Ancient Mariner
This is my second favourite Metallica song and in my top 10 songs of all time. I don't really know what to say about it, its an amazing tune with an awesome instrumental section and a  :shred: chous.

This, in my opinion, is the worst track off Puppets. Not to say it's bad but Fade to Black is so much better. That said - 7.

My second favorite of the three 80's ballads. (One is 1st, Fade to Black is 3rd) Great melodies with nice solos. Good lyrics, too. 9/10.

Used to love it, now I'm more meh. 7/10

Check out this song on Cliff Em All, it's a live clip, Lars kills the drums. Say what you want about him since, but he was genuinely good in 1986.

One of the scarce highlights the album. After this, it only gets worse. 8
Tune in next week when Foro tells us that The Godfather was a boring movie and Einstein was a moron.   :D

7/10

My least favourite of the 3 "Ballads" of the 80s but it's got nothing to do with this song being bad, it's just that the other 2 and that good. Like SMX said, there was a time when Lars could actually play good drums. This is one of those times and could be his best ever performance. The riffing throughout the whole song is superb and James' vocals aren't even too shabby either ( I prefer his vocals on One most out of the songs before his "training" though). The later half of the song is genuinely awesome and the instrumental section just kills. An easy 10.

Also, I strongly disagree with Forostar who said that the album drops off after this song. The best song off the album has yet to come and the worst song after this (Leper Messiah) is still very solid.

The problem I have with with Puppets is that I miss the melodic/catchy-aspects from its predecessor. Especially shown on the second half. When Welcome Home (Sanitarium) is over I already have the idea "Well, that was that, the rest is only going to be less".

Generally, I think we can say that more songs on Ride have melodic strength than on Puppets, which relies heavily on riffs. Now if some of those riffs were less repetitive, and if some of the songs had more melodic passages built in, then it'd be a different matter.

Yeah that is very true, Puppets is more riff based while Ride the Lightning is more melodic, and on an Iron Maiden forum RtL will win hands down (Honestly, RtL is my favourite Metallica album as well). That said, not everything has to be melodic and while the riffing on Puppets is repetitive in places, I find that the riffing is so good that it doesn't bother me.

Obviously you like the first 4 off Puppets more but I find that Disposable Heroes outclasses them all in the riffing department (Although Battery probably has the best single riff). Leper Messiah's riffs aren't as good but the one just before the solo and the one immediately post solo (during the Die! Die! Die! section) are still great. I can see why you would call Orion's riffs repetitive, but like I said before, it has never bothered me. Damage Inc.'s riffs are like a full out frenzied attack for me and suit the song extremely well.

Well explained from your point of view as well. Maybe I should try to listen to Puppets without having Ride in the back of my mind (a bit like some people could try to listen to Blaze albums without Bruce in the back of their mind ;) ).

Well we all have different point of view. I mean if we all had the same point of view it would be a boring life wouldn't it?  ;)

But that's the great thing about this forum. You can have your point of view, explain it and not get trolled off like everywhere else on the internet. Everyone here has different songs that they like and dislike, and prefer different genres of music (to name 2 examples), but are willing to accept other people's point of view. :)

Late to this party.
Metallica is not one of favourite bands, but I do like them.
Songs like this are why.
One of their best.

MoP is my least favourite of the big 3, with Justice being my favourite and RTL just behind it. I put it down to less melody as Foro said, and a couple of worse songs (Damage Inc., Battery and TTTSNB).

Ride the Lightning is by far my favorite Metallica album and one of my favorite albums of all time. Fantastic melodic, powerful songs. Master of Puppets based on more of riffing. Some great riffing is there, too, Disposable Heroes is the best example of it and is my favorite off Master. ...And Justice for All based on rhythm more, feels like the album based on drums actually. (That album has Lars' only great performance of his career, some great drumming)

RtL is my favorite album, but I just LOVE this song. Puppets has some very strong moments and this is definitely one of them, even with the solo that never ends.

When it comes to Metallica the first four albums are still their best, the era when they were top of their game and a force to be reckoned with on the metal scene, subsequent albums have been hit and miss, DM being the exception. Puppets is my favourite Metallica album, then RTL, KEA and AJFA, in that order, I rate Sanitarium at an 8, a very high rating in it's self, though I would rate the rest of the tracks on MOP at nines and tens, the title track being my favourite.

Not much of a Metallica fan, I'm afraid. I've always admired a lot of the guitar work, but never liked the vocals. Low 7 on the strength of the lead and rhythm work.
