NOW WATCHING

American History X blows Fight Club out of the water. It's one of the best movies I've ever seen, if not *the* best. Norton stole the show and really deserved the Academy Award in it - I can't comprehend why he didn't win.

I saw Le petit baigneur three days ago, a french movie with the best french actor : Louis de Funes.
This one is totaly stupid but there are some good scenes...

This movie is pretty damn good ! Robin Willians is perfect in almost every movie he does.

Saturday I saw The Village: Its an interesting movie and I like the photography also. And yes, it could have been a little longer and more reflexive.

Show me a low budget sequel that doesn't suck then. I agree that good films can be made on a low budget (although I wouldn't actually classify BW as a good film), but sequels in general suck (with a few exceptions of course), a low budget one is just like rubbing one's face in it.
You're almost sure to have none of the original thoughts and ideas of an original (and you need TONS of good ideas when you don't have expensive props and effects), just a replica of the original with a plot twist.
In the case of Starship Troopers 2, they made it into an aliens copy, all set on a base on mars (or whereever) instead of battling through different areas like in the first movie.

Oh, and I thought BW2 was better than the original in the american teen-screamer way [!--emo&^_^--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/happy.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'happy.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

PS. it might seem like I think props and effects make or break a movie, which is most certainly not the case. Some of the movies I enjoyed most were made on a low budget. I'm a huge fan of the B-movie genre (The Evil Dead series comes to mind)

I saw Heathers this last week end. It is a 1989 comedy about the usual highschool clicks starry Christian Slater and Wynnona Ryder. The 'cool' group of girls are called Heathers because they all have that first name. Wynnona Ryder and the new kid (Slater) kill the head heather and accidently kill (they wanted to stun them) two jocks from the football team. They make all deaths appear like suicides and well... they create a monster of a situation! Really funny.
Cube was an AMAZING movie, Canada's finest [!--emo&:D--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/biggrin.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'biggrin.gif\' /][!--endemo--]. I've HEARD, Cube 2: Hypercube SUCKS, but I want to watch it anyway. I agree with Red Dragon, I just happen to see Manhunter today and it is good enough (for being an 80's flick) but the remake was done to have Anthony Hopkins as Lecter in all three films... no other reason.... oh and to make money off his name and Norton's

I just watched Hellboy. A decent action/superhero flick with a lovestory crammed down its throat - and it's damned near 2 hours long! The effects are quite nice. Worth a watch if you ask me. Still, I'd rent it and not buy it...

Aah, Hellboy... I WANT THOSE TWO HOURS OF MY LIFE BACK!!!!! I saw it for free and it was still a waste....( I nearly fell asleep)

It wasn't that bad... As long as you switch your brains off and go with it [!--emo&:)--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/smile.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'smile.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Ok , I have to type this now even though it's 11:40 pm because I can't sleep. I just saw The Eye, a 2002 Chinese/Thai (not sure which) movie. The Spoken languages on the DVD were Cantonese (which I think is spoken in Southern China) and Thai with English Subtitles. It is the story of this girl who became blind at age two and now at age 20-something she recieved a cornea transplant and she can see again. However with her new eyes (corneas, whatever) she begins to see ghosts and mysterious men in black who take the souls of the recently deceased to the underworld. Even though the storyline is very Sixth Sense/Stirr of Echoes it is worth watching. Even though the Movie isn't THAT scary the suspense lingers well after the movie TRUST ME!
It turns out she sees the ghost because the person who was the donner of the corneas had that ability. That to me makes no sense what-so-ever because if the corneas are to blame for the sight then it is something scientific, but seeing ghosts and spirits is Supernatural/paranormal and I consider it a major flaw of the film. What was interesting was the Eastern take on Death and the Paranormal, much like "The Ring" 's view ( the eastern view) of Evil... it simple can't be stop (unlike the western view say... The Exorcist). Good movie though.. I just might have nightmares [!--emo&:D--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/biggrin.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'biggrin.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

I saw that one a while ago. Pretty good and a bit scary. I tend to let them get away with such scientifical flaws as long as it helps the story - in this case it more or less IS the story...

