Moments you thought "Maiden sounding weird here"

Dick Brucinson

The TRUE Dick Brucinson
What examples come to your mind when speaking about Maiden songs going weird?
Classic example for me is the "gone are the days..." part in Total Eclipse.
But I'm sure we can collect more.

Not weird per say, but I've always thought the "We are cast out by our bloody father's hand" section and the use of the whammy during Adrian's solo in Lord of Light were pretty unique for a Maiden track.

I want Maiden to sound weirder as possible, off kilter, as they vastly did, on the first 4 albums and on The X Factor.

I wonder how does sound the instrumental 'Arry showed the band, during Somewhere In Time sessions and they wanted to send him to the funny farm for that.

Not really musically weird, but I remember way back when I was in my teens listening to Maiden England (the Ecatombe bootleg, since I never owned the old CD version that came with the VHS), I kept wondering what the hell that clickety-clacking was through all the songs. Took me longer than I cared to admit to figure out it was Steve's bass strings clacking around, like they had a mic all their own.

I remember one particular moment when No More Lies was released as a single/EP. I used to go round my mate’s house all the time to watch the music channels (we didn’t have Sky). I was really excited that No More Lies had come out and couldn’t wait to see the video on Kerrang. When the time came, he shot me a confused and somewhat angry face when the chorus kicked in. I’ll never forget that look! He said something along the lines of ‘what the fuck is that chorus?!’ It’s not one of their best but I still love the song.

From the same album, the transition from the verse to chorus in Age of Innocence is one of the corniest things they have ever recorded.

The vocal part after the harmony in Age Of Innocence.
The second melody after the intro of The Unbeliever.
The Hammond organ in The Angel And The Gambler.

Yes. I like it a lot and wish it was louder in the mix.
I love that part.
It’s not so much ‘guitar solo’ as ‘cosmic sonic freak out’.
I just wish it was longer.
The solo is 1 minute long, which is pretty good. Dave wanted it to sound like a ''fusion''. I like the idea, but I'm not a big fan of the second guitar making the ''ahh-a-a'' sound, although it's fitting for the overall mood. Btw, Nicko's playing under Dave's solo in Age Of Innocence is somewhat similar.

Yeah, and at the same it fits the style and choices of the album.

It's unique, to say, but not that atypical for its album imo.

No More Lies chorus is the weakest link in the song, but it's still nice. It works, I guess better with guitar under it and the repeat of it in the end of the song is good. Sometimes such choruses are needed for a song, works good and are effective, but Steve definitely could have written a better one. Like adding one more lyric line to it (similar to Rain On The Graves chorus). It sticks out though.

Man I've been trying to find this interview for years, I thought it was on the IMC but I can't find it. I specifically remember an interview with Bruce while they were working on SIT where he says that the new album won't have any epics but there is an instrumental. I always assumed that instrumental was married with another song idea to become Alexander the Great.

Reading the interview, this instrumental isn't Alexander The Great (perhaps, part of it was added), 'cos Bruce says Steve already had a song about a greek warrior and I wonder which Bruce song was going to be on the record.

The instrumental should be an early version of Alexander (merged with another idea/song or not), a song with unique music for the band. Bruce's comments are weird - no epic, all songs around 4-5 minutes, he has 1 song on the album (4 for Steve, 3 for Adrian, 1 for Dave - true). This must be still in pre-production, he mentioned that they don't know what to call the album yet. Wasn't SIT an album with a lot of changes and studio work?

As for Bruce's song, an early version of Run Silent Run Deep?
And wierdly, Benjamin Breeg. I think it sounds so otherworldly and also so simple in the riffing that it sounds like a different band.
Benjamin Breeg with its ''rough riffing'' approach is noticeable in the band's discography. Dave has come up with interesting songs and riffs.
