So the Champions league got of to a controversial start to the knock-out stages in Lille. I did not see the first half but I read and heard later that Man U fans were crushed against the surrounding fence as fans poured in through an entrance opened by the local police. By all accounts, it was done to allow all of United ticket holders in one place - regardless of were in the ground their ticket placed them. The issue here is that this is almost the very same scenario that caused the Hillsborough disaster in 1989 in which nearly 100 Liverpool fans were killed. From this tragic event, the inquiry (named the Taylor Report) had many recommendations - one was the removal of the surrounding fence that barricading in the fans. Why, after 16/17 years are grounds still with these fences and worse allowed to host games in a major competition? Every ground in the UK is now without the fence and is all-seater - other federations should have learnt from Hillsborough, but clearly they haven't. To make matters worse, it is reported that the reaction of the police to the angry United fans getting crushed and trying to climb the fence to safety, was to fire of tear gas at them!

As for the game, one Lille goal was controversially disallowed and one United goal was equally controversially allowed.

The disallowed goal was a big, but correct, decision by the Ref. Had the Lille forward (Odemwingie) not pushed the United defender (Vidic), he may not have been able to attack the ball and score. And there was definite contact.

The Giggs free kick was taken too quick for Lille's liking - but the Ref allowed it. Take a look at the clip from behind the ball. As the Ref walks away (and as David Pleat said as a pundit on ITV - "once the Ref backs off, the ball is in play"), you can clearly see a conversation between the Ref and Giggs - and it is at that point that the Ref appears to nod at him. So Giggs takes the free kick while Lille were still building their wall. It is the fault of Lille to firstly, give away a free-kick in a dangerous position and secondly, be unaware of the quick one.

And their reaction to this - Lille walk off. Pretty childish I think! The Lille coach that ordered the players off should be removed from football full stop and Lille should be penalised heavily (not necessarily thrown out of the competition). It was this coaches actions that was done to intimidate the Ref and subsequently cause the Lille fans to start throwing missiles at the United players. Really, we don't want to see this type of behaviour.

As for Southend loosing - well at least most of the others around them failed to capitalise. But well done QPR, at least you got one point. It was Leeds that needed the three.

Well, the 0-0 draw between Milan and Celtic means good news for Milan since it was their 'away' match. Austrian television is the worst thing to have happened to me since the IB because they only showed the game Real against Bayern. Luckily this was a goal-filled game, so it was at least mildly interesting. Beckham proved that he is one of the best players in the world, not for his dribbling, but for his free-kicks and corners. He was really into the game and was running around tackling (and being tackled), and really made a difference to the game. Roberto Carlos did a great job of defending, but Cannavaro didn't feature practically at all. The Bayern side was weak and not very creative until the second half when they panicked and played more aggresively. The goal from van Bommel was a good one, but his gestures after it were highly inappropriate and rude. This should make for an interesting match in Munich, but based on both teams performances yesterday, I hope Real win.

P.S. Barcelona v.s. Liverpool today. Guess which one I'm rooting for.  :P

Liverpool? ;)

Seriously, I actually fancy Liverpool to win this tie.

Barcelona were said to have a split dressing room last week. Then comes the news that Craig Bellamy attacked his team-mate with a golf club.  So neither team has really had the best preparation to this tie; could go either way.

On the QPR game last night: 0-0 was a fair result, and a pretty satisfying one for a Rangers fan. Leeds had their biggest crowd of the season after they halved their ticket prices for the game (cue chants of Cheaper Seats....That's Why You're Here  :D ), but we took a decent amount of fans, about 800 or so, especially considering we lost our last away game 5-0 and two seasons ago's game at Elland Road we lost 6-1. One point closer to safety; it should be an exciting end to the season.

We'll see about that.  -_-

It's not that often I get these wrong - but it still has the second leg to be played and with Liverpool at home already 2-1 up, you have to fancy them. ;)

And it's slightly ironic that it is he (Bellamy) who gets the equalizer (not winner ;)).

Ah, you were right Albie. After this 2-1 away win for Liverpool it looks good for 'em. Unfortunately I did not see the game (evil Austrian TV), but judging from the score Liverpool were the better team in this match. Let the best one win in any case.

The "did the ball cross the line?" argument could be banished for good. I like the bit about it having to be 100% accurate - well, we don't want something that is no better than a linesman's/refs eye. :D

As for the games today - (that matter - after all, the Premiership is pretty much sewn up. If Man U don't win it, they should shoot themselves) - only Southend managed a point today from all the teams in the bottom 6 of the Championship, just a shame they didn't get all three. But time is running out for them and they need to capitilise more in scenarios like today.

