Official Star Wars Thread

Red Letter Media's Mr. Plinkett reacts to the trailer:

Lots of fun videos on youtube regarding Star Wars lately.

Damn, does it have to be a year away? I have probably never been so hyped about a film, ever. (I really haven't, to be honest.)

What can I say about the teaser? I jumped and almost tore the cable to my headphones apart when John Boyega jumped into the frame... I still can't believe it isn't a fake. That part at least. :) The most discussed part is probably the lightsaber design, which I think is super-cool. I can't understand what there is to hate about it by just watching a few frames of it. Anyway, when Serkis concludes voiceover with "... and the light" and the view switches to that hold heap while playing some mildly familiar tune I still can't believe what a hold these stories still has on me... and so many others.

What's important, to me, is how different it felt. Things didn't feel like they had the same clean, streamlined, boring lines as the original. The frames were used in different fashions. We'd never have seen, say, that style lightsabre before. Not only did it have a cool ass crosshilt, but watch it vibrate. It looks like fire. That's badass.

X-Wings cutting across the water? We've actually never seen an X-Wing maneuvering in an atmosphere before, aside from takeoff and landing. And for everyone who says that it is weird that the X-Wing would be the main fighter 30 years later, let me remind everyone that our technology has been stagnant avionically since the 80s, except for package upgrades. F-15, F-16, F-18, A-10, B-1, and that is just for the MERIKAns.

So awesome.

Here's George Lucas's version, by the way:

Watching the Phantom Menace teaser and this one back to back, I guess the number one thing you notice is that the new one is very slim. Phantom Menace was overloaded and had huge, massive images full of everything, while the new one focuses on characters and single actions. That is a good sign, I think.

It definitely looks like a J.J. Abrams movie, but it feels like Star Wars. And that's awesome.

And economically, the galaxy would still be in a bit of a mess. Possibly just working its way out of recession. I love galactic economics.

You've opened up so many questions Brigs... I always thought that, by just building a bigger Death Star by the time of Jedi, the Empire was showing a lack of imagination. Typical of any overstretched, corrupt, late-stage empire? Were they already failing? But, from the look of this trailer, it's only taken 30 years for the Imperial Stormtroopers to be stomping all over the galaxy again. So what happened to the Rebels? A one-term government trying to sort out the economy before people thought better-the-devil-you-know and voted the Empire straight back in again?

While I would argue that it was the filmmakers who displayed a lack of imagination, I admit that is a good point. It would be in line with a corrupt, incompetent emperor. The original novelisation stressed the point that the emperor was just an isolated puppet that others took advantage of. And to be honest - that is how he comes across in the original trilogy. A reclusive mystic, obsessed with religion and detached from reality. What proper statesman would use all his resources to get hold of one guy?

But, from the look of this trailer, it's only taken 30 years for the Imperial Stormtroopers to be stomping all over the galaxy again.

Who knows? Maybe the stormtroopers and tie fighters we see in the trailer are parts of imperial resistance pockets. A rebellion against a new republic, so to speak. That's what the Timothy Zahn novels were based on, I think. I still have to read them.

You know, I watched the trailer again and it's amazing how the Star Wars theme is enough to get even a jaded cynic like me a little excited for this movie.

Thanks, space Obama.

Perhaps this has already been discussed, but I wondered what the die-hard Trekkies and the die-hard Star Wars fans, who in the past could be kind of strongly divided on both series/films, think of a Star Trek director doing a Star Wars feature. Perhaps, these mixed-collaborations happened before, but a director is something else.

I guess it's not an issue here since most people like both Star Trek and Star Wars(?), but I was still wondering if someone is a little bit worried or busy with it.

edit:
Lol, look what I just found!
They should hire J.J. Abrams, though I don't think it would happen since he's too busy with Star Trek franchise.

I almost think it is the opposite. I think the Star Wars fans probably look at the JJ Trek films and seeing him"Star Wars-izing" Star Trek. If anything I think it is the more purist Trek fans that have a problem with JJ. I think the Star Wars fans are pretty happy after seeing the Trek films

I like both Wars and Trek, but that said Trek has always been better for TV and Wars is better for the film medium.
