I do tech support; so I am rather a dedicated help desk fellow.  Though I'm not rated in anything, I've been building all my networking and OS related skills.  I'm learning UNIX currently.

UNIX is cool. I got jaded on it for a while because I took a class for it in college (Red Hat Linux) and the instructor taught the class like everyone in there knew exactly what the hell she was talking all the time. Most of us at the time, had 0 experience. That pretty much sucked.

Let me put it this way: the company I work for uses an OS that is based on UNIX code.  So while my job doesn't require me to learn UNIX, I'm doing it anyway...because the literature is there and I can learn it.

I do a support role as well and the amount of calls I take that has me ending up simply saying - "reboot the PC". :D

If only all of life's problems can be solved by a reboot.

This new project had to happen for our company. As I said, we have 1300 stores and they are still using IT equipment that is 10-12 years old - running DOS 6.2.

Oh yeah, step 1 in any network admin's toolbox.  :D

:o

Trouble is, some have got wise to it.

"Oh that old chestnut.", they say.

But one user has suggested we adopt some new terminology - "recycle the power" is one I nicked from HP.

There's a great Dogbert Tech Support cartoon out there.

Caller: "Hey, something's wrong-"
Dogbert: "Shut up.  Reboot."
Caller: "Hey, that work-"
Dogbert: Shut up.  Hang up the phone."

It absolutely is true.  I can't tell you how many time I've wanted to say, "What do you mean you can't find it?  It's alphabetical order!?"

Sorry LC, I haven't even checked. I don't want to get in on it at this point as I am getting ready to depart soon and probably won't be back on for over a week. It's fun time again....  :)
