Does Germany and West Germany count as 2 different countries? If so then I'd tentatively guess at Rudi Voller being the one German Footballer I know from that time...

Yes, they do. Especially since West and East Germany played against each other, most notably in 1974.

However, since East Germany officially joined West Germany in 1990, the record is continued for West Germany and is now counted as "Germany".

No and no.

Ok, since we don't want to drag things a lot (or else someone is going to hit Google  :D ) here are some huge hints;

He won FIFA World Youth Championship in 1987 with Yugoslav team.
He played and scored for Yugoslavia in World Cup 1990, and he won Champions League and Intercontinental Cup in 1990/91.
He played and scored for Croatia in World Cup 1998, including one goal in 3rd place match against Netherlands.
He played for both Barcelona & Real Madrid.

So it ain't some obscure player, this person was world-class midfield attacker in his days.

Therefore, the next answer should be correct one  :)

I am ashamed to say that I looked it up. I couldn't stand it anymore, I couldn't figure it out and I had to know it. Well, he was a truly great player indeed, how could I have forgotten that name. Awesome technique.

What he said. I am ashamed of myself.

Ok.  My turn.  I'm changing gears.

This person is:
- a Canadian-American railroad builder/businessman of the 19th century
- called an "empire builder"

Alright, my turn now -
