GO STEELERS! 3-0, off to a killer start!  :D

Sadly, Maidenfans is based out of England, so on this site it is correct to say "football" when you really mean "soccer".
PG, you and I will have to address real football as "American football".

It's nice to see the Steelers off to a fine start.
It's much better to see my beloved Green Bay Packers off to an even more impressive 3-0 start.
More impressive because the Pack was not believed to be as good of a team, and every one of their opponents so far was a playoff team last year.

As with all Anglo-Saxon-derived Middle English 'Kennings', the word football is a combination of two other words which, when combined, describe the object's purpose or function pretty well.

Uhhh....HAND-ELLIPSOID, anyone?

One only needs to make a quick wiki search of "Football" to see that "Football" encompasses, Association Football (soccer), American Football and Rugby to name a few. The theory as to why so many sports are known as football states that they were the games played by peasants ON FOOT, in contrast to those played by the nobility ON HORSES. Only speculation of course. But all sports do have a common origin and slowly evolved into their present forms. I know this is the madness forum, and I know I said I wouldn't post on this thread again given the GRAVE INJUSTICE done to the precious LAST WORD... BUT a bit of sanity here and there is not too bad. Plus I found the article FACINATING... Really, good stuff.

I forget the exact details and timeline, but:
Rugby evolved from football.
Later, American football evolved from rugby.

That's another part of the reason they're all called football by different people: they all evolved from football.

Now playing: The Black Crowes, "A Conspiracy".

I just read that Murray interview at ultimate-guitar.com and the guy asked Dave one question about the tour!  Everything else was about how they go about making albums and how the 3 guitarists do their thing in the studio.

Damn!

Oh well, now that the Aussie presale is done, they'll announce more tourdates soon  :D

1823. :smartarse:

At least that is the year when Web Ellis picked up the football and ran with it.
