Night Prowler's Top 25 Iron Maiden Songs

He said ROTAM is amazing (he gave it 10 points) but also said that he finds it overrated and didn't deserve to be in Top 3. (he was talking about Survivor) But maybe his opinion has changed since then.

So he gave it 10, but said it's overrated?

That kind of stuff can happen if the band we're talking about is Iron Maiden. So many great songs, so many masterpieces  :shred:

Indeed.
I was just reading a bit about how you guys gave ratings i.e. some people grading 1 as the worst Maiden track, and others regarding 1 as the worst for music generally (--& therefore never using this in the grading of Maiden songs.). Interesting. Not sure what method is best.

No prediction on the top 6 of a guys list that has Bring Your Daughter to the Slaughter in his  top 10!!!  Holy crap that isn't even a song!!! It's just music and Bruce being snarky!! hahahaha!!!  You have thrown this lifelong Maiden fan for a" losfer words!!"  This aught to be an interesting top o' the list!!  Can't wait!!

Bring Your Daughter was one of the first Iron Maiden songs I ever heard. Maybe that's the reason I like it so much.
Anyway, Top 6 is not controversial at all.

#6 - The Apparition

Just kidding :D

#6 - Caught Somewhere In Time
My second favorite song from the best album ever. That other song surpasses it just because this song isn't that good live, mainly because Bruce couldn't hit most of the high notes. Though I think that he's more focused lately, and that it would sound much better now. Anyway, this song has some of the best Iron Maiden melodies ever. Guitar synths in the beginning are perfect, and I don't even have to say how awesome the guitars are before the first verse starts. Chorus is fantastic, though Bruce sang it too high. Solos are amazing (second one is better). And of course, it's another song that would work great with 3 guitars...

#5 - Dance Of Death
First of all, I have no problem with "And I danced, and I pranced" line :D Another great song that Janick co-wrote. I just checked and his songs are my favorites on 4 albums (TXF, BNW, DOD and TFF). The whole song is filled with great folkish melodies. The only thing I don't like about this song are orchestrations that are totally unnecessary. Solos are perfect, though Janick's is the best. He always has nice solos, and I don't understand why he's too lazy to learn Adrian's solos :D Bruce is amazing on this song, and he's especially awesome on the acoustic parts of this song. In the end, I hope this song stays in future setlists. It's too good to be overlooked.

Dance the circle of death  :edmetal: :shred:
That aint on mine yet for a while

CSIT ive already placed high-mid table but still worthy of reaching up here... just not with me  ;)

It's something Janick isn't given much credit for. He writed these lovely folk acoustic guitar parts. Or, at least, I guess he's responsible --as Maiden never wrote anything like this before he joined.

Great picks !

Caught Somewhere in Time is also in my Top 10, Dance of Death is not that far behind.

Sorry for the delay, I forgot about this thread

#4 - Seventh Son Of A Seventh Son
Another underrated epic from the 80's. Starts in a very epic way with choirs. I can say that this is probably Maiden's most epic song. Bruce is amazing on this song - operatic, agressive and melodic. Nicko is on fire on this song which features some of his best fills. The best part of the song is IMO its third part (from 06:52 until the end) - fantastic solo trade off between H and Dave with great Nicko fills. I like the ending - repeating the chorus one more time would be unnecessary IMO.

#3 - Wasted Years
My favorite song from the best album ever, and for a long time my favorite Iron Maiden song. Of course, MVP of this song is Adrian Smith - his riffs and solo on this song are out of this world.  IMO this song should've been a staple in setlists - it always sounds great live - but I think that the band doesn't like SIT much :( My favorite live version of this song is on Flight 666 - nice move by Bruce to let Adrian to sing part of the chorus :ok:

Wasted Years is certainly a faultless masterpiece. I was so glad (and relieved) when they played it live in 08. At the Sydney gigs Adrian nailed the solo both nights, yet on Flight 666 a couple of notes are out of time. Still cool and H's vocals make it spellbindingly super. Nice choice.

I'm sure it sounds fantastic live, in person. But in all the live versions I've heard the verse doesn't sound as blended & smooth as the album version. No big deal, but I love the album version. Not sure if it would be in my top 3; maybe.

Btw, what's going on with the intro? To all those musicians & guitarists out there: how did they record this for the album? Is Adrian playing the open E as well as the step down part (--not that this is difficult, it just doesn't quite sound like it sometimes); or did they record this as two tracks? And, what do they do live? Lastly, there ain't nothing to nail about this solo. Seriously, Adrian plays some tricky stuff; but this solo isn't one of them.

Time to end this list:

#2 - The Trooper
Maiden's best short song. It sounds incredible live, and features all Maiden trademarks: galloping rhythm, guitar harmonies and operatic vocals. Dunno what else to say - that's why I rarely updated this thread :D I hope they never stop playing this song live.

#1 - Hallowed Be Thy Name
This is simply the best song ever. It sounds way better when played live - Beast Over Hammersmith version is the best. I won't go into details, but every single part of this song is simply spellbinding. Also, when I download a Maiden bootleg, I always check this song the first - first: how long Bruce sang the "running looooow" part; second: how fast he sang the lyrics. IMO this song and The Trooper should be played on every Maiden concert (and they mostly are :D).
