My predictions are as follows -- the winners will be:

Austria vs USA

Spain vs Japan

USA vs Spain (for the semi-finals)

and on the other side...

Chile vs Nigeria

Argentina vs Mexico

Nigeria vs Mexico (for the semi-finals)

Looks like I got 7/8 of the predictions right (Japan did not make it).  Not bad.  ;)

It's late and besides work and the games I have not much time for else, so I'll keep the summary as short as possible.  Besides nobody wants to hear me drone about details.

Austria vs Gambia (2:1)
USA vs Uruguay (1:1) (2:1 in extra time) -- Uruguay let it slip after what looked like they'd win.  At the end some Uruguayan guys wanted to fight.  There is a lot of immaturity from many players from all teams (as you'd expect from kids  :D).
Spain vs Brazil (2:2) (4:2 in extra time) -- Brazil is so lazy and that's why I did not think they'd win.  Brazil scored two beautiful goals in 39 min. and 41 min. and then went to sleep.  Their first goal is probably the goal of the tournament.  Spain's first goal really seemed like a hand ball but it counted.  The Spaniards deserve to win because they played hard the whole game.  Their rising stars in Adrian Lopez and Diego Capel made crazy runs even in 2nd half of extra time.  Lopez could win the golden boot.  This was my favourite game to watch.
Japan vs Czech Rep. (2:2) (3:4 on PSO) -- After leading 2:0, the Japanese lost.  They gave two penalty shots to Czechs who took advantage both in the 70th minutes.  The first Japanese goal was a beautiful header.
Chile vs Portugal (1:0) -- The Portugese cannot defend on set plays.
Zambia vs Nigeria (1:2) -- Without a doubt the best African team moves on.  All four African teams made it to the knock-off round.  Nigeria usually does well.  I think they'll take Chile.
Argentina vs Poland (3:1) -- The first goal against the Argentines in this tournament came from a counter-attack.  I think Poland only had 2 shots on net.  A couple of Polish players got a little rough and the goal scorer (Janczyk) was sent off with a red card after deliberately kneeing a player for no reason and then blabbing to the ref (see immaturity note above).  This whole tournament has had many red cards and I think more will come).
Congo vs Mexico (1:3)

The Final 8 are: (I'm predicting the winners in bold -- for fun)
Austria vs USA
Spain vs Czech Rep.
Chile vs Nigeria
Argentina vs Mexico -- this is a really tough choice, but given the fact that Argentina had one poor game vs the Czechs I'll go with Mexico.

It will be interesting to see who wins between Argentina and Mexico given that their older counterparts played 3:0.  Both countries looked great against their opponents.

Cheers all!  I'll probably be gone for quite some time.

Very good.

Anyway, besides all the talk of this Teves character as to where he will be next season, the Argentine should be unveiled as a Man U player within the next few days.... or will he? Seems this guy is courting controversy wherever he goes - dodgy agents and all that. ;)

I watched the USA give up a very disappointing quarterfinal to Austria yesterday.  The young Americans were very undisciplined and really lost the game themselves by having one of their players removed and getting four or five other cards.

So The Copa America is almost over and once again the final will be Argentina vs. Brazil. At least Mexico beat Uruguay and claimed 3rd place. In an odd twist of fate in the sub-20 world cup we play Argentina AGAIN, but this time I'm pretty confident that we can win. We played a good game against Congo even though they played an extremely dirty game.

Monday, 16th July. Brazil made history when it won the Copa América for the 8th time after beating Argentina 3-0 in the Final held in Maracaibo, Venezuela. The defending champions, which last won this tournament back in 2004 in Peru, play without stars such as Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Adriano, Lucio and Kaká, leaving Robinho, Júlio Baptista and Gilberto Silva to win this year's Copa América with less-known Brazil players led by coach Carlos Caetano Bledorn Verri, known as Dunga.

You make it sound as though without Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and the others, Brazil is technically a weaker team. Brazil is ALWAYS a strong team, regardless of who is playing and how famous they are. Not to mention Ronaldo and company didn't go because they are OLD.

As for my dear Mexico we were beat by Argentina in the Copa America, the Sub-20 World Cup AND in the Panamerican games in the women's game... it's official, it's a curse grrr.

Well, not exactly, Kaka's only in his early 20s and regarded to be the best player in the world by many 'experts'. Ronaldinho and Kaka pulled out due to fatigue or something. But it is true that Brazil seem to have about 10 world-class strikers at any one time, while most countries are lucky to have one or two.
Argentina had pretty much a full strength squad, I think, and their football is often a lot more exciting to watch than Brazil's I find. The Copa America is probably the most exciting international tournament too - some of the goals were just amazing!

@thousand_suns: I'm not sure about Brazil "making history" though, by winning it for the eight time. Uruguay and Argentina have each won it fourteen times.

Man United turns to FIFA to sort out Tevez transfer

The Associated Press
Wednesday, July 18, 2007
MANCHESTER, England: Manchester United wants world soccer's governing body to help untangle the contractual issues that are delaying its bid to sign Carlos Tevez.

Man United wants to sign the Argentina striker from West Ham, but the deal has been stalled by conjecture over who owns Tevez's contract.

Representatives from Manchester United have been in discussions with the Premier League and West Ham this week over the transfer, but with no resolution.

Manchester United chief executive David Gill said Wednesday that the club planned to ask FIFA's dispute resolution chamber to sort out the paperwork — hopefully before the transfer window ends on Aug. 31.

But FIFA has yet to hear from Manchester United, and spokesman Andreas Herren said the matter would have to first be referred to the organization's legal department to determine if they can deal with the matter.

"We're very confident, as is the player, that the situation will be resolved in favor of Tevez," Gill said in Seoul, South Korea, where the club is on a preseason tour.

"He will then be free to achieve his, and our, wish to join United."

Tevez moved to West Ham with Argentina teammate Javier Mascherano in August 2006 from Brazilian club Corinthians. The move was engineered Kia Joorabchian, whose company MSI owned the economic rights to both players.

The Premier League investigated the transfers in April and found them to break rules on third-party ownership.

An independent tribunal fined West Ham 5.5 million pounds (US$10.9 million; €8 million). West Ham, which had since lost Mascherano to Liverpool in January on a Premier League-approved contract, gave assurances that any anomalies in Tevez's contract had been fixed.

Joorabchian, however, has been dealing with Manchester United on the transfer as he insists MSI still owns the economic rights to Tevez.

The Premier League has said any transfer deal must be between West Ham and Manchester United, and that the Hammers must receive a commercially competitive transfer fee for Tevez to move.

West Ham has also written to the Premier League requesting the matter be referred to FIFA.

Tevez was scheduled to have a medical test Wednesday, but West Ham blocked the move. Under Premier League rules, a player cannot have a medical test unless his club agrees and a transfer offer has been made.

-----------

I guess Man U will loose this case.

One thing Man U want to ensure, so I've heard, is that any such dealing with this player has to be done 100% correctly. I think Man U will get him - eventually - as Teves really does not have it in his heart to be at West Ham next season.
