NOW WATCHING

I only saw the first one and it was OK. Cried is too harsh, his description is making it sound worse than Sharknado :P

Stop after that one.

Well, I was actually planning to watch all three Hobbit movies, followed by the three LOTR movies. I haven't seen any of the Hobbit movies since I saw them in the cinema, and the LOTR movies only like one time since. So it's almost like watching them anew.

Anyways, they're great entertaining fantasy movies with a good story and great visuals, I'm not gonna look for anything more in them :)

Out of interest, do any of you subscribe to Amazon Prime? I've been subscribed to Netflix for a couple of years, but it's a waste of money, there's rarely anything I want to watch on there.

I subscribe to both, there is a fair amount of overlap, but Prime does have some good original shows as well as a ton of HBO shows, it helps that I order a ton of stuff from Amazon, so the free 2-day shipping/Sunday delivery is nice, plus the music service is pretty solid.

I have just watched Micheal Haneke's The Seventh Continent. It just seems like a 'boring' social realist film until the last 15-20 minutes which show how social isolation and mundanity in a modern day commercial and monetary obsessed western society can really drive somebody mad if they can't even find happiness in everyday life

I forgot that Ash vs. Evil Dead started. Giving the first episode a watch. Big fan of the original Evil Dead movies and Army of Darkness. I hope this new series holds up.

OK, just finished the first episode of Ash vs. Evil Dead. As expected - lots of slapstick comedy, one-liners and over the top action scenes with plenty of gore :D People can watch this show without much prior knowledge to the original Evil Dead franchise and fans of the old movies will have fun seeing familiar props, scenes, sights and sounds of the old movies reappear and get new life in this series.

Some of the horror scenes can be creepy but they do lack the story building to be truly harrowing - The comedy and the action is definitely the main focus. Good entertainment though if you liked Army of Darkness, which this is pretty much a continuation from, just that they upped the humor and the action even more!

Going to see Macbeth tomorrow. It isn't a film that's really stood out for me, but I really want to try out the new boutique cinema in town. I've booked a sofa. I need to check if they're taking bookings for the new Star Wars film, too.

I saw the new Macbeth film today. It's a British production, so I'm not sure how far around the world it's being screened. Stars Michael Fassbender in the title role, and was first shown at Cannes earlier this year.

I thought they made a pretty good job of this, presenting it more in the style of a film, complete with flashbacks and changes of scene even mid-dialogue, rather than as set piece play scenes. Typical of British films, they haven't tried to inject fast action, it relies very much on scene-setting atmosphere, sets, landscape and music. There's an awful lot of fog, fires, howling wind, rain, sweeping shots of heathland and snow-capped mountain scenery, and slow motion segments. Not the most cheerful of films, but hey, it is Macbeth!

I was happy to see they featured Bamburgh Castle in Northumberland, set on a rocky outcrop overlooking miles of sand dunes and beaches, really dramatic landscape. Location shoots were also filmed inside Ely Cathedral and on Skye.

Fassbender sticks to his usual deadpan routine until Macbeth starts seeing ghosts (actors, not effects) and acting erratically, then his acting skills come out a lot more. The murders and battles are really quite bloody, hence the film getting a 15 certificate. They manage a good historical feel to the film, even if some aspects come across as unlikely. A lot of the filming, outdoors, in the king's tent and even indoors, is done with shaky camera. I think the intention is to show everything is being buffeted in the wind, but that gets a bit tired after a while.

Pretty much everyone either has or attempts Scottish accents. Lady Macbeth (played by French actress Marion Cotillard) sounds English....just to make her extra evil, I guess.

I wonder if it's more bloody and gritty than Polanski's version of Macbeth from 1971. That's the only one I've seen. Loved it though!

Just finished Eastwood's Mystic River (2003) with my wife. A very cool movie, IMO even better than the other Lehane movie we've had this week - Gone Baby Gone (2007).

And I finally watched There Will Be Blood today. What an excellent piece of filmmaking. Check it out, if you appreciate masterful craftsmanship in cinema.
