One thing that I don't understand (reunion vs. 1980s & early 90s)

They almost went back to interesting guitar work as "late" as on The Final Frontier on at least two occasions:
- the bit after "I'm a soldier of war" ("Mother of Mercy")
- the dissonant guitar chord between the verses of "The Talisman".
...
And then the "cool stuff" went dormant again. ;)

I found the alchemist annoying . The double guitars at the beginnig a bit soft and the rest of the song too. But yes there is some cool stuff in that record better than book of souls i think
 
Isn’t there a correlation between the reduction of twin guitar harmonies and the loss of Martin Birch as producer?

I think a lot of issues with Maiden’s song writing occurred with the loss of Birch.

Don't know about that, their sound was obviously changing even with Birch at the helm. A more evident symptom of Birch's absence is the weakening guitar sound and bloating of songs IMO.

Weaker guitar sound? Than kevin? Come on seventh son has a super clean weak but perfect guitar sound. Fear of the dark has a hard guitar sound? Compare be quick on studio to live version. Maiden live version were better than studio until kevin came. Now the studio version sound as maiden used to be live. I love martin albums dont get me wrong.

I wasn't very clear - I rather meant that was the most evident difference if you compare the first two albums produced without Birch's involvement, i.e. X-factor and Virtual XI
