Maiden Mix CD

So here's the deal. I'm in a band and trying to turn my guitarist on to more Iron Maiden, but not in any-old listening kind of way. More of a songwriting way. Basically, he has all sorts of musical theory training and such, and I'm just a guy who bangs on the drums and makes vague attempts to write metal music.

Basically, I want to take a CD, hand it to him and go, 'Here, these are some of Maiden's best-written songs'. But I'm trying to avoid the inevitable temptation to play favorites, and trying to spread things out over the first thirteen studio albums (I already lent him A Matter Of Life And Death, so he doesn't need to hear that), while focussing more on the song-writing aspects. And I'm trying to keep a decent balance of short, medium, and long length songs. And also trying to go for diversity, so not just all up-tempo Aces High/Trooper/Number Of The Beast rockers...

But I'm having trouble, naturally. I only have about seventy-eight minutes to work with, and I don't just want to drop a Greatest Hits collection into his lap. I'm finding myself with only twelve tracks or so, and I'm not really certain about the ones I have.

I guess what I'm asking for is help deciding how to allocate seventy-eight minutes worth of Maiden, while highlighting the writing (and progressions and time changes and tempos and lyrics and whatever). Let me show you what I have so far...

Alexander The Great - The first song that jmped to mind, because of its insane lyrics, the multiple tones and seamless shifts, historicality, and overall whatnot. Don't really want to cut this one, but it's eight and a half friggin' minutes.

Prodigal Son - Pretty much self explanatory. The start-stop shifts are what I like to highlight, as well as the 'earlier' side of Maiden.

Purgatory - This one I want to use as an example of Maiden's ability to write straight-forward rockers, but I am wondering if this slot might be better served by, say, Sun and Steel or Can I Play With Madness...

Paaschendale - The dynamics of this song are awesome and something I really want to show off to him. Also, the historic lyrics and bombastic, artillery-style blows are nice, it's an epic I really want to keep.

Journeyman - A beautiful acoustic song. This one is a lock.

Dream Of Mirrors - I wanted something from Brave New World but I was not sure what to select, I thought of this one for its shifts from regular to double time, as well as its multiple vocal movements, but it's well over nine minutes...

The Trooper - The galloping pace, start-stop first verse, the harmonics and leads are to die for. Also noteworthy because it really has no chorus, so I want to include this one.

Powerslave - Not sure about putting on Powerslave, but I like the Egyptian sound and think the main riff is spiffy. The shift to double-time is nice too, but I'm not sure if I should keep this one or Dream Of Mirrors.

Futureal - Again, another quick straight-forward rocker, headbanger type song.

Hallowed Be Thy Name - Another lock.

Mother Russia - I don't really know if I want to keep this song. I don't like it much, but I think the multiple riffing patterns and the overall flavor and 'darker' tone of it might be inspiring.

The Clairvoyant - I wanted a bass-driven song, and the intro certainly counts, but I'm also not too sure about it. I could also use Tailgunner, but I like the shift in time signature in this song's chorus.

The Edge Of Darkness - Originally I was going to have Fortunes Of War because of its quiet-loud-quiet overall structure, and it begins and ends with softer, almost spoken lyrics. But Edge Of Darkness has an interesting riffing pattern, as well as the tempo shifts, especially the one near the end at the line 'I understand why the genius must die'.

Total time : 80:25, even with cutting the intros down and eliminating pauses between tracks, so that is obviously not going to work.

Other thoughts: Clairvoyant vs. Tailgunner, Edge Of Darkness vs. Fortunes Of War, Purgatory vs. Be Quick Or Be Dead, and should I fit either Fear Of The Dark or Afraid To Shoot Strangers in here? Should I work 'Number Of The Beast' in for its strange time signature? Or The Unbeliever?

It depends on how good the guy is in playing and songwriting. If he isn't, then I wouldn't give him the most complicated songs. He might hide that he can't do such stuff, by saying that he doesn't like it.

If you have faith in him then I'd say, at the moment this list is a good and varied list (although I think The Edge of Darkness has a lot in common with Hallowed Be Thy Name, so you could leave out one of these two tracks).

A lot will depend on his taste, and open mindness - whatever you will try.

Good luck with the music !

I wouldn't give him Alexander the Great. Sure the music is great, but what god-awful lyrics! honestly it sounds like Bruce is just reading of a grocery list or something.

