Damn I always enter the good discussions late :( at any rate, teletubbies shouldn't only be banned, but shot too. I don't know what pot smoker came up with that crock of sh**, but aside from that. Who cares if the character IS gay? in fact, if he is, they should keep them on, it fosters awarness and understading, once that is done, they can ban and shoot them.
 
Guess what! This morning I turned the telly on to show some cartoons to my kids and a journalist was exlaining this affair in the news... :uhm:
 
Thats ridiculous. How can this be news when millions of children are starving in sub-Saharan Africa? I think we've lost perspective, if we ever even had it.
 
If its about banning homosexuality, then THAT is what should be discussed in the news, and not whether the teletubbies are gay, have a gender, or should be banned. The news people should cover the 'real' issue and not something ridiculous such as the teletubbies. Also, I believe the issue of homophobia has been blown way out of proportion here in Europe and that there are other more pressing problems to deal with (such as the conflict in Sudan, unfair agricultural subsidies, and the environment) than gay rights in Poland.
 
In the French TV news I was referring to, the journalist was explaining the situation and was (slightly) mocking the Polish government's attitude. We are not a country where homophobia is tolerated (although we have a lot of other defaults  :D).
At first glance I said to myself "fuck, this stupid story again" but now I realise that it's an important information in the sense that it illustrates what happens in neighbouring countries. The Polish reaction is silly and it's a good opportunity for all of us to analyse it and make clear we reject such attitude.
Damn, the tubbies never had such an effect on me: I'm turning philosophical.  :smartarse:

There are already threads on these other topics. Fair Trade and the Kyoto Protocol but to name a few. And while the reaction of the Polish government is silly and shows homophobia, I think all that needs to be established here is that we are against homophobia. Now, lets move on.
 
We have no right to dictate terms to other nations or countries, but we do have the obligation to help educate those who have signed onto our particular alliances.  Like the EU.

Well, my basic stance is that we should have equal rights, and that we have the obligation to only enter into military & economic agreements with those nations who share the same values of equal rights.  The Sudan sure doesn't have that, and the West has no real tie in with it.  They haven't even requested peacekeepers so, legally, there is nothing the West can do.

It's really quite simple if you look at international law.  Call me conceited all you want, but in reality, I believe that we just can't forget about Poland.......'s gays.  If they want to be in the EU and NATO, it's time to buy into our philosophy of equal rights.

(And I can say the same about most other NATO members, but as I am attending a gay wedding next month, I get to take the high ground on this one!)

Why is there need to mention the military? The EU has nothing to do with that.
 
I've created an EU thread several months ago that had numerous intelligent posts.  (I'm not trying to pat myself on the back here  ;)).  I cannot recall if the issue of equality was ever brough up in that thread.  I think not.  Does the EU reserve the right to kick out countries that do not obide by the EU agreements?  For example, with a voting system or something similar.  Pardon me if this is completely from left field and may sound strange to ask.
 
Thats a very good question GK, to which I know not the answer. However, I presume that the EU does not reserve that right otherwise the process of getting new member countries would not be so carefully monitored with so many demands upon the candidate country.

Well, I do not know if anybody mentioned this - the problem with gender might be that in the polish language (as in other slavonic languages), the gender is differentiated in language (Tinky winky looked at st. might be translated as 'TW se podival' or 'TW se podivala'). I believe authors of the polish version considered all the teletubbies being males :-) It would be better to consider Tinky Winky being a female :-)

But yes, that is not the main problem :-) The problem is with the discrimination, right.
 
screw the language barrier, the name "Tinky Winky" is enough for me, like does Tinky Winky like to "tinkle winkle" in public or in other more private situation involving a minor? It's clearly a slippery slope that must be stopped.

Personally, I think, political issues aside, that any method to ban this 'orrible POS kids show, is fine by me. Call them, gay, tranny, the "wrong religion", whatever...I'm sure there would be a political agenda that would make it wrong. And I agree that calling something gay to get it banned is ridiculous. But they're banning Teletubbies for crying out loud.  :lol:
I don't know about Europe but here in lil' NZ the shows I watched as a toddler were way more "intelligent" and thought invoking, while still being fun. So a grown man is playing with dolls, at least he's talking properly  :innocent:

See this was what I was trying to get at, in a convoluted way. The issue is teletubby banning, not necessarily gay rights. Well yes gay rights, but as a sort of sub-issue. Ban the teletubbies for all I care...but don't give the bogus reason 'because Tinky Winky is gay'.
