Night Prowler's Top 25 Iron Maiden Songs

I want to finish this before Tuesday, 'cause I won't be here for a few days starting from that day...so...

#14 - The Prisoner
Legendary intro and then a nice drum/guitar interplay in the beginning. Nicko never played this intro as good as Clive - either he played it too fast, or missed a pedal beat. The song keeps its fast pace throughout its entirety, and never fails to amaze. Chorus is one of Maiden's best. I don't expect they ever bring this song back to the setlist though... :(

#13 - Phantom Of The Opera
Best song from the debut album. I once saw a video interview with Kerry King and Marty Friedman where they played some random riffs, and when they played Phantom, they said that Maiden used to it play two times faster than the studio version, is that true? Anyway, early live versions of this song sound very fast, but unfortunately, they have Paul on vocals whom I never liked on this song. I prefer Live After Death version tbh. Hearing it live was an amazing experience, although I wish it was played a little bit faster.

#12 - Fear Of The Dark
Third best song from the 90's IMO. Yes, it's overplayed, but it's still awesome, and always sounds better live. I first heard Rock In Rio version of the song, and never got used to its studio version. I can say that there are no spectacular moments in the song, but that it relies more on its atmosphere and crowd interaction when played live. Here is an awesome version of the song recorded in March 2007 in Belgrade, where the intro was sang almost entirely by the audience :edmetal: I will never forgive my mother for not letting me go to that concert :( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hxGWcUaOV4

I do like FOTD, but isn't it a little overated? I just don't think it's that special. Or rather, it's become special just because it's pretty good live. No complaint there, but plenty of other Maiden songs just haven't had all the limelight FOTD has had. I think, in some imaginery world, where everyone had experienced every Maiden song live, FOTD would be well down the pecking order in comparison.

Well said! It's a theory of course, but I also do think that -in general- songs which have seen the stage have benefited from the extra limelight.

Indeed they do, sir. Imagine all the tracks which would climb the proverbial countdown lists, of respective fans, from the lowly position they currently occupy --climbing past poor old FOTD on their way. Some tracks are already up there, as people imagine how good they would sound live; perhaps attributing too high a position, since we don't know how some stuff would really sound. But undoubtedly there are many tracks that would be transformed by a live performance. FOTD really would flounder, I think.

#11 - Children Of The Damned
Another classic from The Number Of The Beast. Seen it live, it was awesome on so many levels - and I got to see H with double neck guitar :shred: (he plays it only on this song, I think). Starts with an amazing guitar solo, and Bruce gives one of his best performances - especially on the chorus. Chorus is kinda repetitive, but it's good, so no problems there :D Song then morphs into fast solo section with nice drum performance by Clive. Also, I really like the "ooooo" part near the end of the song, works great live.

#10 - Out Of The Silent Planet
My favorite song from Brave New World. It's strange that it was released as a single but played on only a few concerts, which is a shame 'cause it's much better than The Mercenary which was played regularly. This song features IMO Nicko's best bass pedal work on an Maiden album, and it almost sounds like double bass during the chorus. Chorus is catchy as hell, and would've worked great live with audience singing along.

#9 - Man On The Edge
My favorite Blaze era song, although I prefer the version with Bruce on vocals, 'cause I heard it first. Dunno if it was ever used as the opener but opening the show with that fantastic riff on the beginning of the song would be great. Lyrics are great, and perfectly tell the story from the film (Falling Down, great film). Dave's guitar solo also sounds much better on the live version.

#8 - The Talisman
My favorite song from The Final Frontier. As is the case with all songs on The Final Frontier, lyrics are fantastic. Intro is great, and Bruce sounds great on it (@Foro: and he's not trying to sound like an old man :D). Nicko once again gives a great performance, his bass pedal work especially kicks ass. Bruce sounds fantastic on the song, kinda repetitive, but still fantastic :edmetal: Unfortunately, I don't see this one staying on future setlists, 'cause it's hard for Bruce to sing it every night.

#7 - Bring Your Daughter To The Slaughter
Before I came to this forum, I never knew that this song is so hated in Iron Maiden community. Lyrics aren't great, but c'mon, having lyrics with strange/funny lyrics is good for a change. Bruce's rough vocals suit the song perfectly. Solo section is amazing, and the part from 2:49 to 3:41 is perfect for crowd interaction. They HAVE to bring this song back to the setlist (so that I can hear it live :D).

Want to make a prediction about Top 6.

Not in order :

Hallowed Be Thy Name
Starblind
Rime of the Ancient Mariner
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
The Trooper
Sign of the Cross.

Let's see

The three I got right will be, Hallowed Be Thy Name, The Trooper and Sign of the Cross or Seventh Son of a Seventh Son. Another prediction :D

@CriedWhenBrucieLeft : "Repeats the sentence Dityn DJ James said" and he said that he finds ROTAM overrated in the commentary section of this song. So probably you only got Hallowed right

Sorry, did Night Prowler say he thought ROTAM was overrated? Shit, that was a poor guess then. It really would have been mental if HBTN wasn't there, so I've got one right...

He said ROTAM is amazing (he gave it 10 points) but also said that he finds it overrated and didn't deserve to be in Top 3. (he was talking about Survivor) But maybe his opinion has changed since then.
