Megadeth

It’s been a long time since I listened to Rust In Peace, but somehow that album is still as fresh and vibrant as it was when I was just getting into metal. It’s what everyone claims Painkiller is - a pre-existing metal band doubling-down on their talents and releasing a speedy, aggressive, pulsing record that stands up to everything they did before, if not going even beyond that. I’ll also say it right now - this album is right on the level of Master of Puppets. Both are pretty much perfect.

Is it really necessary to constantly compare Megadeth to Metallica? Despite their brief shared history they are two different bands. Let's try to move on from the Metallica vs. Megadeth stuff. It's tedious.
It's just because they are the only thrash band that is better than Megadeth. It has fuck all to do with the rivalry.

I really like Megadeth, their songs always give me joy, although I suppose it's not music that was born out of happiness. :) I've listened to them for a couple of years, but had only heard three albums chosen in random. So when I noticed Diesel's going to start reviewing Megadeth, I though I'll familiarize myself with their albums too! I didn't really like the first one, but agreed with Diesel that the beginning part of the second one is very good. (I've noticed this with Diesel's ratings before: sometimes I feel exactly like he does, sometimes I feel quite the opposite.)

Now I probably should be doing some boring adult stuff, but I think I'll listen to Megadeth's third instead. Housework is overrated anyway. ;)

So Far So Good So What is Megadeth's most overrated album. Production is shite (especially the drums) and Mustaine sounds bad.
Interesting. I've often heard people call it underrated. Probably because it was released between Peace Sells and Rust in Peace.

In My Darkest Hour is top tier Megadeth, the rest of the album is forgettable to bad. Into The Lungs of Hell is cool, Mary Jane and Hook in Mouth are fine, but overall it's not a good record.

The rest of their discography must be fucking stellar if you guys all think SFSGSW is that bad. Seriously, wtf? It's a great album.

Rust in Peace and Countdown To Extinction are near-perfect records. Peace Sells, Youthanasia, Cryptic Writings, and The System Has Failed are all amazing. Everything else in their discography has at most 3-4 songs that are good-to-great and a bunch of filler/shite.

I'd include SFSGSW in the list in category b and switch Peace Sells with CTE, but yeah thems the good albums.

Not bad output 7-8 albums that are of a high standard, most metal bands get nowhere near that.

No, I would rather discuss Megadeth in the Megadeth thread. But then I suppose you don't know much Thrash anyway. The Metallica comparisons are lazy, cliched and overused. They shou;d not be the first port of call when discussing Megadeth.
Triggered much? Ok then, I'll try to not bring up other bands here. There should be enough to discuss about Megadeth anyway.

Ok I’m going to jump into this one because I’ve always wanted to explore the Megadeth discography, mostly for the great guitarists who have gone through the band.

Debut was better than I expected but I still can’t see myself going back to it any time soon. It’s fun though, in the way a lot of early thrash is fun. Some good guitar playing although a lot of the transitions between parts are really rocky. It was clearly recorded in a rush, but the energy in the performances offsets a lot of the sloppiness. There’s also some pretty good hooks throughout. I really enjoyed the title track and Looking Down the Cross in particular. Mechanix probably served as reassurance to James and Lars that firing Dave was the right choice.

Peace Sells is a huge improvement. I agree with the sentiment that side B is a bit weaker but overall it’s a very solid album. Thrash classic.

It was recorded in about two months which was not unusual for thrash/metal albums in those days, but the biggest difference was that they had to produce the album themselves since they blew most of the budget from their record company on drugs and alcohol which meant that they couldn't afford to pay a producer.

Possibly. But if you try to put on 1985 thrash glasses..Megadeth did more to appeal to the thrash crazy youth with that rendition of the song than what Metallica had done with it. I mean, in the eyes of people looking to thrash, there's no doubt that Mechanix is faster, more mean and more in your face than the Metallica version. Which was the point of Megadeth's version all along :D
