NOW PLAYING

Eh, as far as I can tell Janick has about 5-6 distinct musical ideas that he keeps recycling with minor variations in everything he composes. Some of them are very good ideas, but by the time you've heard the same touchstones in 3 or more different Maiden songs on consecutive albums it gets a little exhausting.

So true and most of those ideas were showcased with White Spirit!

He can write some great stuff with them, albeit repetitive.

The 3 similar acoustic intros in a row could have been avoided, but I think Janick always has interesting musical ideas. That's more important imo. And it's not like the others aren't repeating (with some variations) ideas. It's inevitable. He also writes some parts of the music with Steve.

Big disagree.

It’s not just the acoustic intros, though those are part of the problem. There’s “the clean thing” (“Son Of A Gun”, “Wasting Love”), “the acoustic thing” (“The Legacy”, “The Talisman”, “The Book Of Souls”, “The Time Machine”), “the tapping thing” (“Lord Of The Flies”, “Gates Of Tomorrow”), “the prancy Celtic thing” (“Dance Of Death” and others), etc.

If I were motivated I could listen to everything again and catalog them all, and maybe it would add up to 7 or 8 ideas instead of 5 or 6, but his bag of tricks is very shallow on the whole.

Also keep in mind that Janick has repeatedly said he brings an hour’s worth of song ideas into every album writing session and they only wind up picking a couple of his songs each time. Given how derivative the selected songs often are, I can only imagine how much worse the leftovers must be when it comes to recycling.
