One thing that I don't understand (reunion vs. 1980s & early 90s)

Priest keep releasing album after album of Hell Patrol and people are delighted with that.

Where? I must find those secret albums.

They almost went back to interesting guitar work as "late" as on The Final Frontier on at least two occasions:
- the bit after "I'm a soldier of war" ("Mother of Mercy")
- the dissonant guitar chord between the verses of "The Talisman".
...
And then the "cool stuff" went dormant again.