Oh, and the 'real' reason why I posted - Cantonese is spoken in Hong Kong and more or less only there. The rest of China speaks mandarin. Cantonese is the original language for many of the best movies made in Asia - especially kung fu flicks. Jet Li, for example, is from Hong Kong. If you're new to Kung Fu and want some newer stuff, anything wih Jet Li is a sure winner.
I seem to have wandered off. [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/blink.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'blink.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

PS. I have my name tatooed in Cantonese on my forearm [!--emo&^_^--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/happy.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'happy.gif\' /][!--endemo--]

I saw the school of rock a couple of days ago, and im going to see shrek 2 today in the theater....
School of rock was pretty good, but could have been much better. Still in some parts it was funny as hell!! [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/lol[1].gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'lol[1].gif\' /][!--endemo--]

Well, you guys won't believe what I just saw... A soft porn miniseries... with my girlfriend. hahahaha. We're in the living room watching Bruce Allmighty, which I had already seen and of course it is very funny, and it ends, credits rolling blah blah blah. We are just there talking and BAM, the next movie is this soft porn series and we just sat there watching. It was funny because my girlfriend would just burst out laughing at the ridiculous lines and unrealistic situations, so it was quite fun. hehehehe [!--emo&:D--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/biggrin.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'biggrin.gif\' /][!--endemo--] I don't remember the name of the series but apperantly it is every Saturday at midnight on Cinemax if you guys are curious!

Ah yes, Cinemax soft porn. I remember that fondly, though I haven't had Cinemax in years. Back in the late 80's, they used to air the soft-porn "Cinderella" from which the band Cinderella took their name.

What I've seen lately:

The Exorcist III - Great movie! It's really a combination of a murder mystery along with the demonic posession story. George C. Scott plays a detective, Lt. Bill Kinderman (played by Lee Cobb in the original Exorcist) and is great in the part. The connection to the first movie only becomes completely clear halfway through ... and I won't say what it is here, because that would spoil the plot. But if you're into horror and haven't seen this, rent it pronto.

Mystic River - Amazing. I completely understand why it got so many Oscar nominations. Sean Penn and Tim Robbins both completely deserved their acting Oscars. I also think the screenplay was great and can't believe it didn't win - though to be fair, I haven't seen the winner (Lost In Translation) yet. Another movie I highly recommend for fans of murder mysteries.

Exorcist III is a very good movie, and for those who don't know, the "Official" Sequal to The Exorcist. Exorcist two was made by the Studio to cash in on the the originals popularity, William Peter Blatty, the author of the book and screen play for the first, was so disgusted he wrote a sequal. The book is titled Legion, after a passage in Mathew where Jesus Speaks so a supposedly possed man and he says "What is your name" and the man replies "We are Legion" refereing to many demons possesing him, not just one. The Movie was adapted and titled Exorcist III. Unfortunately Legion is out of print and I haven't been able to find it in a used books store.
Mystic River was great, but i was very surprised. It is based on Denise Lehane's book, and what surprised me is that the other books I read from him are rather comical. He knows how to balance seriousness and humor very well, but Mystic River is flat out dark all the way through. I Recommend "Gone, Baby Gone" a good read.

I saw Supersize Me the other day. Interesting film. I always knew McD's wasn't good for you, but this film really put things in perspective - the guy gains 8kgs in 12 days!!
I saw one really controversial point in the film: It's ok to harass a smoker when he/she smokes, but it's not ok to tell fat people to stop binging. Discuss. (perhaps in another thread?)

I saw Resident Evil 2 last weeks and.... it SUCK. How can someone adapt a great horror game in to an action movie...... [!--emo&--][img src=\'style_emoticons/[#EMO_DIR#]/mad.gif\' border=\'0\' style=\'vertical-align:middle\' alt=\'mad.gif\' /][!--endemo--] and last night I saw Sky Captain and the World of Tomorow. It was ok but you should wait until it is released in video.

I saw The Girl Next Door yesterday. Really Good movie. Very funny and very smart IMO. I liked Serendipidy, I like John Cusak's movies hehe.
