Simon Dawson is the new drummer

Again, I think the right choice would be someone like Simon Phillips. Then nobody could argue it and the man can play basically anything (and has played everything).

As I said before, if that happened and Lazarus started the same agenda on Facebook, people would ask him if he is right in the head.

Also, Simon P. knows how to deal with the situation like this from when he replaced arguably one of the top 3 session drummers in a well established band.

I love Nicko and wish he could go on forever but replacing the drummer is by far the least disruptive thing that could happen here. Especially at the level at which these guys perform.

Yes, there will be a difference in the sound but it's going to be relatively plug and play for virtually any professional heavy rock drummer. It's going to be fine. Interesting even. Let's face it, all Simon has to do is play Hallowed and Run to the Hills more like Clive and he'll probably win over the entire forum.

Jazzy drummers do well in metal. Bill Ward, Clive Burr... Vinnie Colaiuta himself did a very good job in Megadeth's The System Has Failed, which in my mind is a very decent late era Megadeth album. You could even sort of mention Bill Bruford's performances in King Crimson's darker records. But I think Steve wants Maiden to be sort of a more straightforward metal band again. Senjutsu felt heavier and more direct than Book or Final Frontier to me. Yes he got like 10 epics in there but also a lot of shorter, "heavy metal" style songs in there too. Felt kind of like a throwback to Dance of Death, as I've said in another thread.

BTW, this is Simon Phillips in more of a hard rock / heavy metal enviroment... What could've been.

But again, I think Simon Dawson will do a good job.

I mean, yeah Simon Philips is amazing but it was never going to happen, I still don’t know why it has been mentioned that often here. It was quite obvious that it would be between Simon Dawson, Joe Lazarus and maaaybe Justin McBrain.

Yeah, that's why I have a slight problem with it... Because they went with the safe option (it's Maiden and S. Harris, so no particular shocks there).

I don't really want the disco version of Hallowed to return, so no thanks. Luckily Steve probably has pretty specific demands over that since Nicko's played it in a very different way from the start and by his second tour the rough outline of how the drum part goes was completely different and remained that way since then.

There is nothing weird or outdated about a British heavy metal band who've always celebrated being a British heavy metal choosing a Brit as their new member.

The contemporary de-emphasis on culture and history is what's weird. Tradition and roots are important to many cultures globally. Nick's replacement was never going to be an outsider unfamiliar with the band or their heritage.

I do not want to derail the thread, but I find it really ironic that a bunch of tax exiles are celebrating Britishness…

Would Jai Patel have counted as a valid option?

Is Simon Dawson really 66 years old?

That's the worst part of it, they chose someone who extends their career with a few years instead of maybe 10.
