Phantom of the Opera vs. Run to the Hills

One of the best of Iron Maiden versus the most overrated song of Iron Maiden. And the most overplayed of course. (maybe with The Trooper) Run to the Hills is not even a Top 60 song in my book (I'm not saying it's a bad song though, it's really good) and Phantom of the Opera is in my Top 10. My vote is obvious.

The Prisoner vs. Fear of the Dark

Fear of the Dark is maybe the most popular song of Maiden even non-metal people knows it. I mean they listen to Maiden songs they don't know what exactly (especially The Trooper that is) but they know the name of Fear of the Dark. The song is a little simple but has fantastic melodies. By the way, the album version feels incomplete. However the live version is simply perfect. On the other side, The Prisoner is also great. It has a great theme is like a drama. Bruce's performance is fantastic on that song. But I'll go with Fear of the Dark.

The Edge of Darkness vs. Rainmaker

The Edge of Darkness is one of my least favorites from The X Factor (notice that TXF is in my Top 6 Maiden albums) but Rainmaker is special for me. It's one of the first songs I heard from Maiden, and is still gives me goosebumps everytime I listen to it. Not an amazing song but really great. Rainmaker is better.

The Clansman vs. These Colours Don't Run

Hardest one here. These Colours Don't Run is my second favorite from AMOLAD, The Clansman is my favorite from VXI. Both are in my Top 25. I especially like the part starts at about 3:10 on These Colours Don't Run is just simply amazing and is one of my all time favorite Maiden moments. But The Clansman is a better and "complete" song overall.

Dream of Mirrors vs. Strange World

Close call but Strange World for just Dennis Stratton's solo at the beginning.

Killers vs. Charlotte the Harlot

One of the easiest here, Killers.

Where Eagles Dare vs. Alexander the Great

The results are close, but not close for me. Alexander the Great that is.

Paschendale vs. Man on the Edge

Easiest along with Killers. Paschendale.

Re: Maidenfans March Madness - Murray Division (Round 1)

The Murray Division is loaded with heavyweights, with three legitimate contenders (the Entrenchers, the Eriks, and the Highlanders) battling with several good underdogs. Now let's get down to the action.

The Eriks from Phantom of the Opera Music College are shutting out the Run to the Hills State Cavalrymen 19-0. POTOMC are a favourite to win the division and this should be no surprise. The Cavalrymen haven't been good since 1982.

The Prisoners Tech No 6s are losing in a closely ranked battle to the Fear of the Dark State Creepers, 14-5. Some pundits have suggested that the Creepers might go far, but they play pretty much every night and I can't see them surviving the Eriks in the next round.

The Edge of Darkness Technical College is losing in a surprise upset to the Rainmaker Native American University Downpours. The Downpours are known for making deep stabs into the brackets and this year might be the same. They're beating the Dead Geniuses 14-5.

The Clansman University Highlanders are putting their claymores into the These Colours Don't Run Paratroopers 12-7. While not unexpected, some wonder if the Highlanders have the legs to go deep. I think they were hoping on the Downpours drying up against the Geniuses.

Dream of Mirrors Tech is beating Strange World State University 12-7. The Truthers got a particularly high seed this time, and the Weirds don't have the legs to hold up against them.

Killers A&M is murdering Charlotte the Harlot School for Women 18-1. The Knives are getting no resistance from the Prostitutes, and it shows. This next matchup could be a doozy.

Alexander the Great Greek College Sarissas are upsetting the Where Eagles Dare State Fortresses 11-8. The Fortresses can come back, but everyone knows that when the Sarissas get rolling, it's almost impossible to reign them in.

Finally, Paschendale Military Institute is trouncing the Man on the Edge University Maniacs 18-1. The PMI Entrenchers are one of the toughest schools in the division, and look to be setting themselves up to fight AGGC in the next round.

Should be an interesting division as it develops, Tom!

Re: Maidenfans March Madness - Murray Division (Round 1)

The Prisoner (easy, yes I really don't like Fear of the Dark much)
Rainmaker (quite close)
The Clansman (quite close)
Dream of Mirrors
Killers (easy)
Where Eagles Dare (hardest of the division)
Paschendale (easy)

Re: Maidenfans March Madness - Murray Division (Round 1)

Phantom of the Opera: You'd better run to the hills if you are dissing POTO, because then I'll be coming after ya all guns blazing. The first truly great Maiden song. Top notch composition and musicianship!

Fear of the Dark: If we consider the studio tracks only, I'd call this a draw. However, the live status the 1992 effort has, gives it the edge.

Rainmaker: The first Maiden video I saw was for Rainmaker, I thought the song rocked and I still think so. DoD should have started with this instead of Wildest Dreams.

The Clansman: FREEDOM! This VXI effort has to be my favourite song of the 90s.

Dream of Mirrors: Again some lyrics that makes you think 'Arry must have some bad sleep issues ... the highlight of the song is that galloping part in the second half.

Killers: The aggressive side of Maiden at its best.

Alexander the Great: Musically this song really takes you out marching with Alexander's army, too bad the lyrics don't really do the same. Musically fantastic and edges out Where Eagles Dare, but not by much.

Paschendale: Yes.

Indeed. It should have been in the 2010 set in WD's place as well.
