Don't feel so bad... "And this sentence got a 6.2." itself gets -0.9 ... where this number is "years of education needed to write that well". Travis may write like a 6th-grade student, but I write like I got dropped on my head. :smartarse:
 
I pasted a number of my earlier posts into the machine to see what would happen. Based on this limited sample size, I found that the readability score goes down as the grade level score goes up. This is, in my view, EXACTLY what is wrong with academia today. (Now go read Orwell's essay on "Politics and the English Language.")

Because if you click the links on the page to read the algorithms behind the scores, it's based on sentence length, word length and number of polysyllabic words (exact formulas vary, but these are the most common factors). The formulas don't check grammar at all. They simply reward infrequent use of spaces and punctuation.

"Should I pontificate extensively, utilizing primarily complex multisyllabic words and deeply nested sentence structures, the algorithms probably will evaluate my ramblings in the necessary manner to manufacture a seriously inflated rating."
