I dreamed today that Albie left the forum. I am such a geek, now I'm DREAMING about Maidenfans.  :D

Bloody 'ell. Yesterday was supposed to be the party of the year. I went all the way to Chemnitz to have a brilliant start but ended up puking out all my gastric acid because I ate something bad. Damn Communist Eassies.

What was the occasion Perun?

On topic (kind of): I dreamt my wife was pregnant again last night. (If you know me, then you know that this was truly a nightmare).

What a bunch of dreamers!

@Deano, that is a nightmare!

@Perun, what a drag of a way to celebrate.

@Yax, I wouldn't call you a geek, but...dreaming bout maidenfans?

@Mmm...Donuts, I hate it when I'm left blue.

:D

Nope, no secret here. I'm now a Gunnery Sergeant (which is an E-7). Pretty high up there. Thank you for your congratulations, I kind of wish it was like the old days when you got promoted, everybody you know of higher rank could essentially beat the shit out of you. Now that's considered hazing and is a no-no. Oh well.

Thoughts on Richmond this Saturday?

Congrats on making Gunny!  Remind me never to fuck with you.

(I once read a news story on how an 84 year old retired gunny who had served in Guadacanal beat the hell out of some kid who broke into his house.  Never mess with the Marines.)

Thanks LC! It definitely is cool. You can fuck with me all you want, friends are allowed to.

I read that story too, it made me feel warm and fuzzy all over. You definitely don't want to fuck with WWII vets, no matter how old they are.

Now, if I remember correctly, Gunnery Sergeant is the highest enlisted rank in the Marines without being the Command Sergeant?

My old man just made Chief Petty Officer 1st Class in the Canadian Forces, so I know what kind of an achievement it can be...

No, it is a high rank but not the highest enlisted rank. The enlisted rank structure in the Marines progresses like this-

E-1 - Private
E-2 - Private First Class
E-3 - Lance Corporal
E-4 - Corporal
E-5 - Sergeant
E-6 - Staff Sergeant
E-7 - Gunnery Sergeant
E-8 - Master Sergeant or First Sergeant
E-9 - Master Gunnery Sergeant or Sergeant Major

(For the E-8 and E-9 ranks you can progress into the ranks I listed first if you remain doing your primary military occupational specialty, you would progress into the ranks listed second if you choose to handle more of the administrative work for the Company or Battalion, essentially working side by side with the Commanding Officer. Once you choose a path at E-8, that's the path you stay on, I.E.: a Master Sergeant would progress to a Master Gunnery Sergeant, not a Sergeant Major and vice versa.)

Congratulations to your father as well! So, now educate me please; would a Chief Petty Officer 1st Class be an E-8 in the Canadian Navy?

Yes.  CPO1 is an E-8 rank, equivalent to Chief Warrant Officer in the Army or Navy.  I don't think the CF has E-9 grade, but I could be wrong.

It looks a little like this:

E1:  Ordinary Seaman
E2:  Able Seaman
E3:  Leading Seaman
E4:  Master Seaman
E5:  Petty Officer, 2nd Class
E6:  Petty Officer, 1st Class
E7:  Chief Petty Officer, 2nd Class
E8:  Chief Petty Officer, 1st Class

CPO1s can hold a bevy of different positions: coxswain of one of our combat ships, Regimental Sergeant-Major for non-combat units, Base Command Chief, Fleet Command Chief, or Command Chief Warrant Officer of the Canadian Forces.  Dad is going to be working on NATO related stuff in Ottawa, at least to start with.

Wow, I didn't realize that our rank stuctures were all that different.

Chief Warrant Officers in any of our branches of service are their own rank stucture: W-1 through W-5, you then have the officer rank structure of O-1 through O-10. W-1 through W-5 are the equivilent of O-1 through O-5 respectively.

The U.S. Navy enlisted rank structure:

E-1 - Seaman Recruit
E-2 - Seaman Apprentice
E-3 - Seaman
E-4 - Petty Officer Third Class
E-5 - Petty Officer Second Class
E-6 - Petty Officer First Class
E-7 - Chief Petty Officer
E-8 - Senior Chief Petty Officer
E-9 - Master Chief Petty Officer

I guess it's really not that different. That's really great your dad will be working with NATO, my experience with them has been good up to this point.
