Nicko McBrain retires

Wow, gonna be strange seeing them next year now without Nicko.

I totally get his reasons for this but it has come as a bit of a surprise as I always imagined the band would bow out together, ie if one of them stops they all stop.

I can only imagine that as the run for your lives tour has already been booked it would have caused a lot of financial pain to cancel it so I’m fully expecting any new drummer will be filling in for this tour then the band will all stop. Steve and Bruce and Adrian will all carry on with their solo/side projects and that will be the end of Maiden.

Fitting way to go out after the 50th anniversary. Can’t see another tour after Run for your lives without Nicko nor another album without him.
They do say in the statement that he will continue to be involved with Maiden. My assumption would be some recording or the occasional guest appearance.

Who says they'll end after the 50th though? With a fresh, younger drummer behind the kit, the lifespan of the band could be extended by at least another 5 years.

I'm still in shocked. There's nothing much to say about Nicko, he is a legend and one of the best drummers ever. Period.

Now for me the debate should if the band should continue without him. Of course they will end the tour, but... Then?

I know this has to happen, this is the Life and most of the great bands from the 70s and 80s are dead, separated or retired, but is hard to get used to It.

I think they new replacement would be Joe Lazarus, but let's see.

Thank you Nicko for everything.

A great shame but age catches up with us all. Maiden being hyper professional will choose a good replacement.

Maybe Simon Dawson as Steve has played and recorded with him in Lion? I am sure there are other technical drummers who could do the job.

I think they will probably go for a British guy, as Steve thought that was important when Blaze came in, but beyond that who knows.

I am sad but also happy that Maiden can continue for a few more years
That's how I'm feeling about the whole thing.

I really believe if he hadn't had the stroke Nicko could've kept going. He was incredible in '22. His drumming was still fantastic the last two years, but definitely diminished and a bit tighter.

Sad statement from Nicko (I've just read it in my email box)...

My bet for his replacement is not Joe Lazarus but Linda McDonald from The Iron Maidens.

It could be a logical choice as The Iron Maidens is the oldest tribute band to Iron Maiden.

Linda knows all the Iron Maiden older tracks. The next tour is based only on the songs from the first 9 albums. That could match.
