in for the kill? Stay tuned... :D

I really enjoyed their victory, a lot more than Romania coming in 4th...

While not my cup of tea, I must say that I am really pleased they won. Shows that people who voted by SMS in all the participating countries are more open-minded that one would think (even if youngsters might vote a lot more than older people).

Way to go, Finland !

Cheers

Not overly surprised Lordi won, but good job they did. If this opens the doors for other rock acts, I hate to say it but the UK may well send in a really cheesy rock act next year.

All the UK Eurovision board of pickers (or whatever guise they go under) needs to do is not take it seriously and find an act that will gladly parody itself.

French presentor turns himself to national dickhead! :)

A high-quality video of LORDI's winning performance at the Eurovision Song Contest final on Saturday (May 20) in Athens, Greece can be downloaded at this location (75 MB ).

At the end of LORDI's performance, right before the file is cut, you can hear one of the hosts (this is taken from French television) saying, "Finland has been participating in the Eurovision contest for the past 44 years and has never won. They're certainly not gonna win with this."

-Forostar: BHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAA :-) -

More videos of LORDI's performance at the Eurovision final are available at this location.

The Associated Press is reporting that LORDI scandalized some of their Finnish compatriots when their song "Hard Rock Hallelujah" was chosen to represent the nation. At a press conference, the band's frontman said his plan for the final was to "scream louder and turn the amps up."

"This is a victory for rock music ... and also a victory for open-mindedness," the band's lead singer, Mr. Lordi, said after the win, Finland's first. "We are not Satanists. We are not devil worshipers. This is entertainment."

Combining crunchy guitars, a catchy chorus and mock-demonic imagery, LORDI are reminiscent of U.S. '70s stars KISS, an acknowledged inspiration of Mr. Lordi.

Band members never appear without their elaborate masks and makeup, and do not reveal their true names.

LORDI's latest CD, "The Arockalypse", entered the official Finnish chart at position No. 5 in early March and climbed up to position No. 4 in its second week of release. The album features guest appearances by TWISTED SISTER frontman Dee Snider and guitarist Jay Jay French, as well as former ACCEPT vocalist Udo Dirkschneider and ex-KISS guitarist Bruce Kulick.

Saturday's showdown was broadcast live in 38 countries to a TV audience estimated at 100 million. About 13,000 fans packed the indoor arena used during the 2004 Olympic Games, from Goth supporters of LORDI to cowboy-hatted Germans supporting TEXAS LIGHTNING. About 3,000 police officers were on duty for the event.

Who could those have been for?  Maybe in case the Turkish and Greek entries attacked each other? :innocent:

For the ones who were on Mars and missed this performance. Check the high quality-clip! :-)

This presenter has become the French national dickhead I guess :)

Thanks for the news, folks.

Btw, have you all watched the "shit" because of Finland or just out of boredom? ;)

Nah.  Being Greek and all,  I must say, I don't think Athenians would attack Turkish.  They're more openminded
