Steve Harris: one of the greatest metal songwriters ever or a magpie?

To me that is, by far, the weakest album released by the Harris-Murray-Smith-Dickinson-McBrain line-up.

Agreed. I can't understand how it became a "fans favourite", it wasn't a favourite at the time according to the contemportary press, and it never seemed to have had a big reputation to me, who became a fan in the early 90's, until the internet days. It seems to me at least, that people rate it because the band ignore it.

What I think is that there's a limited number of note combinations which can be pulled off, and sometimes they overlap with, or are even unintentionally "stolen" from other already existing songs. That's why I don't think "The Nomad" case, for instance, was intentional. At all. Okay, Steve listened to Beckett a lot when he was a teenager. But how many more songs has he heard for the next 20 years or so? I'm sure he's heard a lot more. He could've easily come up with "The Nomad"'s instrumental section without remembering where it was from (or even if it had already been pulled off). As for the other examples given here, most of the melodies presented are simple, generic and overused, so I can't blame Steve for relying on them to build a completely different song (that is, if he even knows all of these songs we're talking about).

I'm the biggest Steve Harris devotee in the world, but theres no way he "accidently" stole the Nomad.

It sold incredibly well at the time and supported yet another huge world tour, why would it be surprising at all that some fans consider it their favorite?

"some fans", yes that's not a surprise at all. But it seems to me at least that it's now maidens best album for most people which is surprising.

Well, for me, SSOASS is better, but SIT is also in my top 3 80's albums. Those albums are so different than the other from the 80's, yet so amazing. They are also the most consistent IM albums IMO, especially Seventh Son, which contains only great songs (CIPWM being the worst one, but still great).

I'm not sure about that. It's currently very popular on this board, but weoften experience trends. There was a time when everybody suddenly hated on Paschendale, and another when people said how overrated ROTAM was, and others when Killers was suddenly all the rage. I'm not really taking this seriously.

With each of the first seven albums, there is a large crowd that says it's the best, and the way group dynamics work, when a few people get very vocal about it, a lot of people who'd otherwise stay silent will suddenly join in. In two months, we might be saying the same thing about POM, or a bunch of people will come out with the argument that NOTB is so overrated that people actually underrate it.

That's not to say that these people are following a trend or that they haven't genuinely thought it's the best album for decades, but just that conversations shift this way or that way all the time. My personal opinion of SIT has remained quite consistent over the years. It's never been my favourite, I think it has a few problems, but I love it all the same for what it is.

The Apparition has nice lyrics, but the rhythm of the song keeps promising a payoff that never divers. That, the fact that the verses have a wholly unimaginable vocal melody and one of Bruce's worst performances (not THE worst, but one of) makes it my least favourite Maiden song.
