Couldn't have said it better myself.

You certainly know which sentences to pick for reactions. :)

the music is so damn brilliant I kind of trained myself to overlook it.

There's the beginning!

The distorted guitars in this genre represent power and energy, or can create an atmosphere (eg. Opeth, or an example we all know - Paschendale, or Rime (after RAAIIIIINNN for example)). Its the same thing with voices. I didn't use to like distorted vocals either but I persisted and now I love a lot of them, particularly Opeths and Amon Amarths. For me now they carry a sense of energy similar similar to Halfords screams for example.

Indeed. The energy of the grunt and screams certainly evoke emotions. When I saw Gorefest live, the drums but also the powerful voice grabbed me instantly.

Check this out: Gorefest - Confessions of a Serial Killer (from their legendary 1993 Dynamo Festival gig in Eindhoven, Holland: tens of thousands going insane). Another, calmer song: Reality When You Die

Other bands
Carcass - Heartwork (Live at Wacken 2008)
At The Gates - Blinded By Fear (Live at Wacken 2008)
(Me, Perun and Nush were there!  :rocker:)

I get the need to give any music a chance, but with so much music out there the idea of training myself to like something, or willfully overlooking things I dislike seems, well...what's the point?

I've heard enough grunting to know I don't like it. I'll keep giving these songs a listen and one might click. I mean I don't like yodeling, but it works in Hocus Pocus by Focus and polka ain't my thing, but Fast as a Shark is a great track.

But I'm with Cornfed, it's too bad it's what passes for mainstream in modern metal because it is roadblock for this potential fan.

It's just a matter of taste and cookie monster vocals aren't mine.

Yeah of course, no-one is trying to tell you to like the vocals, we are just trying to explain why we like them and why they are used :)
