In my opinion, all of these songs are overlooked by the band and it's fans. To me these tracks are epic, it really amazes me how "Invaders" is never mention or recognized, it's awesome :D

The most underrated track ever, is "Judgment of Heaven", yes, it's sung by Bayley, but it's still one of my favourites, the lyrics are so deep, they were written by Harris during a rough part of his life, I beleive he was going through a divorce at the time the "X Factor" was being produced. It really saddens me that such a beautiful track is lost under the mess of low quality tracks during the Blaze era.

Honestly, Blaze sings it with awesome emotion, giving it a dark vibe, much like the rest of the album, but for some reason, this song just sticks out from the others.

Please, just have one last listen to this track and give it one more chance :)
 
  Invaders then would be the most underrated ever, that is  if anyone finds it, "boring"?.  Invaders is anything but boring!  It rocks from beginning to end.  It Gallops, sprints, turns reloads and fires again.  The Bass line Steve hurls at us for the 3+ minutes is relentless and I still can't find the words for it's greatness. The solos are bright and explosive.  And Bruce?  Come on now!  Invaders is one of my favorite Maiden rockers and is probably in my top 40 or so Maiden songs ever.  Powerful In your face Maiden metal at it's best.
 
No more lies only suffers the fate of its repetitive chorus in my opinion.  Great structure and I dig the easy intro.  But the chorus always has me thinking; "Please, no more 'No more Lies' !!"  Cool song though.
 
The whole No Prayer album is full of underrated songs, but then I'm in a minority that loves everything on that album.  :P

Other criminally underrated songs in Maiden's catalogue are Murders In The Rue Morgue, Purgatory, Innocent Exile, Invaders, Still Life, To Tame A Land, Sun And Steel, Flash Of The Blade, The Duellists, Back In The Village, Sea Of Madness, Caught Somewhere In Time, The Loneliness Of The Long Distance Runner, Alexander The Great, Moonchild, Only The Good Die Young, Be Quick Or Be Dead, Childhood's End, Judas Be My Guide, Judgement Of Heaven, The Aftermath, Lightning Strikes Twice, When Two World's Collide, The Nomad, Thin Line Between Love And Hate, The Age Of Innocence, Montsegeur... it's too early to tell if anything from the last two albums is underrated or not, as both albums were hugely praised. :)
 
  Wow sara that is an impressive list of underrated songs.  And as you can see from my top ten list, I agree with you.  Montsegur is the one that I just don't understand. For me this  is a signature Maiden staple.  What an explosion of metal!  I don't get the lack of love.  To tame a land also is one of the finest pieces of music ever, by anyone.  Innocent Exile is a favorite Paul D'ianno song of mine...again..underrated!

Yeah well... Maiden have an awful habit of neglecting a huge chunk of their back catalogue when it comes to making setlists. :( And every single song I listed would be a very worthy addition to their live setlists.

Montsegur is simply a fantastic song! It reminds me a little of Bruce's classic Chemical Wedding album, especially the chorus. How this song failed to become a setlist staple is beyond me...  :lol:

Innocent Exile is one of my all time fave Maiden songs, and one of the first I ever learned to play on guitar. The way the song catches fire near the end is awesome, and Adrian plays one of his finest solos on this song too!

I have to admit, it took me quite a while to appreciate To Tame A Land, but when I finally clicked with the song, I was just blown away by it. It's a wonderful, atmospheric song, and one of Arry's finest but most underappreciated epics. :(

I agree with you Sara on the songs I highlighted in bold, especially The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner. I heard that for some reason Steve himself doesn't like the song, although why I can't understand  :S . Maybe not their best outing in terms of lyrics but in all other respects its a good song. I didn't highlight Caught Somewhere in Time or some of the songs from The  X Factor because I don't think they are underrated, at least not in this community. I'd also add Don't Look to the Eyes of a Stranger and Como Estais Amigos to the list of underappreciated songs. Como Estais Amigos is one of the most atmospheric and downright sad Maiden songs with some powerful singing by Blaze. Don't Look to the Eyes of a Stranger is spooky and I love the chorus (yes its repetitive, but most Maiden songs have a fair share of that, I love it anyway :blush:). 
 
Most of the stuff with Blaze is underrated. Songs like The Educated Fool, Como Estais Amigo, The Edge of Darkness and The Aftermath are sensational songs.

And of course Hallowed Be Thy Name. Most would agree it's Maiden's best. But that's not enough. There are still people who don't think that, and I find that shocking.

Well, I guess the lyrics could be seen as little bit silly, but they're not awful by any means.  :lol: All the songs I listed are underrated, at least by the band themselves, as they never get played live. Don't Look To The Eyes Of A Stranger would be a great song, were it not for the very repetitive mid-section (where the title is repeated over and over), which I think kills a lot of the song's momentum. Como Estais Amigos... yes, that is a beautiful song. :)

@Poto: Hallowed Be Thy Name underrated? Are you feeling okay?  :P

I hafta agree with Sara.  I don't think that by any standard Hallowed can be considered 'underrated'.

Do you mean the best Maiden song or among the best Maiden songs? Because if its the former then I think its very difficult to get millions of fans to agree on one song and if its the latter then I have to tell you that I don't know anybody that undervalues it even if its not their favorite. And certainly the band itself loves that song.
 
The Duellists. A lot of people say it's a filler, but it's one of the highlights of Powerslave, actually. Tremendous rhythm section, powerful Maidesque melodies and great riffs. Is in my Top 20.
Sea of Madness. A confusing yet great main riff, fabulous solos on a nice middle section and one of the best choruses Maiden have ever written. Another Top 20 song in my case.
To Tame a Land. Almost everyone agrees that is a very good song but for me it's one of their best. A candidate for my Top 10.
Die With Your Boots On. I have to admit that it had been my least favorite off Piece of Mind for a long long time. But looking to the past now I say "Why didn't I like this one?" It has one of the best harmonies Maiden have ever written, energetic vocals (especially the mad singing part at the ending) and a good bassline. Top 30 song.
 
I know, it's really weird how "The Duellists" is pushed aside by tracks such as "Flash of the Blade" and "Back in the Village", don't get me wrong, they're all great tracks, I just think "The Duellists" is better than both of those tracks. It deserves a higher ranking.
 
IMO The Duellists is one of the weakest Maiden songs from the 80's. It's very popular on this forum though.

Why don't you like it NP ? Most people I know who don't like The Duellists attack on its "normality". They say the song doesn't surprise them and is nothing special. (Which is wrong, in my opinion) What's your reason ?
 
It's:
1. Nothing special.
2. No matter how many times I listen to it, the next day I don't remember anything but the chorus. I really tried to like it, but in the end I prefer all the other songs from Powerslave, except Losfer Words.

Same goes for, for example, The Prophecy. It sounds cool when I listen to it, but still I don't remember anything from it the next day.
