Popular Maiden opinions

Going off the Wrathchild praise, I think replacing BTATS with it in 2010 was largely a good idea. I would’ve liked to have seen them find a way to keep BTATS in (maybe replace a different song and move it later in the set) but Wrathchild was overall a necessary addition to the set.
I agree. BTATS was never a great live song. They rushed it too much, and Bruce often didn't sing on time.

Powerslave is the best Maiden album, bar none.
I'll never get tired of hearing The Number of the Beast, The Trooper or Iron Maiden live. Actually, they can play all the classic stables if they want, and I won't mind - I like to hear the new stuff, but as long as it's Maiden I'm all in no matter what!

The 1998 remasters suck. Somewhere In Time is the worst remaster of the bunch.
Is there anyway I could hear the way the originals sound? I think I've only heard the remasters and if they already sound THIS good I'm interested in how much better they could be.

Eh, I don't really understand the fuss? Maybe I just don't have a good ear for changes. IDK.

Maybe a Youtube upload doesn't do it justice but the originals have more space in a way, dunno how to formulate it, everything is kinda more clear? Haven't compared each and every one mind you, but for those that I have even I can hear a difference (and I used to play the bass so not exactly your connoisseur).

I mean there's this ancient parable, a metal band playing, and each member's thoughts, singer: just look at me, here I am at the centre of it all, hear the stuff I can do, all chicks in the audience are mine; guitarist: here's a dive bomb for you, am I badass or what, all chicks in the audience are mine; drummer: here's my awesome drum solo now, and look at those arms I've got, all chicks in the audience are mine; bass player: G!G!G!A!G!F!E!

Ok mr pedantic, so not quite every tour. Thanks for the correction. I’ll sleep a lot better tonight now :p
For some reason I carried a lot of Maiden setlist misconceptions for a while. According to me Rainmaker and FTGGOG were played in 2010 and Early Days tour had Icarus and Fear. It’s not like I hadn’t listened to relevant bootlegs either!

The Somewhere In Time remaster is the most noticeably hideous. I initially thought they were great, too; they were the only ones I had heard up until 2 years ago, I think. However, after listening to the often praised CP32 Black Triangle release of Somewhere In Time (specifically, "Sea of Madness", the first 20 seconds or so) I noticed how awful the remaster actually sounds. The guitars are heavily distorted. The drums sound thin and distant. You can actually hear the distortion caused by the horrible compression. Listen to the remaster again, and then listen to this (which is more or less how it should sound):

And yes, the originals sound better, but to me, the definitive Maiden releases are the 2015 iTunes remasters. Yes, they are, technically, compressed (DR6 is something)—but, I don't know what kind of technology they used so they could manage to compress the audio without making it sound compressed. If I play the originals alongside the 2015 remasters using ReplayGain, I cannot really tell the difference as far as dynamics are concerned.

If it's too compressed then each instrument "steals bandwidth" from the whole. You can easily hear it in SOM example above. Each Nicko's hit (especially bass drum that he's very playful on) makes the guitar(s) more quiet. You can also hear it very well on CSIT or TLOTLDR solo, where the drums make the whole sound very "choppy", especially lead guitar.
SIT has a very unique sound and production; the guitars are especially unfocused and mid-scooped (courtesy of fine GK amps :D), so the lead guitar is always very high in the mix (so it could be heard over all the din). It's much louder than Bruce. If you compress that, you will get distant mush of the rest of the band, and choppy lead guitar because the drums will still get through.
Other albums have more "moderate" production, so their remasters are not as bad