This is good news. I've heard about the development of a microchip inside the ball, and that coupled with this new 'outside' technology (by that I mean outside the ball) should make it much easier for referees to make a decision. Plus, it'll put an end, like you said Albie, to the whole 'did the ball cross the line?' argument.

On other news, Tuesday and Wednesday mark important days on my schedule. I root for Barca and Real, but neither of the two games will be easy ones (with Barca pumped because they have to win by more than two points, its looking good for an excellent game).

Well, congratulations to Liverpool for yesterdays game. Although it was 1-0 for Barca, Liverpool was the better team, never giving Ronaldinho (or anyone else) a chance to shoot. Astonishingly Liverpool also had some very nice attempts on goal but hit the post twice. Every time Liverpool had the ball they used it well and made some very nice moves. I'm happy for Liverpool because Barcelona playing like they did last night certainly did not deserve to continue to the next round.

P.S. Actually, I'm so impressed by Liverpool's performance that I'm hoping they'll make it through to the finals.  :)

I saw some of the highlights last night - it looked quite a good game. Liverpool have a good chance of winning the competition (they have a history of doing well in Europe), if someone knocks Man U out again. ;)

Chelsea to beat Porto
Milan to beat Celtic
PSV to beat Arsenal (well, one can hope)
Man U to beat Lille
Lyon to beat Roma
Liverpool to beat Barca
Real to beat Bayern
Valencia to beat Inter
Two wrong. :(

The draw is interesting - all three English clubs kept apart so, all three could make the semis. And I fancy all three English clubs to do this as the draw has been kind for them. Keeping them away from Bayern and (boring) Milan. Chelsea v Valencia could be tight, though.

I fancy all English clubs to go through too, and I fancy any of them to win it over Bayern or Milan. Hopefully it won't be Chelsea though. ;)

For what it's worth, I'll go for Bayern to pip Milan to make the semis. So that would be:

Man U
Chelsea
Liverpool
Bayern

I'll not go for a winner just yet, but three of those four have won the competition in recent times. And all three seem to have the rub of the green - again. :D

Me, being Dutch, I'm very excited about PSV ! But now it will be difficult. Coach Ronald Koeman's view -->
---------
"It is a real disappointment," said Koeman.
"I do think that all clubs are tricky, but the fact is that we already had them in the group stage.
"You want to go somewhere else - any other club would have been nice."
Having said that, he went on to speak about his team's involvement in the competition, and Liverpool's provess.
"But we are glad that we are part of this stage of the tournament," he continued.
"Liverpool are tough because they play a defensive game, just like we do.
"They have a few fantastic players like Steven Gerrard.
"If you beat Barcelona 2-1 on their own turf you are a very strong team.
"It will be a hell of a job so it will be important to get a good result in our own stadium."

-------

I am 100% sure that the winner of the CL will be one of these teams:

Milan - Bayern
PSV - Liverpool

The others are really performing worse, lately.

Here my prophecies for the quarter finals:

Milan - Bayern  --> Winner: Bayern
PSV - Liverpool  --> Winner: PSV
Roma - Man. United --> Winner: Man. United
Chelsea - Valencia --> Winner: Chelsea

Wow: Ipswich away - a score draw at best I thought - but to get all three points :D

Results around Southend have gone OK, but Steve Tislon (Southend's Manager) reckons five wins from the remaining 9 games will keep them up. This would put Southend on at least 50 points and that is more than enough to stay up.

Do I remember down at Roots Hall back in 1992(ish) watching Southend beat Luton at the last game of the season to stay up - could this happen again?

I tell you what, although it's no good for any of our hearts, the relegation battle is a very exciting one this year. My  worry is that QPR might very possibly go down. Before today, we had 10 games left, 8 of which are against teams in the top ten; so I thought we really needed to win today against Sheffield Wednesday - only 1-1 at home.

Southend are looking more and more like they might stay up. And what do Leeds mean by winning a game?! I thought that stage of their history was over. Kind of on this note, I was very upset at Talksport's coverage of the games today. The main presenter, saying he was from Yorkshire and had a special fondness for leeds, basically said that Leeds deserve to stay in the division (NO! whoever doesn't win enough games deserves to go down) and was disappointed that the teams above them won. It really upset me when he said that Leeds' fans should not have to see their team get relegated. What about the fans of the other clubs down there? QPR finished 5th in the Premiership just over 10 years ago - we used to be good too! Same as the other clubs: it'll hurt them just as much to get relegated. Forget history, whoever finishes in the bottom three, it'll be because they deserve to.
