This was pretty interesting. Not sure what the background for this gig was, if he was sick or something, but for the second half of the first chorus he changes the lines and stays low. So this is essentially a decades old tradition at this point :D

Edit: Okay, this show is actually fascinating. Go to 7:30-ish onwards to hear altered vocal lines for the prechorus in 2MTM.

I think I'll keep adding stuff to this comment, because it's actually pretty neat hearing a burnt out and possibly sick Bruce (5th night in a row in NYC) navigating such a challenging setlist. From 12:30-ish onwards we have The Trooper, which he sings almost exclusively low. Instead of the constant B4s he centers the melodies around the root note and the D below (which he also does on the "and as we race towards the human wall" on multiple live albums, here he does that for the majority of verses). Funnily enough this would've been a way for Blaze to get consistently and rather easily through this song.

If I remember correctly, they flew back to North America straight after the Rock in Rio gig, Bruce got sick, and they had to cancel a number of gigs at Radio Music Hall. That bootleg is from the last gig (and fifth on five consecutive days at the venue) before the cancellation.

Apparently five nights in a row, which is insane. Makes for a very interesting listen though. The quality of the bootleg is pretty good as well, so I'd recommend it to anyone who would like to hear Maiden under somewhat different circumstances.

Also, the audience is pretty great, during The Trooper they are singing along every word, making it difficult to hear Bruce at times.

Bruce mentions this gig specifically in the early days documentary. He was sat down for most of the show because he was so ill.

English isn't my first language, but as far as I know "also ran" is used in a competition for someone who didn't win. They participated, they "also ran" (as in the ran too), but they didn't win.

In this case it would mean that it wasn't one of their best known songs, but simply another contender.

Yes that’s precisely what it means. Trooper was historically one of their well known songs, but not one of the absolute top most famous ones like Run to the Hills and The Number of the Beast. Pretty simple.

Ok, TIL that The Trooper is as famous as Run to the Hills and The Number of the Beast I guess. I hear both of those on the radio every second day, I don’t think I’ve ever heard The Trooper on the radio once in my life.

FWIW, most of the casual Maiden/rock radio fans I know are familiar with the Trooper, RTTH, NOTB, and Fear of the Dark. And maybe Wasted Years
