Now Playing (Video Games)

Oh man, oh man! Christmas came early! So I already related my upsetting experience of getting hacked, getting Alan Wake 2 "refunded" and unable to play it. So I check my wish list and BAM, it's 50% off! I use a gift card with my reward points and BAM another 5 bucks off! Between my purchase last June and this one I've basically paid full price for the game, but well worth it. I can now continue my journey, "Show me the Champion of Light!"

Also Vampire Survivors got updated and noticed their was a new DLC.... OMG it is freaking epic! It's a tribute to Castlevania, which is weird, because basically the whole game is, BUT this has actual Castlevania characters! here's the trailer:

EDIT: Sea of Stars also announced a new DLC for next year!

Update on the Celeste situation:

Chapter 9 is EZ! No, it's plain demonic. Most of the screens were tougher than the worst ones in the rest of the game, and there are A HUNDRED of them. I actually got to the final screen like a month ago lol. Took a break because this game is bad for my wrists :P. So I only completed it 2 days ago, and I sat now for 40 minutes to get the secret moon berry. In other news, Hades is a damn great game.

Got Star Wars Outlaws on sale after waiting a few months due to all the reported bugs. Having fun with it so far; I really like that it’s a “scoundrel” type of game without lightsabers as I’ve wanted a SW game like that for a while. I’m still on the first open world planet but I can’t wait to get to Tatooine.

Side Note: I can’t believe my iPhone just autocorrected “Tattooine” and considers it an actual word. Lol.

I also got a PS5 at the end of last month and am on my fourth run of the Silent Hill 2 remake. Outstanding game with fantastic atmosphere!

I also started FFVII Remake (not Rebirth) having never played the original, but since I play in a video game music band and I wrote an 8-minute medley of some tunes from this game that we play live, I felt I had to experience it. It’s fun so far (I’m at the second hub area) but nothing ground breaking.

For shits and giggles I decided to play Close to the Sun, a game in my backlog and on Game Pass. I LOVE this game. It's like they asked the question, What if Bioshock was a walking sim? The atmosphere is great, you can only run from danger, the story is interesting and each level gets increasingly larger in scope. I'm about halfway through. You're a reporter who gets a letter from your sister asking you to come to the Helios to help her out.

The Helios is a MASSIVE ship where all the top notch scientists gather to run their experiments (a la Rapture/Columbia). Our main antagonist is Tesla, who like Andrew Ryan talks to you over the ship's speakers and tries to quarantine you. Another person in your communicator is Aubry, some guy "stuck" somewhere on the ship (can't remember where), but somehow is able to help you unlocking doors, turning on lights and the like. Much like Atlas helps/guides you in Bioshock. You eventually hear from your sister and you do get to meet up with her eventually. Apparently, one of the experiments opened a tear in the space time continuum and some... things made their way into our timeline and have been wreaking havoc, they kinda look like the creatures from Prey (2017).
I’ll have to check this out, being a fan of BioShock and a massive fan of Prey (2017).

Finished Control - it was nice game with boring enemies but I like this type of stories and I'm big fan of SCP universe so it was nice. Now playing Alan Wake 2 and Assasins Creed Valhalla. - Alan Wake is something else, didn't expect that I will like it so much. Thank gods there is storyline mode and option to turn off some elements - I like to enjoy story more than fights in this kind of games.

Also finished Call of Duty Black Ops 6 campaign. It was ok - some elements didn't fit for me, some were great. Overall - I think that Modern Warfare (1 - 3) were better.
I agree about Control; the experience is great but the enemies are underwhelming. It really could’ve used some big monster-type things.

I really enjoyed Alan Wake 2, especially the more “realistic” Saga bits. Haven’t had a chance to play the second DLC yet, though.

AC Valhalla is something I thought I’d end up liking more than I did, being a big fan of Viking history and mythology. However, there’s not a lot of variety in the game, leading to a lot of repetition. I definitely preferred Origins and especially Odyssey. Are you looking forward to Shadows?

As for Call of Duty, I only play the single player content, so I wait a few years until each game is cheaper. MW2 (reboot) was ok, but I liked Cold War quite a bit. How does BO6 compare to the latter?

Half Life 2 - since it is 20th anniversary of release. I love this game series so it will be great to go back to this games (oh, and tomorrow Black Mesa Blue Shift mod will be released so it is also great).
Do you know if the 20th anniversary release is on consoles, too? I’ve been watching the documentary and I’m quite excited for the commentary nodes in the main game, as I loved that extra stuff in the episodes.

I really hope Black Mesa comes to consoles at some point, because I love it but my PC will barely run it (once Zen starts it’s practically a toaster).

Finished up The Expanse. Apparently I didn’t get the bonus “Archangel” episode as part of the season pass, and they want an extra $6 for that, so no thanks.

Overall it was very true to the fiction, using correct Belter slang, as well as music, voice actors, and their likenesses from the TV show. The game engine was a noticeable step up from the old Telltale games, but essentially doing the same basic things, just in proper 3D with nicer effects. As a narrative adventure the game is mostly salvage missions, chatting with other characters, decisionmaking, and occasional action sequences. If you like Telltale games in general and you like The Expanse, you’ll like this. If you’re not into The Expanse then this would be a harder sell because of all the Belter slang and the various Easter eggs you’d miss.

