Absolutely. They once interned a pretty important US general, I was reading the other day, because his B-17 came down unexpectedly on Irish soil. Oops! Womp womp.

Speaking as someone who was from one of the lesser powers, I can definitely agree that the politics are interesting, even if Canada was tied to the UK culturally, the independence shown in doing things like...declaring war a week later than the UK, or the way Canada originally chose to participate in a limited fashion. That changed, of course, especially after the Battle of France, but it's still pretty neat.

I wonder how the Brazilians or Mexicans ponder it.
 
I stuck mostly with Europe, but Latin America/Mexico would be interesting as well. A lot of Realpolitik-ing going on I would imagine.
 
Every country in North America eventually declared war on the Axis, but not many of them participated. Brazil sent an expeditionary force, and Mexico sent some fighters to fly in the Philippines.
 
Maybe we could move this to the WWII thread, in addition to the force Mexico sent, about 300K Mexicans came to the US to work in various factories. I think it interesting seeing how some countries maintained neutrality, though most all showed a preference towards one side or the other. But stuck with the formalities, like condolences over Hitler's death.

That was some time ago, I remember that from several years back. But a) she was (maybe still is) hot and b) I think it is kinda wrong to hold her Grandfather against her. See articles like that often with Albert Speer Jt, not his fault what his Dad was involved in.

Albert Speer Jr is a highly acclaimed architect and one of the foremost post-WW2 urban planners in the world. One of the most popular German crime authors these days is Ferdinand von Schirach. And let's not forget Manfred von Richthofen (died last year), president of the German Olympic federation.

Really, what are these people supposed to do, not be successful in their lives because of what their parents or grandparents did? If you followed that in all consequence, nobody in Germany, Italy or Japan could do anything.

I agree with that fully ... From the interviews I have seen with Speer Jr and what I have read about him, he has an outstanding record of achievement. But, there have been at least one story I read where he was pretty much banned from contracting work because of his Dad's name.

I completely agree with you, as you know. Manfred Rommel was a mayor for a long time, and close friends with the 2nd Viscount of Alamein.

I read one of his books, and I think it was fascinating. He's a great storyteller, and what sets his books apart is that he displays real empathy with the people he talks about.

I picked that one as it dealt with the Hitler Youth, should be interesting to see how he handles that

Of course, the message the gif conveys is that the tall guy is a jerk for seeing the woman's problem and not helping her out. But nothing in the sequence indicates that she asked him for help - instead she simply expected him to hand the crate down to hear, without so much as a 'please'. If you ask me, both people in this are jerks.
 
RIP Mr Cub, Ernie banks

The guy lived the American dream, black kid , one of 12 kids from Dallas, TX getting a Presidential medal, a statue outside Wrigley Field, and really loved by the entire city (even most Sox fans). He did not really make all that much money from baseball (God knows what his salary would be now with that talent) and did really well in retirement and helped a lot of people.



An American Great, beyond anything he did on the field
