Non Album Maiden Songs - The Complete List

12. Rainbow's Gold
2 Minutes To Midnight B-Side
Overall: 6.54/10

Let's get it out of the way: Rainbow's Gold is one of the songs that Steve Harris allegedly stole lyrics from to create what would become arguably the greatest heavy metal song in history - Hallowed Be Thy Name. It's interesting, then, that they would go and cover this song and release it as a b-side. It's not Maiden's finest cover, in my opinion, but it is fairly popular here, given it's up at #12. And I mean, the band did introduce Beckett to a wider audience via this song, so I dunno. I don't particularly care and I don't think many others do either.

11. All In Your Mind
Holy Smoke B-Side
Overall: 6.54/10

All In Your Mind is a song by Stray that Maiden covered for the Holy Smoke single. And... it's our final song before the Top 10 begins. Just missed out! It's not perfect - Bruce's voice is showing signs of the shit he'd give us with the other '90s b-sides - but it's a fairly strong song overall. It actually ended up topping TeamRock's list of Top 10 Maiden Cover Songs. Maiden Fans disagree, but not by a whole lot. Stand-up song, and the next ones we'll see are the "best of the best" - if the voters are to be believed.

I thought the song they "borrowed" was Life's Shadow, although Rainbows Gold is on the same album by Beckett.

I always thought The Rainbows Gold B side was just as much a repayment for Hallowed as it was a “love to record this song.” Rod would do what it takes to protect the band.

10. King of Twilight
Aces High B-Side
Overall: 6.6/10

We're in the Top 10 now, guys! A song which I expected to be this high despite my own reservations. This Nektar cover has a great beginning but changes up midway through. It's a cover so I'm not gonna criticize it for that. I can see why people like this song even if it's not my kinda thing. Last song in the 6s range - the rest of the list is all 7s.

9. Juanita
Stranger In A Strange Land B-Side
Overall: 7.12/10

First song to get a 7 score here. Juanita is a pretty aggressive song, which is almost weird given it comes from the SIT session and that album and the other b-sides are much calmer, laid back, lush ones. It's a Marshall Fury song that the SIT tone really sounds great on. I think someone once mentioned that this is the first real instance of Bruce's rasp, which he was use sparingly on SSOASS and then use completely on Tattooed Millionaire, NPFTD, and FOTD. Overall, pretty cool song. Not as good as the two SIT songs to come (and I'll bet you can probably already guess where they're located, just about).

8. Cross-Eyed Mary
The Trooper B-Side
Overall: 7.22/10

Honestly, it's hard to envision a non-album songs Top 10 without Cross-Eyed Mary. Probably the band's single most famous b-side, and all because it happened to get featured on The Trooper single. This thing actually got radio airplay, apparently more so than The Trooper itself got. It's a great cover, but I think Bruce is over-singing on here. A couple times it sounds like he's straining. Popular or not, I suppose it's an important b-side for the band at any rate. I'm fine with where it landed.

7. Judgement Day
Man on the Edge B-Side
Overall: 7.26/10

Judgement Day is an up-beat, fast-paced song, and is a fun little jam from the TXF sessions. It's so cool, in fact, it's almost surprising that there are still three Blaze songs we've yet to see on this list. The albums get a lot of slack but the non-album tracks get a lot of love. Go figure! Not much I can say about this one except... it's an enjoyable experience. Go listen to it.

6. Justice of the Peace
Man on the Edge B-Side
Overall: 7.27/10

...and back-to-back with Judgement Day is the highest song from the Man on the Edge single, Justice of the Peace. MOTE had some impressive b-sides, all told. Justice is a longing for the good ol' days when people didn't kill each other every single day and everyone was a lot happier. Its message is more poignant now than it was back in '95, honestly. But forget the lyrics, every other part of this song is actually better. One of my personal favorites of the Blaze years. Glad it got this high.

Steve has already talked about this, if I'm not mistaken. I can't remember where I read it, but apparently Bruce wasn't present when they recorded the song. They had to keep sending him parts of the song for him to tell if it was in the right key for his voice. He thought it was, but, as it turned out, it was actually a tad too high.

Edit: found it! http://teamrock.com/feature/2015-10-08/the-prog-interview-steve-harris

5. Massacre
Can I Play With Madness B-Side
Overall: 7.35/10

Massacre was a brilliant cover version from Maiden.
A lot of people seem to agree with you. Into the Top 5 now with this Thin Lizzy cover, and yeah. It's brilliant. It has the whole Seventh Son vibe but you can tell it's a Lizzy song they're covering. Really don't know what else to say... it's great.

From the beginning I knew this song would end up pretty high on this list. And I was kinda worried about that because... it's never been my favorite cover despite the popularity it's received. Listening to it again, however... this is pretty good. I enjoy it. I can see why people like it and yeah. Not my personal favorite but I guess I'm okay with where it placed. Three songs left, and those three I have no qualms with whatsoever.

3. Virus
Single / Best of the Beast Track
Overall: 7.44/10

I love Virus. It's one of those Maiden songs, like The Legacy and such, whose message really I agree with whole-heartedly, and I find speaks to me personally. Written by the band in response to the lackluster reviews of The X Factor (IIRC) it was released as a single (the only one not featured on an album) and added to the Best of the Beast compilation. Releasing new songs on "best" compilations is a tricky thing, but there's no way this song doesn't fit in on it. It's a three-act Blaze gem: starts off quietly, explodes into a great verse/chorus x2, and then ends a little slower and... yeah. Brilliant, masterful, awesome song. Really underrated. I'm surprised it wasn't included in LC's list given there's a voting option for it in the voting boards, but whatever. It gets its due here at #3. And now of course you know what the Top 2 is... it's just a matter of which song won it out....
