Non Album Maiden Songs - The Complete List

That Girl - Harris and Murray without a doubt, it's not just fret hitting, it's the timing, the release of notes, the fills and the overall style, these are Steve Harris generic patterns in there. Dave's solo tone and legato style can only be missed by deaf persons. Sure, it's not some big ass solo and Smith might've done these licks in Murray style with his rig setup, but why?

Juanita - first bass note and everything is clear. Again the Harris finger pluck. It's hard to say if Murray is playing here because there's no solo. The same goes for Reach Out.

There's also no moment in any of the tracks where you think "i've never heard that in a maiden bass line before"

Maiden (Nicko) themselves are the source. 1990, aeons before wikipedia and the internet. Did the biography also touch on it (I forgot)?

Yes, RTTH biography had something in the vain, but it is simply not correct. Both Harris and Murray are so audible on That Girl I'd put $1000 bet on it, any day.

It is entirely possible that three Hackney songs were arranged by Smith and McBrain who may have laid down the basic rhythm tracks alone. Harris adds the bass later, that's the off, the weird part for me, knowing how Maiden's rhythm section usually operates.

In any case - Steve laid bass track on all three songs, Murray laid down mid-track solo for That Girl, minimum. Does he play rhythm guitar or harmonies - it's not recognizable from the recording, at least for me.

Murray's solo for sure. I always thought this "refusal"-thing was only about Harris. It'd be a nice question to ask him, for the nerds among us at least.

I get your point, but it's not certain. Usenet was a very real thing in 1990, not only that it covered computer topics fully, it was also beginning to show the impact Internet will have on global things, the USSR coup d'etat in 1991 was the first major geopolitical event of this type. Somewhere, behind the remains of the Iron Curtain secret military stuff is happening and people all over the world know the details. That are the early days of the Internet we know today, it is entirely possible that in some newsgroup someone was discussing Maiden B-sides.

Mind you, in 1992 global newsgroup volume was already reaching 1 GB daily, some of us have used it in mid-late 1990, so for comparison 1997 had about 8GB of volume per day, but in early 1990s they didn't upload binaries and there was no spam, at all.

Actually Google news has all of this archived so it might be interesting to do some searches.

Songs might be AORish...but again, that is Harris playing there. What is your level of uncertainty there? I said mine is so low I'd bet on it.

Late to the party but That Girl won, cool, always liked that one. Reach Out is pretty good too and probably deserves #2. The choice to let Bruce do overdubs in the chorus was a great one.
