Official Football Thread

If you're refering to an international tournament like EuroCup or the World Cup, I figured his tears during the last game verus Portugal in Germany would have been apparent, in Beckham's mind, that his international career was over.  I think the announcers were speculating the same thing.  Regardless, his well-timed, beautifully curved free kicks will stun and amaze the American soccer (sorry  :)) fans.

As I'm not a fan of Beckham I do not mourn the 'loss' of him in European football. Still, I suppose he'll help the image of soccer in the States (where they play so...umm...mediocre (for want of a better word) that Beckham's playing will be viewed as Gospel). No offense anyone from the US, but thats one sport where you really need to improve.

The dark side of football rears its ugly head, once again. This sort of thing is a real shame, but even though it's almost under control in the grounds across the UK (a place that was rife with hooligans), lessons still need to be learnt to eliminate it totally.

Today sees the start of the 6 Nations rugby tournament and here is a sport that allows multitudes of people from all backgrounds to congregate in one place with almost no trouble what so ever - even with the fact that alcohol is readily available in the grounds and the fans are not segregated. Can football learn from this? Possibly not because the scum that seem to be hellbent on violence and lack any sort of care for others (I would also say education, but at times the orchestration of some thuggery is done with almost military precision), use football as a vehicle to perform their mindless acts.

That must have been pretty bad if we heard of it even in Canada.  Football news usually does not reach here as much.  I was surprised to learn they continued the game after the break.  But, if they stopped chances were the hooligans would have started shit up anyway.

This Friday sees two Titans of the Championship clash in what has been billed 'The [Most Important] Game of the Season' by many experts. Yes, it's Southend versus Queens Park Rangers.

Well anyway, it's important for me and Albie. :D The race for staying in the division is pretty hot at the moment. I always thought that Leeds must come good at some point and they seem to be improving at least (hopefully they won't, but I think they might put a good run together). Southend have also been picking up a few points here and there. QPR meanwhile have been doing awful recently, until last Saturday when we got a briilant 3-1 result against Burnley. I put it down to a couple of experienced signings in the transfer window.

Anyway, should be a good game, and it's on Sky Sports. Of course, Sod's Law says that I must miss it because I've promised to go out for a friend's birthday.

Looking forward to it, Albie?

To coin a well used footie phrase - it's a classic 6 pointer. I have to admit the form of Southend has been quite good of late, especially away (Birmingham and Cardiff can be testament to that). One minute they were 6 points adrift, now their second from bottom. But I must say, Leeds do look doomed, but by them beating Hull the other day has sucked another team down for the Shrimpers to catch up with. :D

But I am looking forward to the game and if they keep this form up....

Fancy a prediction?

Dare I? We had one of these famous 'six-pointers' last week against Barnsley and lost 2-0. I think if either team loses, it will have a massive demoralising effect on them, let alone the three points lost.

I tend to stay away from predictions, just like I will never bet on QPR, but maybe I'll go for a 2-1 win for the R's (well I had to :D). Watch out for Lee Cook - without bias, one of the best players in the division - it's the other ten that let us down.:D

Mexico Vs. USA friendly today!!! I've got my jersey on... and that's about it. the game starts at 6 in phoenix, but since I'm a wage slave I'll have to catch the televised replay at 8 :(

Of all the results that could have happened, I did not expect that one - 5-0? Maybe Roycey still thought he was a Shrimper. ;)

From Southend's point of view, they have been in good form of late and if this continues, I can see them staying up. As for QPR, well they have small cushion to keep them away from immediate danger, so perhaps they could survive also - but I think it could be the three Yorkshire sides that drop. Then again, I'm not going to call it. :D

I am in shock.

What is happening to my club? Some people say, well it's never boring, well I'd rather it was boring and we'd win some games.

being born in West London my team are always winning :) i think we can get past Porto in the campions league with relative ease as long as we dont dally on the ball and keep passing back, and i hope we can catch united at the top of the table. :)

With 12 games remaining, 6 points short and Man U in their current form, that is a tall order even for Chelsea. I know they play each other at Stamford Bridge, but we can't bank on Chelsea winning.

Albie, did you watch the match yesterday? Was it as one-sided as the score suggests?

It's funny what you said about Royce, because leading up to the game I read some words of his where he said that he was desperate to beat his old club, regardless of the importance of 3 points.

Anyway, I am still in shock. I can't face being relegated again.

PS well done Southend, I hope you stay up, just not at the expense of QPR. ;)

I didn't see the game (don't have Sky), but I was keeping my eye on a couple of Internet pages that had live text commentary. The BBC one suggested that (towards the end of the first half) QPR had around 68% possession!

I think privately, well both wish the drop on the three Yorkshire sides (or even Luton). ;)

I was watching Sky Sports News yesterday, and the presenter seemed to find this story hilarious. He asked viewers to send in captions/headlines, and the one he came up with was Hallowed Be Thy Plane. ::)

Could have been Aces High - but Rangers aren't exactly ace this season.

EDIT: And to prove it all, they loose - Hapoel Tel-Aviv 2-1 Rangers

Still, there is always the second leg (in the second rate Euro club competition).

I'm off to Leeds tonight for the QPR game there. Another 6-pointer - we've lost three "6-pointers" in the last month, so I'm not expecting too favourable a result. I'll just get tanked up before the game, hope it might numb the pain a bit. ;)

I trust you'll be cheering for us tonight Albie; (I'll be cheering Palace though) :D

It is essential for Southends survival that QPR beat Leeds and Southend beat Palace - so yes, come on QPR.

Oh, and let's hope that Barnsley and Hull fight out a dreary 0-0.

Who else is psyched about the champions league first knockout round today, AC Milan vs. Celtic? Well, I am. I predict that AC Milan will win, although it could be close. Fingers crossed, very excited.

P.S. Bayern are to play Madrid today as well, right? But about that I am not psyched, as I dislike both teams.