So, thumbs up for fans. I enjoyed it, and would probably play through again for different outcomes if it weren’t for the depth of my backlog.

BO6 is very similar to Cold War in my opinion, although I expected more from the plot. The missions themselves are interesting. Overall, being a CoD fan, I would rate it 7-8/10.

I'm not waiting for Shadows after what I've seen in the media. Valhalla seemed interesting to me (and still is) but I guess this style of game is not for me. Orlog was/is the best part of the game and I think I'll buy a board game :-)

I'm currently playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R 2 - quite a good game with a lot of bugs that interfere with immersion a bit. However, as a simulator of backpacking around the zone and combat it's really good. I'm waiting for a balancing path though.

Are you playing it on console or PC?

Once I finish up with Octopath Traveler 2 and Close to the Sun, I want to move on to Doom 3, Doom Eternal, Mass Effect, Hellblade 2 and Stalker 2 (as far as game pass goes). Might even give Starfield a shot.

As for games I own, gotta circle back to my Castlevania games (All of them), Alan Wake 2, Blasphemous 2 and a bunch of smaller indie games like In Sound Mind and Killer Frequency among a plethora of others.

I’ve been very excited for this game, but I’m going to wait a bit until the bugs are patched. I give the developers a ton of credit for making a game of this scope during an actual war, though; I heard that none of the buildings were procedurally generated. Pumped to play it!

On PC :)

@Detective Beauregard yeah, I was also very excited and I must say that game is exactly what I want. There are some things that could work different but hey, that's why we have mods & updates.

Started playing Jusant, which is a neat rock climbing adventure game in a post-apocalyptic world.

At first your goals aren’t clear, other than generally where you’re headed, but things slowly get revealed as you go. It’s pretty chill, and I really like how they give you more freedom to plant pitons and rappel and swing on the rope to get to new places, as most rock climbing in modern games involves a single or barely branching path with an obnoxious amount of visual signposting about where your legal handholds are, and this game just doesn’t do that — instead it gives you tools and lets you loose to figure things out more or less on your own.

I’ve only completed the first chapter so far, but I’m digging it, and this seems like a good candidate for playing on the PS Portal, too. I only paid $15 for it, and it already seems like it will be well worth that amount.

Finished up a first pass through Jusant, which is all my backlog is going to allow me to do. It was a relatively short game with only 6 chapters, but mechanics continued to be added throughout, and it was still a very good value at $15.

I missed a bunch of collectible stuff my first time through that I probably would have gone back and gotten if I had more time to spare, and the game shows you how many things you’re missing and lets you do a chapter select after you finish the game to encourage some replay, which is nice.

Not sure what my next chill/puzzle game will be — maybe Viewfinder.

I finished the main game of both Octopath Traveler games. The both have a final mission for the "true" ending, but honestly, the grinding I would have to do to be at a decent level to beat the final bosses is just insane. So.... I'm good with how far I got. Maybe when I have absolutely nothing to do I'll retake that tedious journey.

I've gone back to Alan Wake II. before my hacking fiasco, I was stuck on "We Sing," the AMAZING musical number which literally made my jaw drop. I was in such awe of it that I was killed as soon after the first Taken came out. That specific sequence made me think, "Now THIS is a next gen game!" I'm loving every second of it.

But yeah, I was stuck on that sequence for DAYS, gave up, got hacked, got "refunded", bought it again, and finally back at it. I passed the section I was stuck in on my second try back (getting reacquainted with the controls). I'm currently at the theater investigating the dirty cops murder.

Aside from that using Vampire Survivors as a relaxing time killer and my brother and I are almost done with your NHL18 Stanley Cup Playoffs. We modeled it after the last years teams, so his favorite team, Pittsburgh, wasn't in it, but my Boston Bruins were. His favorite and strongest team in the West, Nashville, made it to the conference finals against another one of his teams (he one both semi-final series) Winnipeg. I won both East semi-finals so my Bruins and the New York Islanders made it through. We both said the same thing, "Looks like a Nashville-Boston Final." Welp.... it's looking like a Winnipeg-New York final as our "strong" teams are down 2-1 in a five game series.

Indiana Jones.

It's interesting game. I'm a little bit on the fence with my opinion about it - game has great music, graphic, story is interesting and voice acting is superb (Troy Baker as Indiana is g-r-e-a-t). But I don't like design decisions that they made.

First person with ocasional third person doesn't work very well in my mind. Fighting mechanics are chaotic and stealth is painful (i.e. to lean over cover you must hold 'aim' button [when holding right item] and then right or left stick). It's not 10/10 or 9/10 game but very strong 7-8/10. That is a little bit sad because with a little bit polished controls etc. it could be easy 10/10 for any Indiana Jones fan.

Just like STALKER 2, the Indy game is on my radar. I should finish with Alan Wake this weekend or so. Just got to the end of Alan's story at parliament plaza and automatically switched realities back to Saga. While there is a lot of freedom in which order to play the game or continuously switching back and forth, I think playing as Alan first and then as Saga makes better sense narratively.

I had the same experience with the first Octopath (never played the second). I felt like I grinded pretty hard and made my characters powerful to the point where the late game wasn't even challenging in any way, and then I got crushed by the final boss. Meh. I felt ok putting the game down at that point. Overall I really enjoyed the game though and will probably pick up the sequel at some point.

The sequel is definitely worth it. I loved everything about it.
