This is just stupid IMO, Easter Eggs (beyond having Easter in the name) have zero to do with religion and have long been a secular way to celebrate a holiday with a rabbit and eggs that really makes little sense, but always fun for kids.

Seattle school renames Easter eggs 'Spring Spheres'
A sophomore at a local private high school thinks an effort to make Easter politically correct is ridiculous.
Jessica, 16, told KIRO Radio's Dori Monson Show that a week before spring break, the students commit to a week-long community service project. She decided to volunteer in a third grade class at a public school, which she would like to remain nameless.

"At the end of the week I had an idea to fill little plastic eggs with treats and jelly beans and other candy, but I was kind of unsure how the teacher would feel about that," Jessica said.

She was concerned how the teacher might react to the eggs after of a meeting earlier in the week where she learned about "their abstract behavior rules."

"I went to the teacher to get her approval and she wanted to ask the administration to see if it was okay," Jessica explained. "She said that I could do it as long as I called this treat 'spring spheres.' I couldn't call them Easter eggs."

Rather than question the decision, Jessica opted to "roll with it." But the third graders had other ideas.

"When I took them out of the bag, the teacher said, 'Oh look, spring spheres' and all the kids were like 'Wow, Easter eggs.' So they knew," Jessica said.

The Seattle elementary school isn't the only government organization using spring over Easter. The city's parks department has removed Easter from all of its advertised egg hunts.

Re: Political Correctness strikes again (Pt 4 ..Bring out the Spring Spheres)

I heard of this. It is so stupid! I don't know if this is political correctness or just plain stupidity. Reminds me of when Lowes called their Christmas Trees "Family Trees" a few years ago.  ::)

Re: Political Correctness strikes again (Pt 4 ..Bring out the Spring Spheres)

I have a big complaint with this. When my son was in 5th grade, we lived just outside of Boston. They had a pageant just before Christmas break. It was called the Winter celebration. That is not my complaint. They sang some secular songs. Then they sang " Dradel", followed by a Kwanza song. There was no Christmas songs. They closed the show with a very politically correct version of "We wish you a Merry Holiday". They can have songs recognizing Chanukah and Kwanza, but not Christmas. Give me a fucking break. This is what is wrong with political correctness. The double standard in of itself politically incorrect.

Wow. Just... Wow.

Re: Political Correctness strikes again (Pt 4 ..Bring out the Spring Spheres)

I'm a not-Christian and I find this just stupid. Names are names.

Re: Political Correctness strikes again (Pt 4 ..Bring out the Spring Spheres)

No kidding, that is just nuts (and I think weird for small kids too)  ... really many non Christians in the US celebrate these holidays, not in a religious context but you can really argue that Easter and Christmas are pretty secular holidays anymore.   The images you see and songs you here are mostly about the Easter Bunny and Santa versus God and Jesus.

Re: Political Correctness strikes again (Pt 4 ..Bring out the Spring Spheres)

It's all in what you want to celebrate. I'm not a fan of either holiday, but I don't really care about them one way. A kid singing about Christmas is fine, as long as it's a secular song, of which there are dozens. Spring spheres is fucking stupid. Eggs aren't even spheres.

Re: Political Correctness strikes again (Pt 4 ..Bring out the Spring Spheres)

The Bunny and the Fatman have nothing to do with Jesus. Easter and Christmas are much more Pagan in their origins than many people know. They are more a celebration of the Equinox and Solstice.

Actually they do.
Like many Christian customs, Eggs were adopted from Paganism. And Christians see it as a symbol of Jesus' Resurrection. However, they have become very commercial and the whole religion thing is virtually non existent, and I'm pretty sure very few 3rd graders see the eggs as anything more then a gift from the Easter Bunny. It's really harmless.

Wasn't Christmas originated from Saturnalia, not Equinox?

Re: Political Correctness strikes again (Pt 4 ..Bring out the Spring Spheres)

Christmas was moved to the 25th, to accommodate some Pagan beliefs and thus win converts and to also accommodate some in the early Church's belief that Jesus' creation should follow the logic  that God created the sun and Jesus' birthday should follow some same convoluted logic that it should come near the Solar Solstice. Being that there were Pagan festivals around that date, it was easy for the Church to introduce a new one and try to win some converts.

Re: Political Correctness strikes again (Pt 4 ..Bring out the Spring Spheres)

Ok, that makes sense. :)

Re: Political Correctness strikes again (Pt 4 ..Bring out the Spring Spheres)

Almost every major Christian festival and tradition has its origins in another Mediterranean religion, so, no surprise. But holiday days? They are very political. Pick the holiday you want to subsume.

Irish Catholicism has some serious pagan roots in it still.

Re: Political Correctness strikes again (Pt 4 ..Bring out the Spring Spheres)

It was all about the marketing back then, was'nt it?

Re: Political Correctness strikes again (Pt 4 ..Bring out the Spring Spheres)

Isn't it always? Religion is just another story to sell...gotta give people incentives to show up.

Re: Political Correctness strikes again (Pt 4 ..Bring out the Spring Spheres)

Sure, I'll call them "Spring Spheres", but only if I'm allowed to call a minaret a "Prophet Phallus".

Good idea, but make sure you wear flame-proof clothing for a while afterwards.

Got any links to anything supporting that? I ask because I was under the impression that "Easter Eggs" were nothing more than a comercialization of pagan traditions around the Christian calendar of Easter. Being a life-long Catholic I have never heard a priest say anything about eggs during Easter Sunday.

The little I do know is that the "Easter Bunny" is a Celtic Pagan tradition of fertility and rebirth (spring). So Yeah, nothing to do with the Christian Easter. The Easter Bunny is neither pagan nor Christian, but like the modern Santa Claus, a complete corporate creation.

Re: Political Correctness strikes again (Pt 4 ..Bring out the Spring Spheres)

Well actually that's what they taught me at school, but I think I've read about it at some point. (Wasn't Catholic School) You are probably right though.
