Most underated songs

The reason why I love "The Duellists" is it's such a melodramatic song. The rhythmic flow of the verses perfectly compliment the lyrics (a parry, a blow...), the chorus is both catchy, but a little bit ominous too, whilst the solo section is full of melody and drama, with H's solo in particular, being just outstanding. Then the "fought to the death..." finale is just a spine tingling moment for me. Awesome song!

Honestly I find Flash of the Blade both more exciting and melodramatic than The Duellists. It's the most "Baroque-sounding" that Maiden ever get but it also has a very 80's feel to it at the same time.

I find less to discover and enjoy in Flash of the Blade than in The Duellists. The things that happen in Flash of the Blade are less in number, and relative seen the pieces repeat themselves more. Besides the less variation aspect, on top of that I find the melodies in The Duellists better. The solos and melodies themselves are indeed way more dramatic, and less sterile. Also in The Duellists I enjoy the difference in rhythm guitars between H and Dave in particular.

Flash of the Blade is also a very good song, another underrated piece. One of the catchiest Maiden riffs, a great, dirty atmosphere and nice vocals. Losfer Words (Big 'Orra) has grown so much on me recently, the bassline is pure magic and riffs are cool. For me the only song on Powerslave that can be considered as a filler is Back in the Village. And even it has interesting parts, especially H's soloing.

"Flash Of The Blade" and "The Duellists" are both amazing songs, so it's hard for me to choose between them. In fact, I can't!

They are both great indeed. Just describing which factors I enjoy more (and in the end I can choose  :D ).

@Re: It seems that a lot of people regard "Back In The Village" as a filler, but I've always loved the song very much. The main riff is awesome (as well as being one of the hardest riffs Ive ever tried to master!), and I love the pace and intensity of the song, and it has a killer harmony/solo section just like every other song on Powerslave. To me, every song on Powerslave is amazing, including "Back In The Village" which I've always viewed as one of Maiden's most underrated songs in their whole catalogue.

Montségur its an overlooked gem. It could easily been on the Powerslave album.
I was extremely disappointed that it was skipped live, in favor of the Virtual XI-ish No More Lies.

I don't mind the Duelists and it does have some nice harmonies, but I don't get why it's so loved either. The "mid section is some of maidens best" comments I've seen etc... why? People always go on about hating repetitivity (all songs are to an extent, but lyrics break them up) - that mid section is for me. I don't see it being anything special, and the verse riff is mostly just one chord over and over.

I far prefer flash of the blade.

The thing about the mid-section of "The Duellists" and why I think it's so effective, is the way it builds up. It starts off in a subdued fashion, which continues with Davey's atmospheric, and uncharacteristcially light solo. The melody which follows that is markedly more dramatic, and it perfectly leads into a magnificent, electrifying solo by H, which just increases the drama stlll further. It's all then capped off by a wonderful melody, and one that seems to fit very well with the lyrical content. It's absolutely classic Maiden harmonies to my ears!

That one always blows me away; Filler on the the Powerslave album!!!????  No fricken way! That album is solid gold. The duelists is so damn maiden it's ridiculous.

As for Losfer Words, it is THE most underrated Maiden song ever.  The rhythms, riffs, the stops and turns and twists.  That piece is a masterpiece, and for me anyway, completely blows any other of the other  instrumentals out of the water.  Mesmerizing. Top 5 all time Maiden.

I used to think there was fillers on Powerslave, but now I love all the songs in it. Time to give Powerslave a listen!

Agree with this. Should've been played live. Cracking song.

I think the band's decision to only play 4 Powerslave songs on the World Slavery Tour (ok, Losfer Words was played occasionally) shows that the band itself underrated the other tracks. By not playing the middle album songs live segregated them from the other four that became classics.

Well, Maiden have had a habit of doing that with all of their albums. Playing the same 3 or 4 songs from their new album at the time on it's ensuing tour, then the other songs which weren't played become eternally neglected and never get played live. Say what you like about Metallica, but I love how theyve constantly mixed up their setlists in recent years, playing some very neglected songs, or even never before played songs. Songs like Trapped Under Ice, Shortest Straw, Holier Than Thou, Dyer's Eve, The Call Of Ktulu, Disposable Heroes, Jump In The Fire... I really wish Maiden would take a leaf out of their book, and start playing some different songs, other than the same 1 or 2 from the same album every tour.

Maiden have such a huge catalogue of great songs, but only a tiny portion of them ever get aired live, and it's the same songs, tour after tour that get played. I was so shocked and pleased when they started playing Moonchild again on the Somewhere Back In Time tour, (aside from the decision to give Janick H's solo in it... wish they wouldn't do that!) but they need to do that more often, and with a wider collection of songs. :(

All other bands band did this better than Maiden. So I completely agree but I think all other bands have more respect for their own whole discography than Maiden.

Maiden don't know their albums. They only know their live played songs. Maybe they do know, but then they are laziest or scariest band of the planet. Lazy to learn, scared for change.
