Punk Rock

Just out of curiosity, are any of you guys into punk rock? I'd have to say my favorites are (including post punk):

Ramones
Against Me!
Necromantix
Pixies
Tiger Army
The Misfits
Joy Division
...and more!

I would put The Cure on here, but I'm not good with categorizing bands in genres. (I think it's quite obvious I love 'em though!)

The question is whether you like punk music (in which case we could discuss what each of us considers as punk rock, hardcore, post-punk...) or you are into the whole social rebellion thing (which was one of the reasons why punk originated).

Personally, I'm non-anarchist with interest in politics and society. I believe that any system that works in the beginning naturally deteriorates until it becomes abused and dysfunctional. I value freedom and strongly oppose bureaucracy and caste system among people.

As for the music, I enjoy hardcore punk such as The Exploited, as well as the softer approach of The Damned, and ska - for example The (English) Beat. I also listen to bands like Police, The Cure, Trust, and many others who have their roots in punk.

Finally, and I won't say anything new here, you can find punk influences all over the place - in early Maiden, Metallica, Motorhead, all the way up to today's fashion punk. I could also rant about punk and fake-punk, punk vs business, punk vs sign of the times and so on, most of it having been said before.
So, what sums it all up? Punk's not dead, right? [!--emo&:p--]/tongue.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'tongue.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Now, why was I so sure that this thread was going to make you react, dear Charlotte? [!--emo&:p--]/tongue.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'tongue.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

I thought one of the reasons why punk was created was because of a reaction against the progressive rock scene where they felt the musicians were taking things too seriously?

Surely there must be more to it than that. There are people who hate progressive music today but they are not anarchists. I always thought punk and early heavy metal were sort of synomonous with each other in the rebellion aspect. Motorhead and others were among metalheads who had punk influences.

Another reason (the social rebellion one) is a good reason for a genre to be born but why not now? There are still problems with inner city slums but there are not as much anarchists making new music for a laugh. Without the whole rebellion thing punk would never have lasted, unlike metal which will live forever.
Well, that's the question. Did it last or not? What do you think? I would rephrase your statement - Without the whole rebellion thing punk would never have come to life... Now I agree [!--emo&:)--]/smile.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'smile.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Actually, it was mostly a sign-of-the-times thing. A combination of factors:
- music that needed some fresh air (and the history of pop music was not so long, so it was really fresh air)
- rise of conservativism after the hippie era
- disillusionment about society's ability to reform itself
and a few others.

Funny how popular music genres emerge due to fricition with another genre. Take Norwegian Black Metal. Mayhem formed their style out of hatred for Death Metal. They felt that image and attitude must reflect the music they play, and now you know the rest of the story...

What's your favorite Cure album, Charlotte? I'd have to say mine is Japanese Wispers. I like their pre-Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me stuff alot better than everything after it. The 80's new wave sound really hit them on Kiss Me X3. I'm also not to fond of their albums after Wild Mood Swings.

Pornography! Best of all! [!--emo&:p--]/tongue.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'tongue.gif\' /][!--endemo--]
Me too. Seventeen Seconds and Pornography for me, probably, the former mainly because of "A Forest", which is a formally perfect song with great lyrics. I also like its version on Mixed Up.

Mixed Up is a brilliant album. I have never really liked remixes of songs. But that album has remixes that I like better than the originals. Like Lovesong, A Forest, and Close To Me. Mixed Up is probably one of my most listened to albums.

Ramones
Sex Pistools
The Damned
The Clash
Dead Kennedys
Wire
Undertones
Crass

Don't know if Norwegian Raga Rockers and Kjøtt can go under punk, but is is very cool

after reading this thread, I sure I´m a wierdo. Although the genry I like the most is Metal (specially heavy and power), I also madley enjoy both punk and progressive music (well I like grunge too).

I can see why punk didn´t like progressive. as charlotte, i think said, punk was really a fresh new music style. It´s energy, it´s rebelousness, it was great! but it died, I think, very soon. It was an outbreak that spread and suddenly, became corrupted by money (as everything does) and became a cartoon of itself. it´s so sad.

Now, look at todays gay punk scene! it´s outregeous! by the way, I call "emo punk" gay punk; Please, don´t take it as an offense...

And about anarchy, I´m not an anarchist (i´m rather communist), but lets face it, it the best god dammed system on the face of the earth, as long it is only applied to yourself. An anarchist society would be... anarchist. I´m sure it would all get out of hand.

Well, I like some punk. Not this new punk rubbish though.

My favourites are:

Ramones
Dead Kennedys
The Clash
Sex Pistols

Especially The Clash.

I really think this new punk is pure crap.

I'm not a fan of punk in the first place, nor do i hate it but i know how punk used to be about not caring and just playing music for the hell of it, but this new punk is getting on my nerves. its all about how you look or how trendy you are and not how the music really is. like the new punk bands, they show no talent at all in their music and their lyrics mostly mean nothing.

I really couldn't agree more with you, fuzzboy. In fact, I think that the "punk" of today shouldn't even be named that. It's simply pop music, but with guitars. For some reason, this makes these bands think they are punk rock.

To that, I say, no. Simply no.