I like the list but:
a) I don't think you need both Prodigal Son and Journeyman since both have light parts
b) I don't think you need both Purgatory and Futureal since they're both straightforward rockers.  I would put in Can I Play with Madness as you suggested because it does have a more, hmmm... I don't want to say 'poppy' feel but you know what I mean.
c) I would suggest you include any of the following for a more 'eastern feel': To Tame a Land, The Nomad or Out of the Shadows.
d) Instead of The Edge of Darkness, maybe 2 A.M. would work.  It is soulful, slow, moody and represents the X Factor as well as most songs.

I gave it another look over, axing Alexander The Great as redundant (grocery list! ), Prodigal Son, replaced Purgatory with Can I Play With Madness, Dream Of Mirrors, and replaced Edge Of Darkness with 2AM. I added The Nomad (is it just me or do the 'ahhhs' remind me of Spinal Tap?), but I still wound up with only about 66 minutes. Hallowed Be Thy Name, The Trooper, Powerslave, Can I Play With Madness, The Clairvoyant, Mother Russia, Fear Of The Dark, 2 AM, Futureal, The Nomad, Paaschendaele, Journeyman

On the plus side, this allowed me to add Fear Of The Dark. On the minus side, I'm at about seventy-two-and-a-quarter, with a touch under eight minutes free, and no idea what to put in there.

My first thought was 'Phantom Of The Opera', but I don't think it's really that well written. It's jerky and kind of awkward and goes on for a while and I'm not really sure if that's what I want to put in there.

I can either stick in one 6+ minute song, or try and wedge two in that space (which is going to be difficult since I already have both Futureal and Can I Play With Madness) . Potential candidates are Afraid To Shoot Strangers, Tailgunner, Flash Of The Blade, Genghis Khan and either Wrathchild or Transylvania or...

...well, basically, what do you think is missing?

Running Free [live].  Live After Death version.  Seriously, you can't go wrong with that. :p

Maybe Chains Of Misery... ;)

you don't have to top it off, it's nice, but I don't think it is much of a necessity with cds as it was/is with mix tapes. Which, by the way is another thing you could do. Buy a 120 minute blank tape and you can add longer songs having a full hour on each side. I remember doing a maiden one 4 years ago or so and it had like 14 or 12 songs on each side.... that's a lot of maiden.

I don't have a tapedeck, let alone any tapes. Yes, yes, I know, but the last time it broke, I never got around to replacing it... hey, maybe I should.

How could you leave out The Apparition? :innocent:

You're just trying to fool me! I... I think...

Conor, fool people? Never! I won't hear anything to the contrary. :D

I find that 120 minute tapes do NOT last.  I bought two once and neither lasted longer than two months.

Polaris, if you're going for songwriting only then Holy Smoke would work nicely and Fear is the Key has incredible lyrics.  If you can afford a song over 6 minutes, you should not look over Revelations in my opinion.

You are buying the wrong brand cause I have some from 8 years ago...

It could very well be true.  My tape-in-car listening days may be over soon.  Within a year I'll get another car which will have a CD player.  Finally...

Best song not mentioned so far in this thread: Still Life.

Couldn't agree more. It did come to mind, but I got distracted looking up NHL scores, glad someone brought it up.

Chains of Misery sounds good to me, although I would also suggest The Evil that Men Do and Infinite Dreams.

I think people here are missing what Polaris had originally asked, [EDIT:or I missed what he said].  He is concentrating on lyrics.  The last song needs to be under 6 mins.  Both Holy Smoke and Fear is the Key are different in their writing.  I think he wanted a variety.  ;)

EDIT: Anyway, since most threads shift in focus, why not this one.  Here is my list of best written Maiden songs from old to new.  I am ignoring all else -- I'm only focusing on the lyrics.

Hallowed By Thy Name *
Revelations *
The Trooper *
Still Life
2 Minutes to Midnight
Infinite Dreams *
The Evil That Men Do
Seventh Son of a Seventh Son
The Clairvoyant
Only the Good Die Young
Holy Smoke
No Prayer for the Dying
Fear is the Key
Wasting Love
The Apparition
Fear of the Dark

... well I'm running out of time.  So I'll have to stop here.  This may get erased.  I don't care.

*These songs are the best of the best lyrically, in my humble opinion.

Has there been a thread such as this?

EDIT YET AGAIN: I just realize I misread Polaris' original post.  :(  He wanted to focus on more than just lyrics.  I realize I'm rambling.  I'm having a bad day OR I'm having real trouble multi-tasking today.
