I’ve always had the impression that Seasons in the Abyss is Slayer’s Black Album—but without even a hint of negative connotation. It’s definitely in my top two favorite Slayer records.
Maybe it’s a bit toned down, adapted for a wider range of listeners, very accessible and pleasant to listen to (ha), and nicely produced. What’s not to like?

Chaos A.D. is Sepultura’s Black Album. It’s definitely a bit toned down, adapted for a wider range of listeners, nicely produced, and very pleasant to listen to. At the same time, it retains a rebellious, even punkish energy in some songs.
Countless nights in the ’90s were spent in a darkened room, rocking out to tracks from this album and playing on a fake, cobbled-together guitar. (Very rewarding material for that attitude-driven pseudo-performance act, ha ha.)
Refuse/Resist, Territory, Slave New World, Propaganda, Manifest, The Hunt. Huh!

I think with this album they were on the way to becoming a very, very big band. But then Roots came out, which I found very disappointing, and later both Cavaleras left—and soon Sepultura became one of those bands whose full potential was never fulfilled…
